Singles, First Round
As the only Whitman entry not seeded in the top 16, Dane Miller made a statement in the opening round of singles play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southwest Regional, which got underway Friday at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
Miller, a junior, knocked off the No. 11 seed, Steven Campbell, a sophomore at the University of Texas-Tyler, in three sets.
Whitman's other three entries -- juniors Steven Ly, Phalkun Mam and Robbie Munday -- won in straight sets in the opening round.
Miller notched his victory with scores of 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-1). Given the size of the tournament, any matches that go beyond two sets will be decided with a 10-point super-tiebreaker in the third set.
"That was a good win for Dane," Whitman coach Jeff Northam said. "He faltered a bit in the second set but then came back strong in the third."
Ly, the No. 5 seed, scored a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jay Shroff, a junior at Southwestern University (Georgetown, Texas). Mam, the No. 10 seed, pitched a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at Colin Bloodworth, a freshman at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Belton, Texas). Seeded No. 16 in singles, Munday posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jordan Gilbreatt, a freshman at Howard Payne University (Brownwood, Texas).
The second round of singles is set for early Friday afternoon. The first round of doubles play follows in the late afternoon. Whitman's entries in doubles are Ly-Mam and Munday-Miller.
Trinity, an NCAA Div. III national powerhouse, is hosting the tournament on 16 outdoor courts. Temperatures Friday were in the mid-80s with high humidity. Those conditions were a welcome relief from a recent hot spell that sent temperatures above 100 for seven straight days.
The ITA Southwest Regional features dozens of NCAA Div. III players from schools in the Northwest Conference, Southwest Athletic Conference, and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The competition continues through Sunday. The tournament's singles and doubles winners advance to the ITA's National Small College Championships in October.
Singles, Second Round
Whitman juniors Steven Ly, Phalkun Mam and Dane Miller picked off second-round victories in singles play Friday afternoon as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southwest Regional continued in San Antonio, Texas.
The only disappointing second-round note for Whitman was sounded in junior Robbie Munday's tough three-set loss.
Ly, the tournament's No. 5 seed in singles, had the easiest time in the second round, rolling to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Brandon Armour, a freshman from McMurry University (Abilene, Texas).
Meanwhile, both Mam and Miller notched three-set victories over opponents from Trinity, the tournament host. Mam, the No. 10 seed, downed junior D.J. Petros 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7). Miller beat sophomore James Furr by nearly identical scores, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7).
Munday also played a Trinity opponent in the second round. After Munday took the first set 6-4, talented freshman Ryan DeSantis bounced back to win the second set by the same score. DeSantis then outlasted Munday 12-10 in the third-set super tie-breaker.
Ly, Mam and Miller all advanced to Saturday morning's round of 16. The first-round of doubles action starts late this afternoon. Ly and Mam, the No. 2 seed in doubles, play the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor's Jeff Contreras and Landon Slaughter. Miller and Munday, the No. doubles seed, do battle with Jay Govan and Josh Schumann of Schreinder University (Kerrville, Texas).
Doubles, First Round
A pair of Whitman duos had little difficulty in the opening round of doubles play Friday evening at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southwest Regional in San Antonio, Texas.
Juniors Steven Ly and Phalkun Mam, seeded No. 2 in the doubles bracket, tallied an 8-2 victory over two University of Mary Hardin-Baylor players, junior Jeff Contreras and freshman Landon Slaughter.
Juniors Robbie Munday and Dane Miller, the No. 7 seeds in doubles, scored an 8- 5 win over Jay Govan, a senior at Schreiner University, and his teammate, sophomore Josh Schumann.
The second round of doubles is set for Saturday afternoon.
A good run through the singles bracket ended for Whitman juniors Steven Ly and Phalkun Mam in the Saturday quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southwest Regional in San Antonio, Texas.
Ly, the No. 5 seed in singles, lost 6-2, 6-2 to top-ranked Ricky Butenko, a senior and former NCAA Div. I player now competing for Pacific Lutheran. Earlier in the day, Ly rallied for a 2-6, 7-6, 6-0 victory over Jose Borges, a freshman at Trinity University, the tournament host school.
Mam, the No. 10 seed, made the quarterfinals by knocking off Pacific Lutheran senior Matt Larimore, the No. 3 seed, by scores of 7-6, 6-4. Mam then lost a tough 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 quarterfinal decision to Trinity sophomore Oliver Gaines, the No. 6 seed.
Earlier Saturday in the singles round of 16, Gaines notched a 6-2, 6-2 win over Whitman junior Dane Miller.
In doubles competition Saturday, Miller and teammate Robbie Munday, also a junior, scored an 8-1 victory in the round of 16, beating senior Kevin Cook and sophomore Jordan Rephsar of the the University of Texas-Tyler.
Later in the day, however, Miller and Munday dropped an 8-1 decision to Trinity senior John Matthews and junior D.J. Petros.
A second doubles team from Trinity, one of the nation's top Division III tennis programs, upset Ly and Mam, Whitman's top doubles duo, in Saturday's round of 16. Trinity sophomores Stuart Row and David Tran won that match 9-7.
Opening the season with the first of two Saturday matches, the Whitman men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to NAIA powerhouse Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, Idaho.
Whitman's only team point came courtesy of sophomore Adam Chemerinsky's win over Cedric Dufour, a freshman from Evian, France, in the No. 5 singles match. Bouncing back from a first-set loss, Chemerinsky won the second set 7-5 and took the third in a 10-5 super-tiebreaker.
Juniors Dane Miller and Robbie Munday picked up a victory in No. 2 doubles, winning 8-4. But the Warriors claimed the doubles team point with a victory at No. 1, where Whitman juniors Steven Ly and Phalkun Mam lost 9-7, and a win at No. 2.
While Lewis-Clark State won five matches in singles, not all of those wins came easily. Ly lost in three sets at No. 1 singles, falling to Ara Sarkissian, a junior from Uppsala, Sweden. At No. 4 singles, Munday lost in three sets to Ari Zaslow, a junior from Ashland, Ore. And at No. 2 singles, Mam fell 6-4, 7-5 to Borja Morlas, a junior from Barcelona, Spain.

A few weeks ago, the University of Portland men's tennis team dropped a 6-0 decision to the University of Mississippi, the nation's fifth-ranked NCAA Div. I team, in a match that wasn't as one-sided as the score indicates. Sunday morning, the NCAA Div. I Portland Pilots turned the tables, downing Whitman 7-0 in a match that was also closer than the score shows.
Although the Pilots swept the six singles matches, they needed three sets in one match and set tiebreakers in two others.

Portland improved to 4-5 on the season while the Missionaries slipped to 4-2. Whitman's early season record includes victories over two other NCAA Div. I programs, Gonzaga and the University of Idaho.

Winning its second match of the day, the Whitman men's team rolled to a 7-0 victory over Puget Sound Saturday afternoon in Tacoma, Wash. Off to its best start in years, the Missionaries are 8-0 in the Northwest Conference and 10-0 on the season. The Loggers slipped to 4-1 in league play.
Whitman rolled unchecked through the three doubles matches and then completed its shutout with straight-set wins in each of the six singles matches. In five of their eight NWC wins, the Missionaries have held the opposition scoreless.
After scrambling from behind earlier in the day to beat Pacific Lutheran's highly regarded Ricky Butenko, Whitman's Steven Ly cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory in his No. 1 singles match against Puget Sound. Ly, a junior, is off to a 6-0 start at No. 1 singles against conference opponents this season. He and doubles partner Phalkun Mam, also a junior, are 8-0 at No. 1 doubles in NWC play.
The Missionaries also got wins from freshmen Justin Hayashi and Justin Shoolery at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, and from sophomore Robert Edles-Rye at No. 6.
Whitman plays two more NWC matches next Friday before embarking on a Spring Break swing through California. The Missionaries will play a series of five matches in five days.

The Missionaries improved to 11-2 on the season and to 9-0 against NWC opponents. Willamette dropped to 2-5 in conference matches.
With coach Jeff Northam juggling his line-up, Mam picked up his 99th career victory while teaming with sophomore Robert Edles-Rye for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles. Mam then polished off his 100th Whitman victory with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles.
Robbie Munday, also a junior, also won twice to increase his career victory total to 99. Munday and junior teammate Dane Miller were victors at No. 1 doubles, and Munday posted a straight-set win at No. 2 singles.
Freshmen Justin Hayashi and Andrew Knox contributed to the Missionary with victories at No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Hayashi also teamed with sophomore Adam Chemerinsky for the win at No. 2 doubles.

Whitman has shut out conference opponents seven times in rolling to a 10-0 NWC record. The Missionaries are 12-2 on the season. Friday's two losses dropped Willamette to 2-6 in conference matches.
Munday notched his 100th career victory at Whitman when he and junior Dane Miller posted an 8-0 win in No. 2 doubles. Munday added to his victory total in singles, winning 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1.

The Whitman men’s tennis team was no match Monday for the University of California-Santa Cruz, the nation’s top-ranked NCAA Div. III team. The Banana Slugs snapped Whitman’s eight-match winning streak, handing the Missionaries a 7-0 defeat in Santa Cruz.
Now 12-3 on the season, Whitman failed to win a set against their hosts, although they came close in a few cases.
In No. 2 doubles, Missionary juniors Dane Miller and Robbie Munday let a few match points slip away (on their own serve) before dropping a close 9-7 decision to Igya Gendelman and Max Ortiz. Munday also posted a good battle at No. 3 singles before falling 6-4, 7-6. Meanwhile, at No. 4 singles, Miller led 5-3 in his first set before losing 7-5 en route to a two-set defeat.
Phalkun Mam, another Whitman junior, also had a good first set, losing 6-4, before falling 6-0 in the second.
The Banana Slugs, the defending Division III national champs, are 6-2 this season. Their early season losses came at the hands of the University of Santa Clara, an NCAA Div. I school, and Gustavus Adolphus, another Division III tennis powerhouse.
Santa Cruz has advanced to the Division III Final Four in 16 of the past 18 seasons. The Banana Slugs have lost just one match on their home courts in the past 20 years.
Whitman continues its Spring Break swing through California on Wednesday with a 2 p.m. match at Chapman, which began the spring season ranked No. 24 in the nation. Chapman, off to a 6-5 start, is ranked No. 8 in the West region, one spot ahead of Whitman.

Picking up a big win on the second leg of its Spring Break swing through California, the Whitman men's tennis team knocked off nationally-ranked Chapman University on its home courts Wednesday afternoon in Orange, Calif.
Whitman ran its season record to 13-3. Chapman, which was ranked No. 24 in NCAA Div. III to start the spring season, slipped to 6-6 on the year.
In West Region rankings, Chapman began the season in the No. 8 spot, one slot ahead of Whitman. The Missionaries hope to move up several notches by the time rankings are updated in mid-April.
"This was a big win for us today," Whitman coach Jeff Northam said. The victory also gives Whitman an "indirect win," Northam noted, over No. 7 Hardin-Simmons University (Abilene, Texas), which lost to Chapman 5-2 last week.
Whitman also has an early season win over Pacific Lutheran, which began the season with a No. 5 regional ranking and a No. 10 national ranking.
The Missionaries have three stops left on their Sunshine State tour, starting Thursday afternoon with Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks. The Kingsmen, ranked No. 6 in the region and No. 15 in the nation, lost to Pacific Lutheran 5-2 in late February and then bounced back earlier this month to edge Chapman 4-3.
In Wednesday's win at Chapman, Whitman won the doubles point with victories from juniors Dane Miller and Robbie Munday at No. 2 and from sophomore Adam Chemerinsky and freshman Justin Hayashi at No. 3. Robert Chu, Chapman's senior All-American, and junior teammate Hunter Jack got the win at No. 1 doubles, beating Missionary juniors Steven Ly and Phalkun Mam.
Whitman wrapped up its victory by taking four of six matches in singles. Mam and Miller were winners at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively, as were Chemerinsky at No. 5 and Hayashi at No. 6.
In No. 1 singles, Chu got past Ly in two sets, although the 7-6 second set came down to a 7-5 tiebreaker.
Whitman concludes its Spring Break trip later in the week against two more nationally-ranked teams, No. 9 Redlands on Friday and No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday. The Missionaries were not ranked nationally to begin the season.

Compensating for a frustrating loss of the doubles point, the Whitman men's tennis team stormed back to win five of six matches in singles to pin a 5-2 setback on Cal Lutheran Thursday afternoon in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
Beating a nationally-ranked team for the second time in two days, the Missionaries improved to a sparkling 14-3 on the season. The Kingsmen, who slipped to 7-6 overall, began the season ranked No. 15 nationally in NCAA Div. III and No. 6 in the West Region.
Whitman, ranked No. 9 regionally in the preseason, have wins in recent weeks over three teams with a higher ranking.
Cal Lutheran got the early jump Thursday, mounting rallies for victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to grab 1-0 lead in the team scoring. After Whitman's Steven Ly and Phalkun Mam raced to a 5-2 lead at No. 1, Cal Lutheran's Karlo Arapovic and Joel Wetterholm took the next six games to win 8-5. Meanwhile, at No. 3 doubles, Whitman youngsters Adam Chemerinsky and Justin Hayashi rolled to a quick 8-1 triumph.
That left the doubles point to the winner of the No. 2 match. Whitman's Dane Miller and Robbie Munday, up 8-7, let two match points slip away as the match headed to a tiebreaker tied at 8-8. Miller and Munday had two more match points in the tiebreaker, but Cal Lutheran's Forrest Hunt and Ryan Felix hit a few huge shots and emerged with a 9-8 victory.
"In the span of about 20 minutes we went from dominating the doubles point to losing all momentum and the doubles point," Whitman coach Jeff Northam said. "Needless to say we were all disappointed and flat going into singles."
As they have in other close matches this season, however, the Missionaries persevered and found a way to win, sweeping the singles except for a tough battle at No. 1. Mam won in three sets at No. 2, while Munday, Miller, Chemerinsky and Hayashi had a relatively easy time in spots two through six.
Whitman concludes its Spring Break trip to California with matches against two more nationally-ranked teams. The Misionaries face No. 9 University of Redlands on Friday and No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) on Saturday. Redlands is No. 4 regionally, one spot in back of CMS.

A senior-laden University of Redlands, ranked No. 9 nationally in NCAA Div. III, downed Whitman 6-1 Friday in a match interrupted by rain and then moved to another location. The match started in the afternoon on the Redlands home court but was later moved to nearby Palm Springs, where it was finished under the lights in windy conditions.
"We would love another shot at Redlands," Whitman coach Jeff Northam said. "I don't think we played all that well in the wind, and it was very windy. I know we could make the match much closer, but that's how the ball bounces."
Whitman junior Dane Miller and Robbie Munday continued their strong play in doubles, winning 8-6 in the No. 2 slot. Redlands took the two remaining doubles match, however, to claim the doubles point.
Whitman's Steven Ly, also a junior, picked up a nice win at No. 1 singles, taking a two-set decision from Andrew Elling, a senior from Issaquah, Wash. Munday dropped a three-setter at No. 3 singles, and sophomore Adam Chemerinsky fell in three sets at No. 6, losing an abbreviated third set on an 11-9 super-tiebreaker.
"Singles was competitive but we couldn't pull out any of the close matches," Northam said. "Redlands is a very tough team with a lot of seniors -- five -- making their last stand."
Whitman, now 2-2 on its Spring Break swing through California, wraps up its trip on Saturday with a match at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, ranked No. 8 nationally.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS), ranked No. 8 nationally in NCAA Div. III, ran its season record to 12-3 with a pair of victories Saturday, one of them a 6-1 win over Whitman. The loss dropped the Missionaries to 14-5 as they wrapped up a week-long series of five matches against nationally ranked teams in California.
In a match that started with singles, Whitman picked up its only point when junior Steven Ly won his second match in as many days, beating junior William Ellison 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1. Dane Miller, another member of Whitman's strong junior class, lost in three sets at No. 4 to CMS junior Eric Chow.
In doubles, CMS's impressive freshmen duo, Guillaume Schils and Lawrence Wang outpointed Ly and Phalkun Mam by a 8-5 margin in the No. 1 match. Schils and Wang won last fall's ITA national doubles title.

Whitman's Steven Ly was a straight-set winner at No. 1 singles, but Pacific Lutheran won every other match to post a 6-1 Northwest Conference tennis victory over the Missionaries Saturday morning at the Bratton Tennis Center.
The loss was Whitman's first NWC defeat of the season, dropping the Missionaries to 12-1 in conference and 16-6 overall. PLU, which lost a 4-3 decision to Whitman earlier this season in Tacoma, improved to 14-1 in conference and 15-6 on the season.
The Lutes got the early jump, winning all three matches in doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the team scoring. Ly, a Whitman junior, rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 singles match, but PLU seniors Ricky Butenko and Ben Schaefer scored quick wins in the No. 2 and No. 4 matches, respectively, to give the Lutes a 3-1 lead.
Matt Larimore, a third PLU senior, tallied the clinching fourth team point with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. With the match already won, PLU's Jeff Larimore downed Whitman's Adam Chemerinsky in a battle of sophomores at No. 5 singles, and junior Jeff Loranger scored a three-set victory over Missionary freshman Justin Hayashi at No. 6. Whitman, the 2004 NWC champion, and Pacific Lutheran, last year's titlist, split their two regular meetings earlier this spring.
Saturday's championship match gets underway at noon.
Whitman got the early jump on Linfield Friday, with Steven Ly and Phalkun Mam winning at No. 1 doubles and Robbie Munday teaming with Robert Edles-Rye for a victory in the No. 2 match. Missionaries Dane Miller and Adam Chemerinsky dropped a 9-7 decision at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Ly was a two-set winner at No. 1, but Mam was upended at No. 2 in three sets. Munday and Miller picked up wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, and freshman Justin Hayashi scored Whitman's fifth team point with a triumph at No. 6.
Whitman heads into Saturday's NWC finale with records of 15-1 in conference matches and 19-6 on the season. Pacific Lutheran sports records of 16-1 and 18-8.

Playing well in doubles but falling just a little short in singles, Whitman dropped a 5-2 decision to Pacific Lutheran in the men's Northwest Conference tennis championship match Saturday afternoon at the Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club.
Whitman took the early 1-0 lead, winning two of three matches in doubles. But of the four matches in singles that went to three sets, Pacific Lutheran won three to turn the final tide in its favor.
Steven Ly and Phalkun Mam helped get the Missionaries off to a good start, beating Pacific Lutheran's Ricky Butenko and Matt Larimore by a 9-8 (7-4) count in the No. 1 doubles match. Dane Miller and Adam Chemerinsky pulled off Whitman's second doubles victory, winning 8-4 in the No. 3 match.
It wasn't Whitman's day in singles, however. Ly, Miller and Justin Hayashi all lost in three sets. Chemerinsky scored Whitman's only victory in singles, winning in three sets at No. 5.
Whitman ended its season with records of 15-2 against NWC opponents and 19-7 overall. Pacific Lutheran, which split its two regular season meetings with Whitman, improved to 17-1 in conference play and 19-8 on the season.
Pacific Lutheran edged Whitman 4-3 for last year's NWC title. Two years ago, it was Whitman downing the Lutes 5-2 for the conference crown.
