Saturday's Round of 16 matches will be followed by the quarterfinals, which are also slated for Bratton Tennis Center. The women's semifinals and finals are set for Sunday.
Friday's first day of action also included the first two rounds of doubles. Four schools -- Whitman, Linfield, Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound -- advanced two teams each into Saturday's quarterfinals. Those matches will take place after Saturday's singles matches are completed.
Katie Collier, a Whitman senior, teamed with Lentz for an 8-3 victory over Linfield's Melissa Maebori and Michelotti in Friday's second round. Collier and Lentz, the No. 6 seeds in doubles, started Friday with a first-round bye. They face Pacific Lutheran's Feltus and Petrzella in one of Saturday's quarterfinal matches.

Sunday, Sept. 24; Walla Walla, Wash.
What should have been a great day for the Linfield women's tennis team ended on a sour note Sunday when Wildcat senior Kasey Kuenzli, the top-seeded player in singles, suffered a knee injury as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northwest Regional Championship came to close on the Whitman campus.
In a Sunday morning semifinal in singles, Kuenzli skipped to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Puget Sound's Alyssa Sidoff, the No. 8 seed. In the other semifinal, which pitted two Linfield players against one another, No. 2 seed Becca Johnson notched a 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 3 seed Megan Rodgers.
In the singles final that followed, Kuenzli won the first set 6-4 and was even with Johnson at 4-4 in the second. That's when Kuenzli tumbled to the court with an apparent knee injury. She was taken by ambulance to a Walla Walla hospital.
With Kuenzli unable to continue, Johnson won the singles title by default.
The tournament's doubles title match was to follow the singles final. Kuenzli and her doubles partner, Sallie Katter, defaulted to Johnson and Rodgers, the top-seeded doubles duo.

"Katie basically summoned every last ounce of strength she had to play doubles, and that made a huge difference for us," Whitman coach Heidi Tate said. "She's still sick and wasn't able to play singles, but I'm sure we wouldn't have swept the doubles matches without her."
Collier, one of Whitman's senior captains, teamed with first-year player Margo Lentz for a 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles. Two more Missionary first-year players, Hadley DeBree and Divneet Kaur, won 8-0 at No. 2, and senior Emily Smith teamed with sophomore Katie Oost for an 8-1 triumph as No. 3.
"All three of our teams in doubles played excellent tennis," Tate said. "After getting swept in doubles on Saturday, it was great to see us come back to win all three on Sunday."

The Missionaries, now 7-3 in the NWC and 9-5 overall, left after the match on a Spring Break trip to California. Whitman plays at Cal Tech in Pasadena on Tuesday in the first of three matches.
Willamette, which saw its record fall to 3-7 in conference and 3-9 on the season, next plays on March 26 at Texas Lutheran.
On Sunday, Willamette had leads in all three doubles matches before Whitman rallied to win two of them. Katie Collier and Margo Lentz won 9-7 at No. 1, and it was Hadley DeBree and Divneet Kaur emerging with an 8-6 win at No. 2. Emily Elliott and Christy Newell were 8-4 winners for the Bearcats at No. 3.

The Whitman women's tennis team was within a point of claiming its 10th victory of the season Tuesday when rain canceled its match at Cal Tech in Pasadena, Calif. The Missionaries swept the doubles and were leading 4-0 when the rains came with five singles matches still in the first set.
First-year players Hadley DeBree and Margo Lentz were 8-4 winners in No. 1 doubles. Senior Maura Flaherty teamed with Divneet Kaur, another of Whitman's first-year players, to win by the same score at No. 2 doubles. Short-handed Cal Tech, with only five players available, defaulted at No. 3 doubles.
A Cal Tech default at No. 6 singles gave Whitman a 4-0 lead headed into the remaining doubles matches. The Missionaries held first-set leads in all but one of those matches when rain forced cancellation of the match.
Whitman is scheduled to play at Occidental (Los Angeles) on Wednesday and at Cal Lutheran (Thousand Oaks) on Thursday. Both matches start at 3 p.m.

The Missionaries, who continue Northwest Conference play Sunday at Pacific, are 13-5 on the season and 9-3 in conference. In third place, Whitman has just one more loss than second-place Puget Sound.
Whitman won all three doubles matches, but sophomore Katie Oost and first-year teammate Margo Lentz worked for an 8-6 victory in the No. 1 doubles match. Two more first-year Missionaries, Hadley DeBree and Divneet Kaur, notched an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, and senior Maura Flaherty and sophomore Alex Robinson won by the same margin at No. 3.

Winning its seventh consecutive match, the Whitman women's tennis team downed Pacific Lutheran 6-3 Friday afternoon in the Bratton Tennis Center.
The victory, coupled with Puget Sound's loss Friday at Whitworth, moved Whitman into sole possession of second place in the Northwest Conference. The Missionaries, now 11-3 in the NWC, are percentage points ahead of Puget Sound and its 9-3 conference mark.
That means second place is on the line when the Missionaries host Puget Sound Saturday. The match gets underway at 1 p.m. on Whitman's outdoor courts. In the first meeting between the two teams in early March in Tacoma, Puget Sound prevailed 5-4.
Whitman, which also downed Pacific Lutheran 6-2 earlier in the season, seized the early advantage Friday by winning two of three points in doubles. First-year players Hadley DeBree and Divneet Kaur won 8-5 at No. 2, and senior Maura Flaherty teamed with sophomore Katie Oost for an 8-1 victory at No. 3. Pacific Lutheran's Nicole Petrzelka and Erika Feltus picked off a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, the two teams split the first four matches to be completed. Oost and Flaherty won at No. 5 and No. 6 for Whitman. Feltus was a winner for PLU at No. 2 singles, and Liz Currey scored another point for the Lutes at No. 4.
With a 4-3 lead and two matches still in progress, the Missionaries needed one more win to clinch. Margo Lentz, another of Whitman's first-year players, did the honors at No. 3, finishing off a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Several minutes later, first-year Missionary Hadley DeBree completed a three-set comeback at No. 1 singles, winning the third set in a 10-3 super-tiebreaker.
After Saturday's match with Puget Sound, Whitman completes its regular season with an April 14 match at Whitworth. The NWC Championships are set for April 20-21 in Yakima, Wash.

Puget Sound regained possession of second place in the Northwest Conference women's tennis standings with a 5-4 victory over Whitman Saturday afternoon on the Missionary outdoor courts.
Downing Whitman by a single point for the second time this season, Puget Sound improved to 10-3 in the NWC and 11-3 overall. The Missionaries slipped to 11-4 in conference and 15-6 on the season.
"We played well but just came up a little short," Whitman coach Heidi Tate said. "We're still confident and hope to play Puget Sound again at the conference championship tournament."
After taking a 2-1 leading by winning twice in doubles, the Loggers made that margin stand up by splitting the six singles matches. Courtney Dunham and Alyssa Sidoff notched a quick win at No. 1 doubles, and Alana Wong and Alissa Wolf scored a narrow 9-7 victory at No. 3. Two of Whitman's first-year players, Divneet Kaur and Hadley DeBree, salvaged a point for Whitman at No. 2, winning 8-6.
The victorious Loggers got their wins in singles from Sidoff at No. 2, Katie Russell at No. 4 and Alana Wong at No. 6.
DeBree rallied for a three-set triumph at No. 1 singles. Margo Lentz, another of the first-year Missionaries, won in three sets at No. 3 singles, and senior Maura Flaherty remained undefeated in NWC singles play with a win at No. 6. Flaherty is 15-0 on the season against NWC opponents.

The Whitman women's tennis team wrapped up its regular season in fine fashion Saturday, scoring an 8-1 victory at Whitworth to finish with records of 16-6 overall and 12-4 in the Northwest Conference. Whitworth dropped to 9-11 on the season and 8-8 in conference.
Assuming a Puget Sound victory later today against Willamette, Whitman and Puget Sound will finish the season in a tie for second place in the final NWC standings. That is Whitman's best finish since it placed second in 2000.
Beating Whitworth for the second time this season, Whitman took the early lead by winning two of three matches in doubles. First-year players Hadley DeBree and Divneet Kaur won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, and senior Maura Flaherty teamed with sophomore Katie Oost for an 8-5 win at No. 3.
Whitman notched straight-set victories in the top three slots in singles. DeBree won at No. 1, senior Katie Collier was victories at No. 2, and Oost was a winner at No. 3.
Flaherty capped her perfect NWC season in singles with a three-set thriller at No. 4. She took the deciding third set in a 10-7 super-tiebreaker, running her record against conference opponents to 16-0. She is 19-1 in singles against all opponents this season.
Kaur also won a battle at No. 5 singles, taking the third set in a 10-5 super-tiebreaker. With the team scoring already decided, Whitman senior Emily Smith won at No. 6 singles in a 9-8 pro set.
Whitman will likely enter the NWC Championship tournament, set for April 20-21 in Yakima, Wash., as the third seed. The Missionaries lost a pair of 5-4 decisions to Puget Sound during the regular season.

Despite dropping a pair of three-setters in singles, the Whitman women's tennis team skipped past Willamette 5-4 Friday afternoon in an opening round match at the Northwest Conference Championships at the Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club.
Whitman, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, advanced into a late afternoon semifinal against Puget Sound, which had a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed. Whitman and Puget Sound finished the regular season with identical 12-4 records, but the Loggers got the higher seed based on two 5-4 wins over the Missionaries.
After twice beating Willamette by 7-2 scores this season, Whitman found itself in a much tougher battle in Friday's tournament setting. The Missionaries opened by winning two of three decisions in doubles, which proved to be the difference when the two teams then split the six matches in singles.
First-year Missionaries Hadley DeBree and Divneet Kaur won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, upping their record against conference foes to 13-2. Senior Maura Flaherty and sophomore Katie Oost added an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Senior Katie Collier and first-year teammate Margo Lentz lost 8-6 in a battle at No. 1 doubles.
DeBree won in straight sets at No. 1 singles, raising her conference record to 13-4, and Flaherty and Kaur stayed undefeated against NWC opponents with wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Flaherty, now 20-1 on the season and 17-0 in conference, won her second set 7-6 on a 6-4 tie-breaker. Kaur also cruised to a two-set victory, improving her singles record to to 11-2 overall and 9-0 in the NWC.
In the afternoon's most competitive matches, both Collier at No. 2 and Oost at No. 4 fell in three tough sets. Collier won her first set 6-4 but then dropped the next two by the same score. Oost evened her match with a 7-6 triumph in the second set, only to lose the deciding third set 7-6 on a 7-5 tie-breaker.
The loss dropped Willamette into a Saturday morning consolation match for fifth place.

With a sweep of doubles and a pair of three-set victories in singles, Puget Sound posted a 7-2 win over Whitman in the semifinals of the Northwest Conference Women's Tennis Championships Friday afternoon at the Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club.
Puget Sound's victory, its third this season at Whitman's expense, sends the Loggers to an NWC title match showdown with top-ranked Linfield at noon Saturday. The Missionaries play Pacific Lutheran at 8 a.m. Saturday for third place.
Puget Sound, the tournament's No. 2 seed, bolted to a 3-0 lead over third-seeded Whitman by winning all three matches in doubles. Hadley DeBree and Margo Lentz, two first-year Missionaries, picked off victories at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, but when senior Katie Collier at No. 2 and sophomore Katie Oost at No. 4 came up just a little short in three-set battles, Whitman's hopes for a comeback were lost.
DeBree bounced back from a first-set loss to beat Puget Sound senior Courtney Dunham for the third time this season in the No. 1 singles showcase. Raising her NWC singles record to 14-4, DeBree outlasted Dunham 14-12 in a third-set super-tiebreaker.
At No. 3 singles, Lentz breezed to a 6-1 first-set victory and then closed out her match with a 7-3 second-set tiebreaker. Oost came within a few points of beating Puget Sound senior Katie Russell at No. 4 singles. Russell took the deciding third set in a 10-8 super-tiebreaker.
Whitman senior Katie Collier got off to a good start in the No. 2 slot, winning her first set 7-6. But Puget Sound's Alyssa Sidoff rallied to win the next two.
Two Missionaries, senior Maura Flaherty at No. 5 and first-year teammate Divneet Kaur, suffered their first NWC losses of the season. Flaherty slipped to 17-1 while Kaur is now 9-1.
In two regular season matches, Puget Sound downed Whitman 5-4 and 7-2.

Sending coach Heidi Tate on her way as a winner, the Whitman women's tennis beat Pacific Lutheran 6-3 Saturday morning to claim third place at the Northwest Conference Tennis Championships at the Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club.
Tate is leaving the coaching profession after 10 years, including seven seasons at Whitman, to pursue a career in the medical field. With Saturday's win, her Missionaries finished the season with records of 18-7 overall and 14-5 in the NWC.
Beating Pacific Lutheran for the third time this season, Whitman moved into an early lead by winning two of three matches in doubles. First-year Missionaries Hadley DeBree and Divneet Kaur won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles, stretching their record to 14-3 against conference opponents. Senior Maura Flaherty and sophomore Katie Oost, who forged a doubles partnership late in the season, won 8-4 in the No. 3 match.
Whitman sealed its victory by taking three of six decisions in singles competition, which was delayed for 30 minutes at one point by a light rain. The difference came at No. 4 singles, where Oost rallied from a first-set loss to win in three. The comeback was a sweet one for Oost, who had suffered tough three-set losses in the two opening rounds of the tournament. Oost finished her season with a 14-4 singles mark against NWC foes.
Margo Lentz, another of Whitman's first-year players, cruised to a quick 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles, and senior Maura Flaherty put the finishing touches on a remarkable year with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph at No. 5. Flaherty, who endured her first conference loss of the season in yesterday's semifinal match against Puget Sound, compiled records of 21-2 overall and 18-1 in NWC play.
Kaur nearly notched a seventh team point for the Missionaries. But after winning the first set 6-3, she dropped the next two by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.
A two-time NWC Coach of the Year, Tate guided her teams to a 69-33 NWC dual match record in her seven seasons. Hannah Swee, an all-conference player who graduated from Whitman in 2005, takes over the head coaching position. Swee has been an assistant coach the past two seasons.
In a break from past seasons, the all-conference teams and post-season honors will not be announced until Monday.
