WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- For the second time this season, Whitman College soccer players Kristen Berndt and Courtney Porter have been named Northwest Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.
Berndt, a senior forward, scored four goals last weekend in two Whitman victories as Porter, a sophomore goalkeeper, posted her sxith and seventh shutouts of the season. Berndt and Porter were also named Players of the Week on Sept. 18.
Berndt (North Bend, Wash.; Mount Si HS) also earned the weekly NWC award on two occasions during her junior season. She led Whitman in scoring in each of her first three seasons, and is at the top of the Missionary scoring chart this fall with 10 goals and one assist. Her career totals, 41 goals and 13 assists, make her Whitman's most prolific scorer in two decades.
Porter (Redmond, Wash.; Inglemoor HS), in her first season as a full-time starter, has now captured the NWC weekly defensive award three times this fall. She also won the award last week, when another of her teammates, sophomore forward Corina Gabbert, was named Offensive Player of the Week after two Whitman road victories.
Whitman has won its last five games, outscoring its opponents 14-1. Porter, who leads the NWC in shutouts and save percentage, made 11 saves in last weekend's shutouts. She stuffed a point-blank shot in one game and made a diving deflection of a breakaway attempt in the other game.
Whitman, in third place in the NWC with a 7-3-2 record, hosts Pacific Lutheran this Saturday, followed by undefeated Puget Sound on Sunday. Both games start at noon at the Whitman Athletic Fields. Men's games between the same schools will follow at about 2:30 p.m. both days.
