Whitman's Matt Solomon Nets Second NWC Weekly Tennis Honor

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Matt Solomon, a Whitman College sophomore from Los Gatos, Calif., has been named Northwest Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time in the past month.

Solomon, who holds a No. 15 national ranking in singles, helped Whitman hold its own last week against top-ranked competition in four Spring Break matches in California. Despite missing a few key players to injury, Whitman won two of its four matches and is now 12-8 on the season.

Solomon was victorious in two of his three matches at No. 1 singles and teamed with brother Daniel Solomon to win three of four matches at No. 1 doubles. One of his victories in singles came in three sets against Matt Liebman, the No. 1 player for the University of Redlands. His only loss in singles came in three sets against Michael Greenberg, a Kenyon College sophomore who is ranked No. 10 nationally in singles.

In his fourth singles match last week, Solomon won his first set against the College of New Jersey's Michael Klimchak when the match was stopped because Whitman already had an insurmountable 6-1 lead in the team scoring. Klimchak has a No. 7 national ranking in singles.

Solomon, a graduate of St. Stephen's Episcopal School in Austin, Texas, is a three-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American.

The Whitman men's team returns to Northwest Conference action March 29-30 with matches at Willamette, Linfield and Pacific. Whitman is 10-0 in the NWC this season and has won its last 28 regular season matches against conference opponents.

Whitman also has matches set for March 30 at two NCAA Div. I schools, Portland State and the University of Portland.
