WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- A total of 57 students recently received Scholar Athlete honors at Whitman College for the 1999-2000 academic year. The honor was given to athletes who lettered in at least one varsity sport during the academic year, had a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher (through the fall semester), and received a favorable recommendation from the coaching staff.
Three Whitman seniors were named Scholar Athletes this year for the fourth time in their four seasons at the college. They are swimmer Katie Berger, soccer player Rob Tonnsen and student athletic trainer Shannon Lipscomb.
Lee Coleman, a retired swim coach and professor of physical education, began the Whitman Scholar Athlete program in the spring of 1985 (click here for a year-by-year listing of past Whitman Scholar Athletes).
"It is very appropriate to honor those athletes who are exceptional students," Coleman said. "This is what college athletics should be all about."
