2004-2005 Scores, Highlights

Friday, Oct. 1
NCAA Div. III
ITA Southwest Region Championships
University of Texas, Tyler

Unable to maintain the momentum of a strong opening round in singles, members of the Whitman women's tennis team were eliminated in Friday's next two rounds at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's NCAA Div. III Southwest Region Championships at the University of Texas-Tyler.

In doubles, however, Whitman seniors Hannah Swee and Jessica Antilla advanced into Saturday's Round of 16. Seeded No. 5 in the doubles bracket, Swee and Antilla followed up a first-round bye with an 8-2 second-round victory over Emily Frey and Sarah Koehler, representing Texas Lutheran University (Seguin, Texas).

Junior Marta Jankowska and sophomore Laurie Chapman also scored a Whitman victory in doubles, beating Priscilla Perez and Angelica Hernandez of Schreiner University (Kerrville, Texas) in an 8-0 first rounder. In round two, Jankowska and Chapman dropped lost by the same score to the No. 2 seeds, seniors Stephanie Haynes and Rebecca Watkinsn of Hardin-Simmons University (Abilene, Texas).

Senior Carissa Klarich and sophomore Katie Collier faced tough opponents in their first match, falling 8-4 to the No. 8 seeds, Angela Bryant and Jenny Growcock of Texas Lutheran.

The tournament features dozens of NCAA Div. III players from schools in the Northwest Conference, American Southwest Conference (ASC), and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). The competition continues through Sunday. The tournament's singles and doubles champions advance to the ITA's National Small College Championships in October.

Friday's singles play started on a promising note for Whitman. All five of the Missionaries who played first-round matches were victorious. Swee, one of the players seeded in a group from No. 9 through No. 16, had a first-round bye.

"This is the best we've ever done to start this tournament," Whitman coach Heidi Tate said. "We've never won all of our first-round matches before."

In the second round of singles, Swee posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Willamette's Alison Nunamaker. In the next round, Swee lost 6-2, 6-3 to Megan Nalley, a senior at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Belton, Texas).

Klarich and Antilla posted straight-set victories in winning their opening round matches in singles. Klarich was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Amy Somerford, a sophomore at Southwestern University (Georgetown, Texas). Antilla downed April Seydler, a sophomore at Texas Lutheran, 6-3, 6-3. Seydler was named last spring to the ASC West Division Second Team.

In round two, Klarich fell 6-0, 6-1 to the No. 2 seed, Megan Suarez, a senior at San Antonio's Trinity University. Antilla lost 6-1, 6-0 to Marie Williams of Howard Payne University (Brownwood, Texas). Williams is one of the players seeded in a group from No. 9 to No. 16.

In her singles opener, Marta Jankowska rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Schreiner's Emily Cox. She dropped her next match 6-2, 6-2 to Texas Lutheran's Angela Bryant, another of the players seeded from No. 9 through No. 16.

Chapman and Collier also netted opening-round victories over Texas opponents. Chapman cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Danyelle Pace, a senior at McMurry University (Abilene, Texas). Collier needed a third-set tie-breaker to win her match, edging Texas Lutheran freshman Alanna Gangemi 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5).

In the next round, both Chapman and Collier lost to players seeded in the No. 9 through No. 16 group. Chapman lost 6-1, 6-1 to McKenzie Swindle, a junior at Hardin-Simmons. Collier fell 6-1, 6-0 to Trinity senior Christy Austin.

Northwest Conference Championships

Round One: Friday, April 15
Willamette 7, Whitman 2
West Valley HS, Yakima, Wash.

A good start in doubles quickly turned sour in singles as the Whitman women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to Willamette in the first round of the Northwest Conference Championships Friday morning in the Yakima, Wash., area.

The Missionaries, who had edged Willamette 5-4 earlier this month in Salem, Ore., took an early 2-1 lead by winning two of three matches in doubles. But the Bearcats bounced back to sweep the six singles matches, winning three of them in three sets.

Whitman seniors Carissa Klarich and Hannah Swee staged an 8-6 victory in No. 1 doubles, while senior Jessica Antilla and junior Trish Hayward won 8-6 at No. 3.

The Missionaries missed a chance to win the match, however, when they lost three-set decisions at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles.

The loss drops fifth-seeded Whitman into the consolation bracket against Lewis & Clark, which fell 9-0 in the opening round to top-seeded and defending champion Linfield. The Whitman/Lewis & Clark match was scheduled to start at 4 p.m. today at the Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club's indoor courts, although that schedule was being revised due to afternoon rains in the Yakima area.

The rain forced tournament organizes to move two semifinal matches in the men's bracket (one involving Whitman) from the outdoor courts to the indoor courts at the tennis club. The Whitman women's team is scheduled to play its consolation bracket match against Lewis & Clark at 8 p.m. tonight.
