Women Scholar Athletes

Cindy Allen, freshman, 1995 graduate of Coeur d'Alene High School, Coeur d'Alene, ID; daughter of Robert & Susan Allen, Hayden Lake, ID. Allen lettered in swimming. She holds the Whitman school record in the 200-yard backstroke. The Whitman women's swim team has placed 10th at the NAIA national championships in each of the past two years.

Jennie Close, senior chemistry/biology major; 1992 graduate of DeSales High School, Walla Walla, WA; daughter of Jerald & Thora Close, Walla Walla, WA. Close lettered in track & field. She was one of 28 Whitman seniors who were elected this spring to the national honor society Phi Beta Kappa, which is one of the highest academic honors an undergraduate may receive.

Carmen Coombs, sophomore chemistry/biology major; 1994 graduate of Bear River High School, Garland, UT; daughter of Steven & Connie Coombs, Fielding, UT. Coombs was recognized for her work as a student athletic trainer.

Jenny Fischer, senior psychology major; 1992 graduate of Mountain View High School, Bend, OR; daughter of Sheena Fischer, Bend, OR, and Lee Fischer, also of Bend. Fischer, who lettered in cross country skiing, earned scholar-athlete honors for the third consecutive year. The Whitman men's and women's alpine and cross country teams have combined for U.S. Collegiate Ski Association national titles in each of the past two seasons.

Castle Funatake, junior biology major; 1993 graduate of La Salle High School, Milwaukie, OR; daughter of Cynthia Kim, Portland, OR, and Paul Funatake, also of Portland. Funatake, who lettered in swimming, was one of only 10 women recognized by the NAIA as 1995-96 All-America Scholar-Athletes in swimming and diving. The Whitman women's swim team has placed 10th in each of the past two seasons at the NAIA national championships.

Staci Hemmer, freshman, 1995 graduate of Columbia Falls High School, Columbia Falls, MT; daughter of Carmen Hemmer, Columbia Falls, MT. Hemmer lettered in tennis. She was one of four first-year athletes who played key roles on the women's tennis team, which finished the season with a 9-7 won-loss record.

Abby Hulme, sophomore sociology major; 1994 graduate of Hellgate High School, Missoula, MT; daughter of Richard & Janet Hulme, Missoula, MT. Hulme lettered in swimming and earned scholar-athlete honors for the second consecutive year. She holds the Whitman school record in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke. She also shares one of the school relay records.

Natsuko Kagawa, senior mathematics/physics major; 1993 graduate of Lincoln School, Washington, DC; daughter of Tsutomu & Reiko Kagawa, Sendai Miyagi, Japan. Kagawa lettered in tennis. The Whitman women's team finished the season with a 9-7 season won-loss record.

Lucie McCoy, senior economics major; 1992 graduate of Sherman County High School, Moro, OR; daughter of Thomas & Nancy McCoy, Wasco, OR. McCoy lettered in tennis. The Whitman women's team finished the season with a 9-7 won-loss record.

Dorothy Metcalf, junior geology major; 1993 graduate of Fort Collins High School, Ft Collins, CO; daughter of Keith & Joyce Metcalf, Fort Collins, CO. Metcalf lettered in both cross country and track & field, and she earned scholar-athlete honors for the third time in three years. She won the conference title in the 10,000 meters during this spring's track season, and was a member of the women's cross country team that placed sixth last fall at the NAIA national championships. She also was honored last fall by the NAIA as an All-America Scholar-Athlete.

Thuy Ha Nguyen, junior biology major; 1993 graduate of Benson Polytech High School, Portland, OR; daughter of Viet Nguyen & Kim Ha, Portland, OR. Nguyen, who lettered in tennis, earned scholar-athlete honors for the third time. She was a member of the Whitman women's tennis team, which finished the season with a 9-7 won-loss record. Nguyen was one of only two Whitman juniors who were elected this spring to the national honor society Phi Beta Kappa, which is one of the highest academic honors an undergraduate may receive.

Joan Ogle, sophomore English major; 1994 graduate of Blanchet High School, Seattle, WA; daughter of Beverly Ogle, Seattle, WA. Ogle, who lettered in swimming, earned scholar-athlete honors for the second time in two years. She shares a Whitman school record in one of the relay events. The Whitman women's team has placed 10th at the NAIA national championships in each of the past two years.

Oni Ogsbury, senior English major; 1991 graduate of Boulder High School, Boulder, CO; daughter of Ellen Stark, Boulder, CO, and Charles Ogsbury, also of Boulder. Ogsbury, who lettered in cross country, earned scholar-athlete honors for the third time. She was a member of the women's cross country team, which placed sixth at the NAIA national championships last fall. She was one of 28 Whitman seniors who were elected this spring to the national honor society Phi Beta Kappa, which is one of the highest academic honors an undergraduate may receive.

Joelle Rickard, senior foreign languages & literatures (Spanish) major; 1993 graduate of Forest Grove High School, Forest Grove, OR; daughter of Louise Rickard, Forest Grove, OR. Rickard, who lettered in soccer, earned scholar-athlete honors for the third time. She is a starter on defense for the women's soccer team.

Julie Stafford, senior psychology major; 1992 graduate of East Anchorage High School, Anchorage, AK; daughter of Robert & Rita Stafford, Anchorage, AK. Stafford, who lettered in cross country skiing, earned scholar-athlete honors for the fourth time in four years. The Whitman men's and women's alpine and cross country ski teams won the U.S. Collegiate Ski Association all-around titles in each of the past two seasons. Stafford, a four-time Academic All-American, captured All-America honors in several events during her four years at Whitman, and she and two teammates nearly won a national title in 1995 when they placed second in a relay event. A year ago, Stafford was one of only two juniors at Whitman who were elected to the national honor society Phi Beta Kappa, one of the highest academic honors an undergraduate may receive.

Anna Stewart, freshman, 1995 graduate of Newport High School, Bellevue, WA; daughter of Doug & Kathy Stewart, Bellevue, WA. Stewart lettered in women's soccer.

Karen Valaas, junior economics major; 1993 graduate of Bellevue High School, Bellevue, WA; daughter of John & Joan Speir Valaas, Medina, WA. Valaas, who lettered in women's soccer, earned scholar-athlete honors for the second time.

Erika Welch, senior biology major; 1993 graduate of Hudson's Bay High School, Vancouver, WA; daughter of Jackson Welch & Mariha Kuechmann, Vancouver, WA. Welch, who lettered in swimming, earned scholar-athlete honors for the third time in three years. The Whitman women's swim team placed 10th in each of the past two years at the NAIA national championships.

Wendy Wilford, sophomore chemistry major; 1994 graduate of Robert Service High School, Anchorage, AK; daughter of Thomas & Mary Wilford, Boise, ID. Wilford, who lettered in track & field, earned scholar-athlete honors for the second time in two years. She broke the Whitman school record this spring in the triple jump.

Molly Willis, junior biology major; 1993 graduate of Crescent Valley High School, Corvallis, OR; daughter of R. Tim & Sandra Willis, Corvallis, OR. Willis, who lettered in soccer, earned scholar-athlete honors for the second time. A three-year starter on defense last fall on the women's soccer team, Willis earned all-conference honors and was named to the All-West Region second team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. She also received All-America Scholar-Athlete honors from the NAIA.

Men Scholar Athletes

Brady Bennon, sophomore politics/environmental studies major; 1994 graduate of Sabino High School, Tucson, AZ; son of Jeff & Ann Bennon, Tucson, AZ. Bennon lettered in men's soccer.

Francisco Blanch, senior economics major; son of Jose Blanch & Maria Mercedes Borau, Huesca, Spain. Blanch, who lettered in men's soccer, earned scholar-athlete honors for the third time in three seasons. He is a three-year starter at goalie who has earned NAIA All-American honors in all three of his seasons at Whitman.

Josh Carney, junior biology major; 1992 graduate of Pocatello High School, Pocatello, ID; son of Kathleen Lacey, Pocatello, ID, and Timothy Carney, also of Pocatello. Carney, who lettered in cross country and track & field, earned scholar-athlete honors for the third time. He led the Whitman men's cross country team to a conference title during his junior season.

Mike Craven, sophomore, 1993 graduate of Ferris High School, Spokane, WA; son of James & Carolyn Craven, Spokane, WA. Craven, who lettered in alpine skiing, earned scholar-athlete honors for the second time in two seasons. The Whitman men's alpine team captured its third straight conference title this past winter, and then combined with the cross country ski team to win the U.S. Collegiate Ski Association's national all-around title for the second straight year.

Scott Daukas, sophomore politics major; 1994 graduate of Westwood High School, Mesa, AZ; son of Frank & Nancy Daukas, Tempe, AZ. Daukas lettered in swimming. He holds the Whitman school record in the 200-yard and 400-yard individual medley, the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke, and the 100-yard breaststroke. He also shares the school record in two relay events.

Travis Erikson, senior music major; 1992 graduate of Kamiakin High School, Kennewick, WA; son of Lloyd & Christine Erikson, Kennewick, WA. Erikson, who lettered in soccer, earned scholar-athlete honors for the fourth time in four seasons at Whitman. He was one of 28 Whitman seniors who were elected this spring to the national honor society Phi Beta Kappa, which is one of the highest academic honors an undergraduate may receive.

Adam Graham-Squire, sophomore mathematics major; 1994 graduate of Ben Franklin High School, Seattle, WA; son of Elinor Graham, Seattle, WA, and James Squire, also of Seattle. Graham-Squire lettered in men's soccer.

Gene Hansen, freshman, 1995 graduate of Walla Walla High School, Walla Walla, WA; son of Norman & Margaret Hansen, Waitsburg, WA. Hansen lettered in golf.

Will Leighty, sophomore foreign languages & literatures (Spanish) major; 1994 graduate of Juneau-Douglas High School, Juneau, AK; son of William & Nancy Leighty, Juneau, AK. Leighty lettered in swimming.

Clifford Mah, sophomore, 1995 graduate of Benson Polytech High School, Portland, OR; son of Ken & Sylvia Mah, Portland, OR. Mah lettered in tennis. The Whitman men's tennis team, which includes a strong nucleus of freshmen and sophomores, finished its conference season with a 6-1 won-loss record. The Whitman men placed second in the conference championship tournament.

Robert Maysey, senior politics major; 1993 graduate of Arcadia High School, Phoenix, AZ; son of Lynda Maysey, Burlington, Ontario, Canada. Maysey, who lettered in baseball, earned scholar-athlete honors for the second time.

Chris Oze, junior chemistry/geology major; 1993 graduate of Bainbridge High School, Bainbridge Island, WA; son of Robert & Constance Oze, Bainbridge Island, WA. Oze, who earned scholar-athlete honors for the third time in three years, was recognized for his work as a student athletic trainer.

Alex Rolfe, junior history major; 1993 graduate of Sentinel High School, Missoula, MT; son of O. W. Rolfe, Missoula, MT. Rolfe, who lettered in cross country, earned scholar-athlete honors for the third time in three seasons. He won the conference title in cross country last fall, and he competed in the NAIA national championships for the second consecutive year. He also was honored last fall by the NAIA as an All-America Scholar-Athlete.

David Toomey, sophomore, 1994 graduate of Montgomery High School, Santa Rosa, CA; son of Catherine Jones, Germany. Toomey, who lettered in cross country and track & field, earned scholar-athlete honors for the second time.

Haroon Ullah, freshman, 1995 graduate of Richland High School, Richland, WA; son of Muhammed & Zarfashan Ullah, Richland, WA. Ullah, who lettered in tennis, teamed with Akshay Shetty, another Whitman freshman, to win the conference doubles title earlier this spring. Both Ullah and Shetty will compete in the NAIA national tennis tournament in late May.

Zach Vestal, junior geology major; 1993 graduate of Boise High School, Boise, ID; son of Robert & Bonita Vestal, Boise, ID. Vestal, who lettered in cross country skiing, earned scholar-athlete honors for the third time in three seasons. The Whitman men's and women's alpine and cross country teams have combined to win the U.S. Collegiate Ski Association's all-around national titles in each of the past two seasons. As a sophmore, Vestal won national cross country titles in one individual event and one relay event. He is a three-time Academic All-American.

Karl Wegmann, senior geology major; 1992 graduate of Port Angeles High School, Port Angeles, WA; son of John & Mary Wegmann, Port Angeles, WA. Wegmann, who lettered in alpine skiing, earned scholar-athlete honors for the third time. The Whitman men's alpine team has won three consecutive conference titles. Whitman also has claimed the men's and women's alpine and cross country all-around titles the past two seasons at the U.S. Collegiate Ski Association's national championships.

Mike Zotter, sophomore history major; 1994 graduate of Lincoln High School, Portland, OR; son of James & Mary Zotter, Portland, OR. Zotter, who lettered in soccer, earned scholar-athlete honors for the second time in two seasons.
