Whitman's Asiya Khaki Earns NWC Women's Tennis Honor

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Asiya Khaki, a Whitman College first-year player from Sammamish, Wash., has been named Northwest Conference Player of the Week for women's tennis.

Khaki, a graduate of Eastlake High School, led Whitman to three victories last week by winning all three of her matches at the top of the Missionary singles and doubles line-up. She won three times at No. 1 singles and joined with with junior teammate Emily Smith (Redmond, Ore.) for three victories at No. 1 doubles.

Whitman finished its regular season with records of 10-6 in the Northwest Conference and 10-12 overall. The Missionaries enter this weekend's NWC championship tournament as the No. 4 seed.

Khaki capped her perfect week by beating Willamette University's Tiffany Kam in a three-set thriller last Saturday in Whitman's Bratton Tennis Center. After losing the first set, Khaki bounced back to take the next two sets in tiebreakers. Two days earlier, she posted a three-set victory over Linh Aven at Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash.

Despite a mid-season ankle injury, Khaki finished the regular season with NWC records of 10-4 in singles and 7-1 in doubles.

Khaki is the second member of the Whitman women's tennis team to win NWC Player of the Week honors this season. Katie Collier, a junior from Issaquah, Wash., won the award last month.

This weekend's NWC championship tournament gets underway Friday at the Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club.
