Whitman's Munday Named NWC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- For the third time in three weeks, a Whitman College athlete has been named Northwest Conference Player of the Week for men's tennis.

This week's winner is Robbie Munday, a Whitman junior from Okanogan Falls, British Columbia. Two of his Missionary teammates, Steven Ly and Phalkun Mam, received the award in the two previous weeks.

Munday was one of two Whitman athletes honored when NWC Player of the Week awards were announced Monday night. Katie Collier, a junior on the Whitman women's squad, is Player of the Week for women's tennis.

Munday notched four victories in one day as the Missionaries swept a pair of 7-0 matches from Willamette on Saturday. He picked up a pair of straight-set victories in singles, playing at No. 1 and No. 2, and teamed with junior Dane Miller for wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. One of his victories in singles came by scores of 6-0, 6-0, and he and Miller scored an 8-0 triumph in one of the doubles matches.

With his two wins in the afternoon match, Munday surpassed the 100-victory plateau at Whitman. He ended the day with 101 career victories in singles and doubles. Mam joined Whitman's 100-win club during the morning match.

Munday earned All-NWC honors in each of his first two seasons at Whitman. He was named to the First Team as a freshman and to the Second Team as a sophomore.

Whitman is off to one of its best starts in years. The Missionaries are 10-0 in the NWC and 12-3 on the season.

Whitman is in California this week for a handful of Spring Break matches against nationally ranked teams. The Missionaries had their eight-match win streak snapped Monday in a 7-0 loss at defending national champion University of California-Santa Cruz. The Banana Slugs have lost just one match on their home courts in the past 20 years.
