WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Erin Pettersen, a Whitman College sophomore from Kirkland, Wash., has been named Northwest Conference women's Swimmer of the Week for a second consecutive week.
Pettersen's latest award comes after she enjoyed a perfect weekend in the pool last weekend in Sherwood Center. Competing in two dual meets, she won all three of her individual events and shared in three relay victories.
Friday night against NWC swimming powerhouse Puget Sound, Pettersen won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.52 and helped Whitman to victories in two relays -- the 200-yard medley (1:56.34) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.92). On Saturday against Pacific, she added individual victories in the 50-yard freestyle (26.07) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:17.30) and then closed out the meet by contributing to Whitman's victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:01.91).
That final relay victory against Pacific was also significant in that it helped Whitman close down the Sherwood pool on a winning note. The pool, in use since the building opened in 1969, will be replaced next winter by a new pool in the new Baker Ferguson Fitness Center.
Joining Pettersen, a graduate of Seattle's Lakeside School, in the final relay victory were sophomores Nancy Alexander and Ellen McCleery and first-year swimmer Tally Teal.
Whitman was also victorious in the final men's relay on Saturday. Sophomore Clint Collier teamed with freshmen Max Hennings, Chance Gray and Ysbrand Nusse to win the men's 400-yard freestyle in 3:48.39.
Whitman was a winner in both of Saturday's dual meets. The Missionary women won all 11 individual and relay events en route to a 162-37 triumph, while the men's team rolled to a 105-42 victory.
With their regular season concluded, the Whitman swim teams are prepping for the NWC Championships, set for Feb. 10-12 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
