Point Guard's Politics Research Points Way on Latino Voting Rights

WALLA WALLA, Wash. Ian Warner, a politics major and senior point guard on the Whitman College men's basketball team, has sparked a fundamental debate about voting rights and Latino political representation in a city in western Washington.

Warner conducted research this past year, as part of Whitman's annual "The State of the State of Washington Latinos: 2006" report, that questions whether the relative lack of Latino political representation in Sunnyside, Wash., is due to the use of at-large city council elections.

For the most recent Yakima Herald-Republic newspaper article on reactions to Warner's research, please click here.

The two articles, Warner says, "do a great job summarizing the issues and my report."

A graduate of Woodinville (Wash.) High School, Warner plans to attend law school after receiving his Whitman degree in May. Captain of the men's basketball team, Warner is averaging 12.3 points, 5.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds as he heads into his final eight games.
