WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Erin Pettersen, a Whitman College sophomore from Kirkland, Wash., has been named Northwest Conference women's Swimmer of the Week.
In Whitman's only competition last week, Pettersen paced the Missionary women to a 106-99 victory over Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash. The victory, Whitman's first over Whitworth since the 1988-89 season, elevated the Missionary women to 5-1 in dual meets this winter.
Against Whitworth, Pettersen won her only individual event, clocking a 1:01.66 in the 100-yard butterfly. She also shared in two relay victories, including a triumph in the meet-concluding 200-yard freestyle (1:44.21), which swung the final score in Whitman's favor. Other Missionaries in the clinching relay were sophomore Elizabeth Roberson and first-year swimmers Chelsea Durfey and Courtney Fitzpatrick.
Pettersen and three of her teammates -- senior Alexis Jinbo-Doran, junior Alexis Krupp and sophomore Nancy Alexander -- opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:56.22.
Pettersen, a graduate of Seattle's Lakeside School, holds the Whitman school record in the 200-yard butterfly. She ranks third all-time at Whitman in the 100-yard butterfly.
The Whitman men's and women's swim teams conclude their regular seasons by hosting a pair of NWC dual meets this weekend in the Sherwood Center pool. Puget Sound, a NWC swimming powerhouse, provides the opposition at 6 p.m. Friday. Pacific University visits Sherwood at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The NWC Swimming Championships are set for Feb. 10-12 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
