WALLA WALLA, Wash. – For the second time this season, Rosa Brey, a Whitman College sophomore from Bozeman, Mont., has been named Northwest Conference Volleyball Player of the Week.
Brey, a 5-foot-10 middle blocker, received her latest award after powering Whitman to victories in its final two matches of the season. After hitting .737 with 15 kills and 10 digs in a 3-0 sweep of Whitworth, Brey hit .529 with 21 kills, 11 digs and seven blocks in a five-game victory at Pacific.
Whitman won its final five matches and seven of its final eight. The Missionaries finished fourth in the NWC, just one victory out of third place.
In 16 NWC matches, Brey ranked third in hitting percentage (.315), fifth in blocks (.98 per game) and seventh in kills (3.60 per game). For the entire season, she averaged 1.04 blocks per game, the second-best mark in the conference.
In a vote of coaches, Brey also was named this week to the All-Northwest Conference Second Team. Last fall in her first college season, Brey led the conference in blocks and earned All-NWC Honorable Mention recognition.
Brey, a Whitman captain this season, received her first NWC Player of the Week award in mid-October, after slamming 36 kills in two victories while hitting .438. One of those victories was a three-game sweep of nationally ranked Linfield. She had 18 kills and 12 digs in the Linfield win. After dropping four NWC matches in five games earlier in the season, Whitman recovered to beat each of the three teams that finished at the top of the conference standings. The Missionaries took two of three matches this season from NWC co-champion Pacific Lutheran.
Brey is a graduate of Bozeman (Mont.) High School.
