Whitman Women's Tennis Team Wins NWC Honors

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Heidi Tate, coach of the Whitman College women's tennis team, and two of her players, Asiya Khaki and Katie Collier, have received post-season honors from the Northwest Conference.

In voting by NWC coaches, Khaki was named to the All-NWC Second Team, Collier was honored as NWC Sportswoman of the Year, and Tate was picked as NWC Coach of the Year for women's tennis. It is the second time in her six seasons that Tate has received the top coaching award.

Khaki, a graduate of Eastlake High School in Sammamish, Wash., played No. 1 singles in her first season of college tennis. Despite a mid-season ankle injury, she compiled a NWC record of 11-5 against the top players in the conference.

Collier, a Whitman junior who played at Issaquah (Wash.) High School, moved into the No. 2 singles spot this spring, compiling a 9-7 record against NWC opponents.

Members of the Whitman women's team have now won the NWC Sportswoman of the Year award in each of the past three seasons. Hannah Swee, an assistant coach on this year's team, won the award last spring to cap her senior season. Paola Vizcaino was the 2004 winner.

Tate wasn't surprised to see Collier win the lastet sportsmanship honor. "Katie is a player of integrity and strength," Tate said. "Other coaches in the conference recognize and appreciate her ability to compete hard but respect her opponents always. She loves the game of tennis and it shows in the way she carries herself and in the way she treats other teams."

Despite having lost four of her top players to gradution, Tate led the women's team this spring to a 10-6 regular season record and fourth-place finish in the NWC. The Whitman women placed fifth in the conference last spring.

Tate won her first NWC coaching honor during her second season at Whitman in 2002. Her team rolled through an undefeated NWC regular season that spring and then lost a 5-4 decision in the NWC championship match.
