After defeating NCAA Div. I Eastern Washington University 7-0 earlier in the day, the Whitman men's tennis team followed up with a 7-0 Northwest Conference victory over Whitworth Friday afternoon in Spokane, Wash.
"Two matches, two wins and we didn't lose a set," Whitman coach Jeff Northam noted.
The most competitive match came at No. 1 doubles, where Whitman sophomores Steven Ly and Phalkun Mam needed an 11-9 tie-breaker to claim a 9-8 victory over Whitworth's Chad Dierickx and Ed Anegon.
Senior Brad Changstrom and sophomore Dane Miller rolled to an 8-2 Whitman victory at No. 2 doubles, but sophomore Robbie Munday and freshman Adam Chemerinsky faced a tougher challenge at No. 3, winning 8-6.
In singles, the Missionaries lost no more than four games in any one set.
Now 6-5 overall and 5-1 in NWC play, Whitman heads to Texas Saturday to play three Spring Break matches. The first match comes Sunday in San Antonio against Trinity University, which is ranked No. 9 nationally in NCAA Div. III. Whitman began the spring season ranked No. 17 nationally.
Friday's loss dropped Whitworth to 5-3 on the season and 4-2 in conference.

Trinity University showed its No. 9 national ranking is well deserved, handing the Whitman men's tennis team a 6-1 defeat Sunday afternoon in warm, humid conditions in San Antonio, Texas. A year ago, the Tigers knocked off Whitman 5-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Div. III playoffs.
Sunday's match, played with temperatures in the mid-80s, took an early turn in Trinity's favor when the Tigers won three close matches in doubles to claim the doubles point. Brad Changstrom, Whitman's only senior, teamed with sophomore Dane Miller at No. 2 doubles, where a Trinity duo prevailed 9-8. Sophomore Robbie Munday and freshman Adam Chemerinsky fell 9-7 at No. 3 doubles, while sophomores Steven Ly and Phalkum Mam lost 8-6 at No. 1.
"We had our chances in all three doubles matches," Whitman coach Jeff Northam said. "We could have won the doubles point."
Changstrom notched Whitman's only team point, winning the No. 6 singles match 6-3, 6-2. Mam came within a few points of winning at No. 3 singles, eventually falling by a 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (10-7) score.
"We didn't play poorly by any means," Northam said. "Trinity is an awfully good team. They are ranked No. 9 at the moment, but they could be a top four team."
Trinity has shown it might deserve a higher ranking by its two victories in the past few weeks over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS), which began the season with a No. 6 national ranking. Trinity has won the last 11 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference titles.
Now 6-6 on the season, Whitman battles CMS Monday afternoon in Austin, Texas. CMS is also visiting Texas as part of its Spring Break schedule. Whitman is the defending Northwest Conference champion, while CMS was a co-champion last year of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Apart from winning the No. 1 matches in singles and doubles, the Whitman men's tennis team had little luck with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a battle of nationally ranked teams Monday afternoon in Austin, Texas.
The Stags, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Div. III, won two of three matches matches in doubles and five of six in singles en route to a 6-1 victory. CMS upped its record to 10-8 on the season, dropping No. 17 Whitman to 6-7 overall.
Whitman sophomores Steven Ly and Phalkun Mam posted an 8-5 victory in the No. 1 doubles matches, downing CMS sophomores William Ellison and Evan Feldhausen. The Stags won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, however, to take the doubles point.
Ly completed a perfect day on the personal side, beating sophomore Eric Chow in three sets in the No. 1 singles match. Mam nearly followed suit at No. 4 singles, losing a third-set 7-6 tie-breaker to Feldhausen.
The Stags wrapped up the team scoring with straight-set victories in the remaining singles matches. Whitman concludes its Spring Break swing through Texas on Tuesday with a match against Hardin-Simmons in Georgetown, Texas.

A three-match Spring Break swing through Texas ended on a disappointing note Tuesday when the Whitman men's tennis team lost a trio of three-set matches in singles to drop a 4-3 decision to Hardin-Simmons University in Georgetown, Texas.
Hardin-Simmons, the defending champion of the American Southwest Conference, improved to 7-2 on the season. Whitman, which won the Northwest Conference title last season, is 6-8 overall in playing a tough schedule.
The Missionaries took the early lead Tuesday, winning two of three matches in doubles to claim the doubles points. Senior Brad Changstrom and sophomore Dane Miller were winners at No. 2 doubles, as were sophomore Robbie Munday and freshman Adam Chemerinsky at No. 3 doubles.
Whitman picked up two wins in singles. Munday at No. 4 and Changstrom at No. 6 each won in straight sets.
The match turned, however, on the trio of three-set matches in singles. Hardin-Simmons junior David Wu outlast Ly in the No. 1 singles. The Whitman men's tennis team was no match for nationally ranked Boise State Wednesday morning, falling 5-1 in the opening round of the Boise State Spring Classic.
With indoor court space at a premium and outdoor courts not playable due to rain, Whitman's match was halted after singles with Boise State holding an insurmountable lead. The doubles matches were not played.
Boise State, which is hosting the 16-team tournament, raised its season record to 19-6. The Broncos are ranked No. 31 nationally in NCAA Div. I. Whitman, ranked No. 17 in NCAA Div. III, is 6-9 on the season.
Originally scheduled for outdoors at Boise State's Appleton Tennis Center, the match was moved indoors to the nearby Boas Tennis & Soccer Complex.
Whitman scored its point at No. 6 singles, where senior captain Brad Changstrom posted a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Jon Bair, a 6-foot-5 sophomore from Hutchinson, Kansas.
Boise State's Thomas Schoeck, a 6-foot-2 junior from Rennigen, Germany, won the No. 1 singles match, beating Whitman sophomore Steven Ly in 6-2, 6-0. Matias Silva, a 6-foot-3 senior from Lima, Peru, downed Missionary sophomore 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

The Missionaries, representing the only NCAA Div. III school in the 16-team tournament field, swept the three doubles matches against Montana State-Billings and then didn't lose a set in running the table in six singles matches.

In No. 1 singles, Whitman sophomore Steven Ly rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Montana State's Paco Sanchez, a sophomore from Las Palmas, Spain. Dane Miller, another Missionary sophomore, was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Sergio Diaz, a junior from Lima, Peru.
Because of rain, the match was played indoors at Boise's Crane Creek Country Club.

In its first two matches, Marquette lost 4-2 to the University of Nebraska and slipped past Northern Arizona University 4-1. The Golden Eagles are 9-9 on the season.
If Whitman beats Marquette, the Missionaries plays for ninth place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Boise State courts. If the Missionaries lose to Marquette, Whitman plays for 11th place at 1 p.m. Saturday. That match will be played at the Boise Racquet & Swim Club.

Marquette, upping its record to 10-9, swept the doubles matches but then ran into stiff competition from the Missionaries in singles. Whitman sophomore Steven Ly knocked off Eigis Vedrickas, a sophomore from Vilnuis, Lithuania, in three sets in the No. 1 match to notch the only Missionary team point of the day. Four of the remaining five matches in singles, however, were decided in three sets.

Beating an old rival in Lewis-Clark State, the Whitman men's tennis team claimed 11th place Saturday morning in the 16-team Boise State Spring Break Classic in Boise, Idaho.
The Missionaries won four of his matches in singles to down LCSC 4-2. With the outcome already decided, the doubles matches were not played.
Whitman finished with a 2-2 record in the tournament, which was hosted b Boise State and featured mostly NCAA Div. I schools. LCSC, a longtime NAIA Div. I tennis powerhouse, was 1-3 in the tourney, also losing to Wichita State and Cal Poly SLO but beating Bradley.
Whitman, the only NCAA Div. III team in the tournament, edged LCSC by winning the bottom four matches in singles. The victory gave the Missionaries a bit of revenge for a narrow 4-3 loss to the Warriors earlier this season.
Whitman sophomore Robbie Munday dominated LCSC's Dimitri Verbyou, a junior from Vitebsk, Belarus, at No. 3 singles. Phalkun Mam, also a Missionary sophomore, was an easy winner at No. 4 singles, beating Ali Faris Mohamed, a freshman from Males, The Maldives.
The Missionaries also got straight-set wins from freshman Adam Chemerinsky at No. 5 and senior Brad Changstrom at No. 6.

The doubles point proved decisive as Linfield squeaked past Whitman 4-3 in Northwest Conference men's tennis action Thursday night in the Bratton Tennis Center.
The Wildcats, now 6-10 overall and 7-2 in NWC play, took the early 1-0 lead by winning two of three matches in doubles. Senior Tim Layman and junior Jack Fleming claimed a close 8-6 decision over Missionary sophomores Steven Ly and Phalkun Mam in the No. 1 doubles match. Whitman senior Brad Changstrom teamed with sophomore Dane Miller for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles.
The two sides then split the six singles matches, Linfield winning the top three while Whitman was prevailing in the bottom three. Mam at No. 4, freshman Adam Chemerinsky at No. 5, and Changstrom at No. 6 all won in straight sets. Changstrom upped his season mark in singles to 13-5.
Linfield's Erik Janssen, a junior from Molenhoek, Holland, outlated Missionary sophomore Robbie Munday in three tough sets at No. 3 singles.

The Missionaries improved to 7-2 in conference play, dropping the Loggers to 4-6. The match marked the second time this season that Whitman shut out Puget Sound.
After sweeping the three doubles matches, Whitman picked off each of the six singles matches in straight sets, losing no more than four games in any one set.
Brad Changstrom, the only senior in Whitman's line-up, was a winner at No. 6 singles, running his season record to 15-5 overall and 6-1 in conference.
The Missionaries play their final regular season match Saturday at Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma. The Lutes, a perfect 10-0 this season against NWC opponents, beat Whitman 6-1 earlier this season. The Missionaries got off to a strong start in that match, taking the doubles point by winning all three doubles matches. But PLU countered by sweeping all six matches in singles, winning four of them in three sets.

In a battle of two of the top men's tennis teams in the Northwest Conference, Pacific Lutheran outlasted Whitman 4-3 Saturday morning in Tacoma, Wash.
The Lutes took the early 1-0 lead, claiming the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. The top two matches were close, however. The Whitman men's tennis team opened defense of its Northwest Conference title by rolling to a 7-0 victory over Lewis & Clark as the NWC Tennis Championships got underway with first-round action Monday morning in the Yakima, Wash., area.
The Missionaries, seeded No. 3 in the tournament, advance to play No. 2 Linfield at 2 p.m. today at the Yakima Tennis Club. Linfield edged Whitman 4-3 in late March in the only previous meeting of the two teams this season.
In its opening round match this morning, Linfield cruised to a 7-0 victory over Willamette. Meanwhile, top-seeded Pacific Lutheran had no difficulty with its first-round match, posting a 7-0 triumph over George Fox. Pacific Lutheran advances this afternoon to a second-round match against Whitworth, which eased past Puget Sound 5-2 in its opener.
In getting off to a good start in doubles against Lewis & Clark, Whitman won two of three matches without losing a game. Sophomores Steven Ly and Phalkun Mam pitched a shutout at No. 1 doubles, as did sophomore Robbie Munday and freshman Adam Chemerinsky at No. 3. Senior captain Brad Changstrom teamed with sophomore Dane Miller for an 8-2 victory in the No. 2 doubles match.
In singles, Ly upped his season record to 13-7 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Lewis & Clark senior Zach Mann in the No. 1 match. Changstrom improved his singles mark to 15-6 with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5.
Munday didn't lose a game in cruising to victory at No. 2 singles. Freshman Robert Edles-Rye, playing at No. 6, also fashioned a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Chemerinsky won in straight sets at No. 4.
Mam was the winner at No. 3 singles for Whitman. In his two seasons, Mam is now 18-1 against NWC opponents.
Whitman's first-round match was played at Selah (Wash.) High School. Most matches are taking place at the Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club, the tournament headquarters.

The Whitman men's tennis team earned the right to defend its Northwest Conference title Friday afternoon, knocking off a tough Linfield squad 4-3 in the semifinals of the NWC Championships at the Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club.
Whitman, which entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed, now faces top-seeded Pacific Lutheran in Saturday's title match. With rain wreaking havoc with the tournament schedule, the latest information has the match starting at 2 p.m. on the club's indoor courts.
Pacific Lutheran, which has yet to lose in conference play this season, rolled to an easy 5-0 victory Friday afternoon in its semifinal match with Whitworth, the No. 4 seed.
In the NWC championship match a year ago, Whitman captured its first title since the 2000 season with a 5-2 victory over Pacific Lutheran. During the regular season this spring, however, the Lutes downed Whitman in a pair of closely contested matches.
Linfield entered this weekend's tournament as the No. 2 seed, based on a 4-3 victory over Whitman earlier this month in the only meeting between the two teams this season. In this afternoon's rematch, Whitman turned the tables by taking two of three matches in doubles to win the doubles point. With that point in hand, the Missionaries won three of six matches in singles to emerge with their 4-3 victory.
As happened during the regular season battle, Linfield won at No. 1 doubles in Friday's semifinal while Whitman senior Brad Changstrom and sophomore Dane Miller were winning at No. 2. The difference came at No. 3 doubles, where Whitman sophomore Robbie Munday and freshman Adam Chemerinsky outlasted Linfield's Brian Mullin and John Yates by a 9-7 margin. Mullin and Yates had downed Munday and Chemerinsky 8-3 earlier in the season.

The Whitman men's tennis team came within a single team point of defending its Northwest Conference title Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 to Pacific Lutheran in the championship match at the Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club.
The Lutes, who have yet to lose this season to an NWC opponent, took the early lead, winning two of three matches in doubles to claim the doubles point. That proved to be decisive when the two squads split the six singles matches.
"It was a very long, tense match," Whitman coach Jeff Northam said. "PLU has had a great season and is ranked No. 9 in the nation, but we had them on the ropes today. Our guys played well and fought so hard."
Whitman traveled a much tougher road to Saturday's title match, beating a tough Linfield squad 4-3 in one of Friday's semifinals. PLU scored a quick 5-0 victory over Whitworth in its semifinal.
"Our guys played two great matches, back to back against Linfield and PLU," Northam said. "I couldn't be more proud of the way we competed."
In Friday's title match, Whitman scored its only doubles victory at No. 3, where sophomore Robbie Munday and freshman Adam Chemerinsky won 8-3.
In singles, Munday won in straight sets in the No. 3 match, while Chemerinsky rallied for a three-set triumph at No. 5. Sophomore Phalkun Mam won at No. 4 singles, extending his two-season record against NWC foes to 20-1.
Sophomore Steven Ly, who played most of the season at No. 1 singles for Whitman, was named to the All-NWC First Team for a second straight season. Miller, Munday and Phalkun were named to the second team. Senior captain Brad Changstrom was named NWC Sportsmen of the Year.
A year ago, Whitman won its NWC title by downing Pacific Lutheran 5-2.
