WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Hadley DeBree, a first-year player on the Whitman College women's tennis team, has been named Northwest Conference Player of the Week for a second time this season.
DeBree, who plays No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, had a hand in four victories in a pair of Northwest Conference matches last weekend. She won twice at No. 1 singles and worked with Divneet Kaur, also a first-year player, for two wins at No. 2 doubles.
In Whitman's 6-3 victory over Pacific Lutheran last Friday, DeBree outlasted senior Nicole Petrzelka in three sets, winning 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-3). She and Kaur won 8-6 in doubles.
DeBree also posted an impressive win in singles in Saturday's match against Puget Sound, bouncing back from a first-set loss to beat senior Courtney Dunham 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. DeBree and Kaur were 8-6 winners in doubles against the Loggers.
DeBree, a resident of Ketchum, Idaho, and graduate of Wood River High School (Hailey, Idaho), is 11-3 in singles against conference opponents in her first college season. She and Kaur (Eugene, Ore.) are 11-2 in doubles.
DeBree won her first NWC Player of the Week award a month ago after leading the Missionaries to victories over Whitworth and Pacific (click here for that news release).
In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings released last month, DeBree was ranked No. 15 in singles in the West Region of NCAA Div. III. As a team, Whitman was ranked No. 13 regionally. New ITA rankings are scheduled for release early next week.
Whitman is 15-6 on the season and 11-4 in the NWC, good enough for third place. Three of the Missionary losses in conference have come by 5-4 scores. Whitman wraps up its regular season when it plays Saturday at Whitworth in Spokane, Wash.
