Skier, Volleyball Captain Share 1996 Mignon Borleske Trophy

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Brooke Edwards of Federal Way, Wash., and Tobey McDonald of Bellevue, Wash., both of whom graduated in May from Whitman College, were honored as co-winners of the 1994 Mignon Borleske Athletic Trophy, which is presented annually to the school's outstanding female athlete. The award recognizes accomplishments and athletic ability leadership and sportsmanship qualities, and contributions to the campus as a whole.

McDonald, an All-America member of Whitman's alpine ski team, qualified for the national championships in her final three seasons. As a freshman, she competed in the World University Games in Sapporo, Japan, where she placed 18th in the downhill.

Knee injuries slowed McDonald's senior season, although she recovered in time to place 14th in the giant slalom at the U.S. Collegiate Ski Association's national championships. That placing earned McDonald honorable mention All-America recognition and helped Whitman's women place second in the alpine and nordic combined team scoring.

As a sophomore, McDonald earned All-America honors in two events at the national championships. She placed fifth in the giant slalom and 10th in alpine combined. "Tobey was a good leader, a good motivator for the rest of our athletes," Whitman ski coach Tom Olson said. "Anyone would be proud to have her on their team." McDonald also competed on the varsity soccer team her first three years at Whitman.

McDonald, a 1990 graduate of Bellevue High School, majored in psychology. She is the daughter of Kirby & Diane McDonald, Bellevue.

A senior captain of the Whitman volleyball team, Edwards received honorable mention recognition on the all-Northwest Conference team last winter. "Brooke was very dedicated to her sport, and without question she was the leader of our volleyball team," Whitman athletic director Max Seachris said.

As a freshman at Whitman in 1990, Edwards received Whitman's "Rookie of the Year" award for volleyball. Edwards also worked as a student intern in the athletic department, assisting with a variety of projects, including recruiting and Whitman's intramural sports program.

Edwards, a 1990 graduate of Federal Way High School, majored in sociology and environmental studies at Whitman. She is the daughter of Karen Edwards, Federal Way.
