WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- David Lee, a Whitman College freshman from Eugene, Ore., has been named Northwest Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week.
In his first weekend of college dual meet competition, Lee was a winner in all six of the races in which he competed. He sparked the Whitman men's team to one-sided dual meet victories over both Lewis & Clark College (122-55) and and Albertson College (129-44).
Against Lewis & Clark, Lee won both the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. He also teamed with two freshmen and a sophomore to give Missionaries a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Lee notched a second victory in the 100-yard butterfly against Albertson, moving into 10th-place all-time at Whitman for that event. He also won the 200-yard freestyle and anchored the winning Missionary quartet in the 200-yard medley, overtaking his opponent in the final 25 yards.
Lee's performance was remarkable in that he and other Whitman swimmers were racing in a fatigued state, coach Jenn Blomme said. "We've been working very hard in the pool and very hard in the weight room, and we're not a fresh team at this point," Blomme said. "If we continue to compete this well, we're going to have a lot more success later in the season when we're not as tired."
Lee's early workouts also were compromised, Blomme noted, as he rehabilitated a summer ankle injury. "It is exciting to see David swimming so well so soon," she said. "We should all expect to see even more great swims from him and our men's team this season."
The Whitman swim teams host two more dual meets this month in the new Paul and Louise Harvey Pool, which is part of the new $10-million Baker Ferguson Fitness Center. Whitman battles Whitworth College on Nov. 11 and Willamette University on Nov. 18.
Whitman will also host the NWC swimming championships in February.
