Whitman College Women's Soccer

Fall 2005 Season Highlights

Saturday, Sept. 3

Chapman 3, Whitman 2

Despite getting one goal each from Kristen Berndt and Sammie Arthur, last season's top scorers, the Whitman women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 season-opening decision to Chapman University Saturday afternoon on day one of the Whitworth Women's Soccer Invitational in Spokane, Wash.

Whitman took control of the match early, with Arthur's goal coming at 22:56 of the first half. The junior forward beat the Chapman keeper to the upper left shelf after accepting a nifty pass from senior midfielder Emily Marshall.

"It was a great goal," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. The Missionaries then kept the Panthers off the scoreboard for the remainder of the first half thanks in part to senior goalkeeper Annie Owens.

The second half saw a flurry of early action. After the Panthers tied the game less than three minutes into the second half, Whitman's Berndt answered back six minutes later. Berndt capitalized on a through ball from Marshall, who notched her second assist on the play.

Whitman's 2-1 lead only held for a few minutes, however, as Chapman responded with its second goal. The Panthers later tallied the game-winning goal with less than nine minutes left to play.

"It was the kind of game that was just great to watch," Shields said. "Both teams played very well, and although a win would have been nice, it was an solid start to the season."

Chapman is one of Division III's toughest women's soccer programs, having earned six consecutive post-season berths.

The next test for Whitman comes tomorrow in day two of the Whitworth Invitational. The Missionaries play Cal State East Bay, who beat host Whitworth 1-0 in Saturday's other first-round game. Whitman and Cal State play at 11 a.m.

Whitman 2, California State East Bay 1 (OT)

The Whitman women's soccer team foiled Cal State East Bay's shot at winning the Whitworth Invitational on Sunday, handing the Pioneers a 2-1 defeat in overtime. Each of the four teams in the Spokane tournament split their two season-opening games.

Despite a flurry of first-half action resulting in 10 shots for Whitman and eight for Cal State East Bay, neither team managed to score. Senior Kara Mackenzie just missed on one scoring opportunity that would have given Whitman an early lead.

Whitman took another 10 shots in the second half and finally capitalized in the 80th minute when sophomore Kristen Berndt rifled home a shot to the top shelf. Whitman coach Scott Shield called Berndt's score, her second in two games, a "fantastic goal." She amassed 12 shots, seven on goal, in the two games.

The Pioneers responded three minutes later with a goal of their own, however, forcing an overtime period. "We had a lot of chances in regulation," Shields said. "We missed a few that I'd have liked to have seen go in."

Whitman managed three more shots in overtime, one of which proved to be the game-winner from junior captain Sammie Arthur. Megan McConville, also a junior, won a 50/50 ball and crossed it to Arthur who scored her second goal of the weekend.

"It was great to get that first win under our belt," Shields said. "I'm happy with the split this weekend."

Whitman looks for its second victory of the season this Thursday, Sept. 8, when it hosts NCAA Div. II Northwest Nazarene at 7 p.m. at the Whitman soccer complex.

Whitman 2, Northwest Nazarene 1

The Whitman women's soccer team survived a thriller Thursday night, beating Northwest Nazarene University by 2-1 score at the Whitman Athletic Fields. The win elevates the Missionaries to 2-1 on the season, while Northwest Nazarene drops to 2-3.

Whitman set the tone early with a chip-in goal at the 5:00 mark by junior midfielder Megan McConville. Her shot just cleared the outstretched hands of the Crusaders' keeper.

Whitman's defensive backfield, anchored by senior keeper Annie Owen, took over after that, scarcely allowing Northwest Nazarene into its penalty box.

The second half continued along those same lines until the 86th minute when Crusader sub Paula Spencer penetrated the Whitman defense and sent a cross into the box. The ball was deflected into the net, with credit for the goal going to Kristi Metzeger.

Now seemingly destined for overtime, the game took another dramatic twist. Whitman sophomore Kristen Berndt, who had been knocking on the door the whole night, accepted a pass from junior midfielder Betsy Neel and with an amazing left foot managed to curl the ball into the far-side netting with just 36 seconds remaining.

"We were lucky to pull out a win there," coach Scott Shields said. "They were a good team with great speed. I thought they exposed some weaknesses that we can work on to help us during conference play. But that's what Kristen does, she scores goals."

The Missionaries will have a chance to extend their winning streak to three on Sept. 17, when they open Northwest Conference play in Newberg, Ore., against George Fox University.

Whitman 1, George Fox 0

The Whitman women's soccer team won its third straight game Saturday afternoon, opening Northwest Conference play with a 1-0 victory over George Fox in Newberg, Ore. The Missionaries raised their season record to 3-1, dropping the Bruins to 3-1 overall.

A first-half breakaway gave Whitman the lone goal of the game. Senior Hillary Chisholm found sophomore Kristen Berndt streaking down the sideline, and Berndt beat Bruin keeper Jessica Cardwell for her fourth goal in as many games. It was the first goal the Bruins have conceded this season.

One goal was all that Whitman senior keeper Annie Owen needed, posting her first shutout of the season while making four saves. Whitman kept the pressure on Cardwell, forcing her to make 12 saves against 19 shots. Berndt led the offense with six shots. Senior Jennifer Telfair had three more.

The victory marked Whitman's ninth straight win over George Fox. Two Missionary victories last season included 3-0 win in which Berndt had a goal and Owen claimed the shutout in goal.

Whitman travels to Salem on Sunday for a noon game against Willamette.

Willamette 4, Whitman 1

The Whitman women's soccer team wasn't able to overcome a slow start Sunday afternoon, dropping a 4-1 Northwest Conference decision to Willamette in Salem, Ore. The Missionaries are 3-2 in the season, 1-1 in the NWC. The Bearcats are 3- 3 overall and also 1-1 in conference.

The Bearcats started the scoring in the eighth minute with a deep chip that found the back of the net. Willamette added two more goals in the 25th and 33rd minutes to overwhelm a momentarily stunned Whitman defense.

"We can't afford to start that slowly against Northwest Conference opponents; the teams are too strong," Whitman coach Scott Shields said.

Whitman played Willamette to a second-half draw, with first-year keeper Erica Goad getting her first taste of collegiate soccer. The lone bright spot for the Missionary offense came in the 79th minute on a goal from senior forward Mckenzie Hoffman, her first of the year. "It was good to see Hoffman get on the board," Shields said.

Whitman hopes to get back on track next weekend as it hosts NWC foes Linfield and Pacific. Games will be at noon Saturday and Sunday.

Whitman 3, Linfield 1

The Whitman women's soccer team upped its Northwest Conference record to 2-1, defeating a young Linfield squad 3-1 at the Whitman Athletic Fields Saturday afternoon.

The Missionaries struck first, midway through the first half, when senior Mckenzie Hoffman rifled a half-volley into the back of the net from 15 yards out. Senior Emily Marshall notched her fourth assist of the season on the play. "That was a highlight goal," Whitman coach Scott Shields said.

Linfield answered back, though, on an unassisted Chelsey Stoltz scoring strike in the 33rd minute. The game remained tied 1-1 at halftime.

Whitman came out firing in the second half and was soon rewarded. Twelve minutes after resumption of play, senior Hillary Chisholm chipped a ball over Linfield keeper Allison Cartmill and into the side-netting to put Whitman ahead for good. Cartmill then made several spectacular saves to keep the Missionaries from extending their lead. But with 14 minutes left on the clock, Whitman junior Betsy Neel closed out the scoring on a blast from the right side, after a nice cutback move created space. Senior Jennifer Telfer got the assist.

Hoffman, who missed Whitman’s early games due to injury, has now scored a goal in each of her last two games. Saturday’s goals were the first of the season for both Chisholm and Neel.

"Linfield is a good team," Shields said. "They're young, but they're very fast. We just stuck with what we do best."

Whitman outshot the Wildcats 14-11, which included a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.

Whitman, now 4-2 on the season, hosts Pacific Lutheran at noon Sunday. Linfield, 0-3 in the conference and 1-4-1 overall, plays at Whitworth on Sunday.

Whitman 2, Pacific 0

The Whitman women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-1 Northwest Conference victory over Pacific Sunday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields. Despite outshooting the Boxers 20-5, the Missionaries trailed for much of the game and did not score for the first 76 minutes.

Pacific took a 1-0 lead into half time, thanks to Laura Hill's corner-kick goal on a header from five yards out. Said Whitman coach Scott Shields, "Every goal I can remember that Pacific has scored against us the last two years has been on a set play."

The Missionaries played a strong second half, finally converting a chance in the 77th minute when sophomore Kirsten Berndt headed home a ball. It was Berndt's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

After threatening to score several more times, the Missionaries sealed the victory when senior Jennifer Telfer scored on a shot from just outside the 18 with less than seven minutes remaining. Telfer's goal, her first of the season, was assisted by senior Mckenzie Hoffman.

"I think this was one of those games where the difference was being at home," Sheilds said. "We were just a little fresher in the second half. Also, we switched to three forwards up top and showed them something new."

The Missionaries improved to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. Pacific slipped to 4-2-1 overall, including a 2-1-1 mark in the NWC.

Whitman plays two NWC games in Tacoma next weekend, one against Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday and a second against the University of Puget Sound on Sunday. Both games start at noon.

Pacific Lutheran 2, Whitman 1

The Whitman women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Pacific Lutheran Saturday in Tacoma, Wash. The Lutes scored the game-winning goal in the final five seconds, leaving both teams with identical records, 5-3 on the season and 3-2 in the Northwest Conference.

Whitman trailed the Lutes 1-0 at halftime. Pacific Lutheran Megan Shannon scored in the 31st minute of a first half that saw each team limited to just three shots.

Whitman got its goal at the 72:00 mark when Kristen Mittelstedt's cross was pounded home by Betsy Neel. Whitman kept firing away at the Lute defense, amassing 11 second-half shots. Whitman senior Jennifer Telfer led the Missionaries with six shots.

With just seconds remaining in regulation, a Pacific Lutheran shot deflected off Whitman keeper Annie Owen and bounced to Shannon for the game winner.

Whitman will stay in Tacoma to face Puget Sound at 12pm tomorrow.

Whitman 0, Puget Sound 0

Ninety minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime went for naught as Whitman and Puget Sound played to a 0-0 Northwest Conference tie Sunday afternoon in women’s soccer action in Tacoma, Wash.

The Missionaries saw their record slip to 5-3-1 on the season and 3-2-1 in conference play. That leaves Whitman in fourth place, just behind a pair of teams tied for second with 4-2 league records. Meanwhile, Puget Sound held tight to first place with a 5-0-1 record.

Puget Sound outshot Whitman 23 to 10 and attempted eight corner kicks, but first-year keeper Erica Goad, appearing in just her third game for the Missionaries, was up to the test. Goad made 10 saves to earn her first college shutout.

Senior midfielder Jennifer Telfer led the Missionary offensive attack with four shots. Senior forward Mckenzie Hoffman took three shots, all of which were on goal.

“This was a great game to be a part of,” Whitman coach Scott Shields said. “It was very well played. Neither team deserved to lose.”

The Missionaries, after traveling to Spokane to play Whitworth at noon this Friday, host Lewis & Clark on Saturday. That game is also set for noon.

Friday, Oct. 7

Whitman 0, Whitworth 0

The cup remained half full and half empty Friday afternoon for the Whitman women's soccer team, which played its second consecutive Northwest Conference opponent to a 0-0 tie.

Friday's game in Spokane saw the Missionaries (5-3-2, 3-2-2) battle Whitworth to a scoreless standoff through 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of sudden-death overtime.

Erica Goad, Whitman's first-year keeper, made four saves in posting her second shutout in as many games. "Erica is two for two," Whitman coach Scott Shields. "She's been solid and doing everything right. She made a few game- saving stops today. She stopped one point-blank shot, and then came across the goal to punch away another shot."

The Pirates (3-4-2, 2-3-2) controlled much of the first half, outshooting Whitman 13-1. "They were all over us in the first half," Shields said. "We started slow but then turned things around a bit in the second half."

The Missionaries piled up a 9-5 advantage in second-half shots. Both teams took two shots in overtime. Whitman also had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. "We had three pretty good opportunities," Shields said. "Kristen Berndt, Mckenzie Hoffman and Jennifer Telfer all had good shots."

While Whitworth outshot the Missionaries 20-12 for the game, Whitman finished with five shots on goal, one more than the Pirates.

Whitman returns home to host Lewis & Clark at noon Saturday.

Saturday, Oct. 8

Whitman 4, Lewis & Clark 2

Goals by two veterans and two rookies powered the Whitman women's soccer team to a 4-2 Northwest Conference victory over Lewis & Clark Saturday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

The Missionaries, who had played to 0-0 overtime ties in their last two games, upped their record to 6-3-2 on the season and 4-2-2 in the NWC, good enough for sole possession of second place. Lewis & Clark, playing only its second year of varsity soccer, slipped to 3-5-2 and 2-4-1.

Senior Mckenzie Hoffman opened the scoring for Whitman in the 22nd minute of play, slamming home her third goal of the season. Sophomore Kristen Berndt, who assisted on the play, made it 2-0 Whitman when she hit her team-leading sixth goal of the season at the 26:15 mark. Sophomore Sammie Arthur assisted Berndt, who led the Missionaries in scoring a year ago.

The Pioneers kept it interesting, scoring off an indirect penalty kick inside the goalie box with 10 minutes left in the first half. Sophomore Katie Burnett got the goal, assisgted by first-year forward Stephanie Thurin.

Whitman regained its two-goal advantage just 2:25 into the second half. First- year forward Kristen Mittelsteadt notched her first goal, drilling a shot to the far post from 25 yards out. With nine minutes left to play, the Missionaries moved in front 4-1 when a second first-year forward, Jennifer Doane, nudged in her first college goal from point-blank range. Molly Gordon, a first-year midfielder, assisted on the play.

A few minutes later, Lewis & Clark's Thurin closed out the day's scoring with an assist from sophomore Marissa Ticus.

The victory keeps Whitman a perfect 4-0 on its home turf this fall. "Our main focus is to win all of our home games," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "You need to do that if you want to finish at the top of the conference standings."

The Missionaries controlled Saturday's game from the outset, outshooting Lewis & Clark 11-2 in the first half and finishing with a 27-4 advantage in shots for the game. Hoffman, Berndt and Arthur combined to take 15 of Whitman's shots. "I know they were getting a little frustrated," Shields said. "They had so many good looks and weren't able to finish as many as they'd like."

"The nice part of this game is that we played so well in the first half and then added the two insurance goals in the second half," Shields added. "That allowed us to get everyone in the game. It's a good reward to all the players who work their tails off all season. It's great to get them some game experience."

When Lewis & Clark scored its first goal late in the first half, it snapped a long scoreless stretch by Erica Goad, Whitman's first-year keeper. Goad, who was in goal for Whitman's 0-0 overtimes ties with Whitworth and Puget Sound, had not surrendered in goal in 272 minutes, 21 seconds.

Shields expects a tougher game from Lewis & Clark when the two teams meet later this season in Portland. "They are a much improved team," Shields said. "They've got some very solid first- and second-year players. We're going to have play much better when we play at their place."

Whitman, which is off Sunday, opens the second half of its conference season next weekend when it hosts Willamette and George Fox. Lewis & Clark plays Sunday at Whitworth.

Willamette 2, Whitman 1

Willamette scored late in each half to rally past Whitman 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Northwest Conference women's soccer action at the Whitman Athletic Fields. The Bearcats, who got the game-winning goal with nine minutes left to play, raised their record to 6-2-1 in conference and 8-4-1 overall. The home team dropped to 4-3-2 and 6-4-2.

"It was a very good game between two very good teams," Whitman coach Scott Shield said.

The Missionaries outshot Willamette by a slim 21-19 margin, although both squads were credited with eight shots on goal.

Whitman controlled much of the first half. Ten minutes into the contest, Whitman sophomore Kristen Berndt fired a bullet on goal that Willamette keeper Kari Woods snatched out of the air to keep the game scoreless. Midway through the half, Berndt hit the right post with another shot.

Whitman finally broke through with 5:32 left in the half. Berndt scooted down the left side and sent a cross toward the far post. Junior Sammie Arthur got her head on the ball and reversed its flight, sneaking the ball just inside the near post. It was her fourth goal in a season interrupted by an ankle injury.

"Now that Sammie is finally back to 100 percent, it's great to see get another goal," Shields said. "Berndt made a great effort to get her the ball, and Sammie did a good job changing its direction away from where their keeper was going."

Less than two minutes later, Willamette got the equalizer courtesy of a penalty kick directly in front of the Missionary goal. Whitman first-year keeper Erica Goad, who was part of a three-way collision in the right back side of the penalty box, was called for the foul. Willamette's Susan Butler made the penalty shot to send the game to halftime in a 1-1 deadlock.

"We were on the receiving end of a few questionable calls, and one of them led directly to Willamette's first goal," Shields said. "I didn't agree with that call, especially in that there wasn't anything obvious or flagrant involved. Our keeper, one of our defenders and one of their players all got to the ball at the same time and went down in a heap."

Early in the second half, Berndt nearly scored again, sending a shot skimming over the crossbar. Late in the half, at the 81:00 mark, Willamette junior Jessica Lammers set up on the left side and nailed a 35-yard shot to the far post to score what proved to be the game winner. "It was a great shot, but one of our defenders happened to screen our keeper from seeing the ball until it was too late," Shields said.

Woody, a junior, finished with seven saves in goal for Willamette. Goad made six saves.

In last month's first meeting between the two teams in Salem, Ore., Willamette scored three times in the first half en route to a 4-1 victory.

Whitman stays at home Sunday to host George Fox University. Willamette plays at Whitworth in Spokane. Both games start at noon.

Whitman 0, George Fox 0 (2ot)

The Whitman women's soccer team played 110 minutes and took 35 shots Sunday but had nothing to show for its efforts except a frustrating 0-0 overtime tie with George Fox at the Whitman Athletic Fields. The Missionaries have now played three of their last five games to scoreless ties.

Whitman ended the weekend at 6-4-3 on the season and 4-3-3 in Northwest Conference. George Fox is 1-8-1 against NWC opponents and 3-9-1 overall.

In shooting George Fox 35-11, the Missionaries racked up a 15-5 advantage in shots on goal. Goalie Jessica Cardwell kept the Bruins in the game, making 14 saves, including a game-saving dive to her left on a Kristen Berndt shot with six minutes remaining in the second overtime. "Their keeper played a fantastic game," Whitman coach Scott Shields said.

First-year Whitman goalie Erica Goad matched Cardwell's shutout, making five saves. It was Goad's third shutout of the season.

The Whitman women had several good scoring chances in the first half. Mckenzie Hoffman, who had a shot from inside the 18 saved by a diving Caldwell, also knocked another blast off the crossbar. Berndt put a shot from inside the 18 just out of Caldwell's reach and only inches outside of the right post.

In the second half, Betsy Neel got a good crack on a direct kick from 30 yards, but the shot hit the crossbar and ricocheted away. "We just couldn't find a goal today," Shields said. "We dominated the game all around."

The Bruins offense was led by Julie Alexander, who took six shots, three of them on goal. Whitman's attack was headed by Sammie Arthur's eight shots, four on net, and by Berndt, who also took eight shots, three on goal.

The Whitman women's soccer team finished off a season sweep of Pacific University on Saturday, handing the Boxers a 3-0 defeat in Forest Grove, Ore. The Missionaries improved to 5-3-3 in the Northwest Conference and 7-4-3 overall. The Boxers fell to 6-8-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the NWC.

The Boxers, who led the Missionaries for 75 of 90 minutes in their first game last month in Walla Walla, succumbed more easily this time, falling behind in the game's 12th minute on junior Sammie Arthur's fourth goal of the season. Arthur is Whitman's second-leading scorer this fall, trailing only sophomore Kristen Berndt, who set up Arthur's goal with a crossing pass from the left side. "It was a great cross," Whitman coach Scott Shields said.

The Missionaries tallied their second goal of the first half in the 36th minute, when senior Jennifer Telfer headed home senior McKenzie Hoffman's cross. Junior Megan McConville finished the scoring late in the second half when she buried a shot into the right side of the net. "That insurance goal really sealed the deal," Shields said.

Hoffman assisted on the game's final goal as well, earning her second assist of the game. Berndt and Hoffman are tied for second on the team with three assists, trailing senior Emily Marshall's four.

Freshman goalie Erica Goad made five saves to garner her second consecutive shutout and fourth overall. Boxers keeper Shannon Tillman kept the game from getting out of hand by making nine saves.

"Hopefully we can keep this momentum going tomorrow against Linfield," Shields said. The game starts at noon in McMinville, Ore.

Whitman 5, Linfield 0

The Whitman women's soccer team continued its winning ways Sunday afternoon, notching its second shutout victory of the weekend with a 5-0 victory at Linfield. The Missionaries improved to 8-4-3 overall and 6-3-3 in the Northwest Conference. The Wildcats are 3-8-1 in the NWC and 5-9-2 overall.

Four of Whitman's goals came in the first 34 minutes of play, beginning at the 13:34 mark with senior Mckenzie Hoffman's free kick from 23 yards. Junior Sammie Arthur continued the offensive onslaught, scoring the next two goals. Arthur's first score came midway through the first half off crosses from Hoffman and sophomore Kristen Berndt.

Arthur's second goal, which came at 29:21, was set up by Kristen Mittelsteadt's long ball that deflected off a defender. Arthur collected the ball and finished from eight yards out, boosting her season total to six goals.

The last of the four early goals came at 33:56 when Berndt had the ball on her feet and some space to maneuver in the penalty box. She turned and fired her shot inside the right post from 15 yards.

Berndt also scored the final Whitman goal, putting back a rebound in the 69th minute. The rebound came after junior Lindsey Wymer corralled Mittelsteadt's corner kick and fired a shot off the crossbar. It was Berndt's team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Annie Owen made eight saves for her second shutout of the season.

Puget Sound 1, Whitman 0

Visiting Puget Sound wrapped up its fourth consecutive Northwest Conference women’s soccer title with a 1-0 win at Whitman Saturday.

The Loggers improved to 12-0-1 in conference and 13-1-1 overall, while Whitman heads to Sunday’s action with records of 6-4-3 and 8-5-3. The Missionaries battled Puget Sound, ranked No. 9 nationally in the latest NCAA Div. III, to a 0-0 tie last month in Tacoma, Wash.

Saturday’s first half belonged to Puget Sound as the Loggers dominated possession. Whitman put a few shots on goal early in the contest but none that threatened Logger keeper Erin Williams and her streak of 12 consecutive shutouts. The game’s one and only goal came at the 21:32 mark when Elizabeth Pitman’s sailing corner kick found the charging Janece Levien, who headed it home.

“It was a fantastic goal,” Whitman coach Scott Shields said. “You hate to see your team get scored on, but sometimes when it’s a great goal there isn’t much that can be done about it.”

Whitman attacked early in the second half, nearly handing Puget Sound’s defense its first goal of the NWC season when Whitman sophomore Kristen Berndt bounced a shot off the left post. The rest of the half was a standoff, as neither team penetrated the other side’s tough interior defense. Each keeper made just one save in the second half.

Puget Sound took 19 shots on the day, although only four were on goal. Whitman finished with 14 shots, three on goal. The Loggers put five corner kicks into play, which was five more than the Missionaries managed.

"This was a great game,” Shields said. “Puget Sound is a great team and will do well in the national tournament, but we really showed today that we can play with them. I was very pleased with our effort.”

A brief half-time ceremony honored Whitman seniors Annie Owen, Kara Mackenzie, Hillary Chisholm, Jennifer Telfer, Mckenzie Hoffman, Emily Marshall and Lauren DeYoung, along with several family members.

Whitman 2, Pacific Lutheran 1 (OT)

The Whitman women's soccer team earned perhaps its most exciting win of the season Sunday, defeating Pacific Lutheran 2-1 in overtime at the Whitman Athletic Fields. With two conference games remaining, the Missionaries are 7-4-3 in Northwest Conference play and 9-5-3 overall. The loss drops Pacific Lutheran to 10-6-1 and 8-5-1.

The teams played an evenly matched first half, with Whitman taking eight shots and Pacific Lutheran seven. Whitman's first-year keeper Erica Goad made three saves before the intermission, and Alyssa Blackburn made four saves for the Lutes.to send the game into halftime scoreless.

The Lutes drew first blood in the game's 63rd minute, when Megan Shannon received Nicole Roeder's free-kick with her back to the goal, turned and fired a shot into the net.

But with less than 13 minutes left in regulation, senior McKenzie Hoffman responded for Whitman. After Kristen Berndt knocked a header into the box and drew Blackburn off her line, Hoffman got to the ball first and bounced her fourth goal of the season into the netting.

The overtime was short, sweet and all Missionaries. Just over two minutes into the period, senior Kara Mackenzie took a drop pass from Berndt and blasted a shot from well outside the box past into the net. It was Mackenzie's first goal of the season.

For the game, Whitman outshot the Lutes 21-16, which included a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal.

Earlier this season, in the first meeting between the two teams in Tacoma, Pacific Lutheran scored in the final five seconds of regulation to win 2-1.

Whitworth 3, Whitman 0

Playing its final home game of the season, the Whitman women’s soccer team succumbed to Whitworth 3-0 on a cold and rainy Friday night in Walla Walla. Earlier in the season, the two teams had played to a 0-0 tie in Spokane.

"They have a different style of play than any other team we see," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "They make you adjust."

Whitman controlled the first half of play, amassing 11 shots to six for Whitworth. Sophomore Kristen Berndt had a great chance 15 minutes into the match, but her shot from inside the box was deflected wide by Whitworth keeper Jenn Miller.

The Pirates seized the momentum with less than six minutes remaining until intermission when Ashley Fisk’s shot from 30 yards clipped the underside of the crossbar and bounced into the netting.

Whitworth added an insurance goal in the game's 64th minute when Whitney Ramsey headed a cross from the right side of the field into the left side of the goal. "That second goal really took the wind out our sails," Shields said.

Both teams took three shots on goal in the second half. Junior Sammie Arthur slipped a shot by the keeper midway through the second half, but the goal was disallowed on an offsides call.

Whitworth added its final goal with just two seconds remaining. Meghan Hudson corralled a corner kick and scored five yards out.

Miller made six saves to shut out the Missionaries for the second time this season. Ashley Troxel had two assists for the Pirates.

Whitman 3, Lewis & Clark 2

The Whitman women’s soccer team wrapped up its 2005 season on a high note with a 3-2 victory Saturday against Lewis & Clark in Portland, Ore. The Missionaries end the season with records of 8-5-3 in the Northwest Conference, good enough for fourth place, and 10-6-3 overall. The Pioneers finish at 5-9-2 and 7-10-3.

In the final NWC standings, Whitman finished just two points behind third-place Pacific Lutheran (9-5-2) and three points in back of second-place Willamette (9-4-3).

The Missionaries fell behind 1-0 in Saturday's first half after Alison Hudson netted a goal in the 32nd minute. Whitman quickly responded, however, when junior Sammie Arthur pounded in her seventh goal of the season, capitalizing on a Kristen Mittelsteadt corner kick that came with nine minutes left in the half.

Following intermission, the Pioneers re-captured the lead in the 64th minute on Sarah Kieffer's unassisted goal.

Whitman then turned on the jets one final time. Senior Mckenzie Hoffman sent a ball across the box that forced the Pioneer keeper to come off her line. Arthur converted the opportunity into her second goal of the game, bumping her season total to eight.

With just three minutes remaining, Whitman sophomore Kristen Berndt booted the game winner from 18 yards out. The goal was the ninth of the year for Berndt, making her the team leader in goals scored for the second time in her two seasons. Berndt also posted a team-high six assists during the 2005 campaign.

First-year Whitman keeper Erica Goad finished her season with a record of 5-1-3.
