In a match interruped by rain, moved to a second location and finally abbreviated due to time limitations, the Whitman women’s tennis team prevailed for a 5-2 Northwest Conference decision over George Fox Monday afternoon in western Oregon.

The match resumed at about 6:30 p.m. on the indoor courts at Lewis & Clark College, which had a limited number of courts available until 9 p.m.

By the time ran out at Lewis & Clark, Whitman had an insurmountable 5-2 lead and was up one set in the matches at No. 5 and No. 6, both of which were halted early in the second sets.

Senior Amy Kunkel-Patterson and first-year teammate Katie Oost dropped a close 8-6 decision at No. 3.

Monday, March 20
BYU-Hawaii 9, Whitman 0
Laie, Hawaii

Brigham Young University-Hawaii, the nation's second-ranked NCAA Div. II team, overwhelmed the Whitman women's tennis team 9-0 Monday afternoon in Laie, Hawaii.

The Seasiders, who have won five of the last seven Division II national titles, improved to 13-0 on the season. They posted a 5-2 victory over Division I New Mexico earlier on Monday. Whitman, which picked up a forfeit victory over Chaminade University earlier in the day, is now 7-7 on the season.

Compounding the defeat for Division III Whitman was the loss of its No. 1 singles player, Asiya Khaki, to injury. Down a set and even at 2-2 in the second set, Khaki rolled an ankle and is expected to miss the remainder of Whitman's Spring Break matches in Hawaii.

"It's too bad because Asiya was playing well in the second set against a very good player," Whitman coach Heidi Tate said. Khaki, a first-year player, was matched against Jing Jing Liu, a junior from Changsha, China, the top-ranked player in Division II.

The Seasiders have three other players ranked nationally in Division II's top 25: Tetyana Bula, senior from Lviv, Ukraine; Petra Teller, a sophomore Budapest, Hungary; and Gurianna Korinihona, a senior from Honiara, Solomon Islands.

"They obviously play at a few levels above us, but our women made them work for their points," Tate said. "They didn't just blow us off the courts."

Whitman has matches scheduled for Hawaii-Pacific on Wednesday and Hawaii-Hilo on Friday. Tate also hopes to get a match set for later in the week against Bowdoin College, a team that is also spending its Spring Break on the islands.

Saturday, April 1
Linfield 8, Whitman 1
Walla Walla, Wash.

In a match that was closer than the final score shows, the Linfield Wildcats downed the Whitman women's tennis team 8-1 Saturday in the Bratton Tennis Center.

The loss drops the Missionaries to 7-10 overall and 7-4 in NWC matches. The Wildcats maintained their one-match lead over Puget Sound in the race for first in the conference, upping their NWC record to a perfect 11-0 and their overall mark to 14-2.

Trish Hayward earned Whitman's only win of the day, taking the No. 6 singles match 6-1, 6-4 over Linfield's Molly Nelson. The No. 3 and No. 5 matches both went into tiebreakers, but unfortunately for Whitman, Linfield came out on top in both. At No. 3, it was Tracey Sorensen defeating Katie Oost 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7), and at No. 5 it was Hollin Buck downing Maura Flaherty 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7).

Linfield made a clean sweep of the doubles matches. In the No. 2 slot, Katie Collier and Hayward put up a good fight before eventually being defeated by Linfield's duo of Sorensen and and Kelli Sides by a score of 8-6.

Thursday, April 13
Whitman 5, Whitworth 3
Spokane, Wash.

Whitman slipped past Whitworth 5-3 in the first match of a women's tennis doubleheader in Spokane Thursday afternoon. The victory moved the Missionaries to 8-6 in the Northwest Conference, good enough for sole possession of fourth place. The loss drops Whitworth into fifth place with a 7-7 conference record.

Whitman grabbed two of three doubles matches to build an early 2-1 lead. Emily Smith and Asiya Khaki teamed up at No. 1 doubles to win a close 8-6 decision, and the duo of Katie Collier and Trish Hayward came through with an 8-5 triumph at No. 2 doubles.

Khaki and Smith added victories in singles play. Khaki came through in the No. 1 match, winning the decisive third set on a 7-5 tiebreaker. At No. 4, Smith bounced back from a first-set loss to win in three. Collier notched Whitman’s final team point at No. 2 singles, where she outmatched her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in an impressive win.

Whitman players weren't as fortunate in two other three-set singles matches. Trish Hayward dropped her third set 6-2 at No. 6, and Maura Flaherty was trailing 5-2 in her third set at No. 5 when that match was suspended. Because the No. 5 match was not completed, it does not count in the final team score.

Weather permitting, the two teams were slated to play a second match Thursday evening.

Winning 6-2 in a match that concluded at 10 p.m., the Whitman women's tennis team finished off a Thursday doubleheader sweep of Whitworth in Spokane, Wash. Earlier in the day, Whitman scored a 5-3 victory over the Pirates.

"The women competed hard today and played as well as I've ever seen them play," Whitman coach Heidi Tate said. "It made me proud to be their coach."

Just as in the first match, the Missionaries snagged two of three doubles matches to get on top early. Emily Smith and Asiya Khaki pulled off their second victory of the day at No. 1 doubles, and Katie Collier and Trish Hayward came through at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 win.

Whitman then dominated singles play to claim the victory. Khaki won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, and first-year player Katie Oost added a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles. Smith and Maura Flaherty chipped in with victories at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. No. 6 singles was not played.

The Missionaries improved to 9-6 in the Northwest Conference and in all probability nailed down the No. 4 seed in the conference championship tournament slated for later this month. Whitman wraps up its regular season at home at 11 a.m. Saturday, squaring off against Willamette.

Northwest Conference Championships

Round One; Friday, April 21
Whitworth 6, Whitman 1
Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club

Whitworth picked off close three-set decisions in two singles matches en route to an abbreviated 6-1 victory over Whitman in Friday morning's opening round of the Northwest Conference Women's Tennis Championships at the Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club.

The loss dropped Whitman into a Friday afternoon match with Willamette for fifth place. Whitworth, which was fielding a healthy line-up for the first time in two weeks, advanced to a Friday afternoon semifinal with No. 1-seeded Linfield.

As the No. 4 seed, Whitman entered the tournament on a three-match winning streak that included two victories over Whitworth last week. But the Pirates, seeded No. 5, played both of last week's matches without three of its top four players. With those players back in the line-up Friday morning, Whitworth took an early 2-1 lead with wins in two of the three doubles matches.

Seniors Marta Jankowska and Amy Kunkel-Patterson gave Whitman its only doubles victory, taking the No. 3 match by an 8-6 count. The final outcome tilted in Whitworth's favor when the Pirates won three-set tussles at No. 1 and No. 4 singles.

In a battle of first-year players at No. 1, Whitworth's Jamie Kneese edged Whitman's Asiya Khaki on a 9-7 third-set tiebreaker. At No. 4 singles, Whitman's Emily Smith lost her third-set tiebreaker to Chelsea Sweetin by a 10-8 count.

With Whitworth holding an insurmountable lead after the first four singles matches were completed, the No. 5 and No. 6 matches were not finished.

The outcome left Whitman with records of 10-7 in conference and 10-13 on the season. Whitworth improved to 10-9 overall and 9-8 in NWC matches.
