Olsson, NW's Top Alpine Skier, Wins Borleske Trophy

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Andy Olsson, the top men's alpine skier in the Northwest collegiate ranks the past three seasons, has been named winner of the 1998 Borleske Athletic Trophy, which is presented annually to the outstanding male student-athlete at Whitman College.

The award recognizes athletic ability and accomplishments, leadership and sportsmanship qualities, and contributions to the campus as a whole.

Olsson, a 1993 graduate of the Whiteman School in Steamboat Springs, Colo., paced the Whitman men's alpine team to four consecutive Pacific Northwest Ski Conference (PNSC) titles and three U.S. Collegiate Ski Association (USCSA) western region championships in four seasons. Olsson also was a key contributor as the men's and women's alpine and cross country ski teams combined to capture four straight USCSA all-around national championships.

Olsson dominated the Northwest Conference over the past three seasons, winning 13 of the 19 events he entered. He finished second to Whitman teammates in five of the six races he did not win. He also won one conference event as a freshman.

One of the highlights of Olsson's senior season came at the western region championships in Park City, Utah, where he claimed decisive victories in both the slalom and giant slalom events. Competing as a junior and sophomore in the regional championships, Olsson missed winning individual slalom titles by fractions of seconds. He placed second in both instances.

Olsson made his best showing in the highly-competitive USCSA national championships at the end of his junior season, placing fifth in the slalom and seventh in the giant slalom to earn All-American honors in both events. He added one All-American performance as a senior, placing 10th in the giant slalom after falling and failing to finish in the slalom. Because of a knee injury suffered near the end of his sophomore year, Olsson did not compete that year in the national championships, which typically feature top European skiers on athletic scholarships at U.S. colleges.

Olsson is the son and Britta and Harold Olsson of Bellevue, Wash.

The Borleske Trophy has been awarded to top male student-athletes at Whitman College since 1937.
