Pettersen, Collier & Weber Win Borleske Trophies
Three of Whitman's top student athletes -- soccer player Max Weber and swimmers
Erin Pettersen and
Clint Collier -- are the latest recipients of the coveted
Borleske trophies.
Collier and Weber are co-winners of the R.V. Borleske Trophy, given annually to senior male athletes
in recognition of athletic achievement, sportsmanship and leadership. Pettersen takes home the
2008 Mignon Borleske Trophy, which is given to senior female
athletes in recognition of the same qualities.
The Borleske trophy winners were announced at Monday's annual Athletics Awards Banquet in the Reid
Campus Center ballroom.
The trophies are named in honor of Raymond Vincent Borleske, an athlete and coach whose many accomplishments
during the first half of the 20th century are legendary, and his wife, Mignon Borleske, who taught dance and
women's physical education classes at Whitman for nearly four decades.
Lisa Taylor Heads List of "Top Five GPA" Athletes
Lisa Taylor, a senior cross country runner, was recognized at Monday's Athletics Awards Banquet for having
the highest cumulative grade point average among all of Whitman's varsity athletes.
Both Taylor and senior baseball player Adam Knappe, the runner-up on the top five list, have grade point
averages above 3.9.
Rounding out the top five, in order, are three juniors -- tennis player Christoph Fuchs and soccer
players Kristen Mittelsteadt and Simon Quay.
A total of 43 Whitman seniors, juniors and sophomores were recognized as Northwest Conference Scholar
Athletes, an honor given to students who maintain cumulative grade point averages of 3.5 or above. An
additional 30 first-year athletes at Whitman also top the 3.5 minimum, but first-year students are not
eligible for the conference award.
In all, about 33 percent of all varsity athletes have cumulative grade point averages at or above 3.5.
Outstanding Performer Awards Given
Senior soccer players Kristen Berndt and Andy Huntington top a list of nine student athletes
who received "Most Outstanding Performer" awards at Monday night's Athletics Awards Banquet.
The awards are given annually to one male and one female athlete in each class. That being said, there was
a tie in voting for the male junior class award between Chris Faidley (basketball) and Stephen
Phillips (soccer). Tennis player Katie Oost is the female winner for the junior class.
Winners for the sophomore class are Devon Spika (Nordic skiing) and Matt Solomon (tennis).
Jenele Peterson (basketball) and Chris Bailey (tennis) took home the freshman class awards.

Fan, Coach & Sportsmanship Awards Given
Associate professors of mathematics Laura Schueller and Albert Schueller have been named
Whitman's "Fans of the Year" by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
Laura Schueller also serves as the faculty athletics representative at Whitman. She and husband Albert are
among the most loyal fans on campus, regarless of sport.
Other awards given at Monday's Athletics Awards Banquet recognized Skip Molitor as Coach of the Year
and the men's soccer team as recipient of the George Ball Sportsmanship Award. After 14 seasons as the Whitman
men's basketball coach, Molitor is leaving the coaching ranks this summer to serve as an assistant athletic
director. The men's soccer team was recognized for having supported numerous athletic events ranging from
a surplus uniform sale to concession sales at Sherwood Center.
