WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Faye Hutchison, winner of the 1999 Mignon Borleske Trophy at Whitman College, is small in stature yet tough as a Marine. In fact, the 5-foot-1 Hutchison is a Marine.
Hutchison, who balanced the academic rigors of Whitman with four seasons of both basketball and cross country running, completed a grueling 10-week Officer Candidates Class at the U.S. Marine headquarters during the summer before her senior year (click here for more details) at Whitman.
The Mignon Borleske Trophy, awarded by a vote of the Whitman coaching staff, is given annually to the most outstanding female student-athlete at Whitman. The trophy recognizes athletic ability and accomplishments, leadership and sportsmanship qualities, and contributions to the campus as a whole.
Hutchison was one of Whitman's top cross country runners in her final two years at Whitman. She placed second at the Whitman Invitational, third at the Spokane Harrier Classic, 15th at the Big Cross Invitational, and 18th at the Northwest Conference championships. She capped her senior season by placing ninth in the NCAA Div. III regional meet, helping the Missionaries finish second in a field of 16 schools.
Highlights of her junior cross country season included an eighth-placing showing at George Fox University's Bear Fete Classic, a ninth-place finish at the Whitman Invitational, and a 15th-place finish at Seattle's crowded Sundodger Invitational. As a sophomore, she placed fifth at the Eastern Oregon Invitational, while her best showing as a freshman was an eighth-place finish at the Whitworth Invitational.
Hutchison enjoyed her best basketball season as sophomore, averaging 5.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists as a part-time starter. A foreign languages and literature (Spanish) major at Whitman, she missed all but six games of her junior season while spending one semester studying in Spain. In her final game before leaving for Spain, Hutchison scored 17 points, hitting four of nine shots from 3-point range, while handing out seven assists and grabbing five rebounds.
Hutchison served as a captain of both the cross country and basketball teams during her senior year at Whitman.
