With freshman Kristen Berndt booting a hat trick and junior Jennifer Telfer shaking off two injury-plagued seasons to score two goals, the Whitman College women’s soccer team opened its 2004 campaign with an overwhelming 8-0 victory over Albertson College Wednesday evening at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Whitman took immediate control of the game, scoring 43 seconds after the opening horn. Telfer, limited to just seven games last year, tallied the first Missionary goal of the new season, heading in a centering pass from junior Mckenzie Hoffman. Twenty minutes later, Telfer scored again, this time courtesy of a crossing pass from senior Katie Schmitz.
Jennifer Toy, a junior, gave Whitman a 3-0 lead with an unassisted goal at the 36:55 mark of the first half.
The next 10 minutes belonged to Berndt, a freshman from North Bend, Wash. The first of her goals, assisted by sophomore Sammie Arthur, came with 38:42 showing on the first-half clock. She scored again four minutes later, assisted by junior Emily Marshall, to extend Whitman’s lead to 5-0 at the halftime break.
Berndt scored her third goal 62 seconds into the second half, with the assists going to Toy and sophomore Betsy Neel. Berndt finished her first collegiate goal with eight shots, five of them goal.
Arthur, who led Whitman in scoring last season as a freshman, picked up her second assist of the game at the 51:50 mark, feeding Marshall for a goal and 7-0 Missionary lead. Lauren DeYoung, a junior, wrapped up the scoring with just under five minutes left in the game. Junior Kara Mackenzie got the assist.
Whitman outshot Albertson 22-1 in the first half and finished with a 34-5 advantage in shots for the game. All five of Albertson’s shots were on goal and saved by Whitman’s junior goalkeeper Anne Owen.

The Whitman College women's soccer team used two first-half goals to defeat the University of Redlands, the host team, 2-0 as the Bulldog-Athena Classic got underway Saturday in Redlands, Calif. Whitman raised its record 2-0 while Redlands was playing its first game of the season.
Whitman opened the scoring in the 28th minute when sophomore Sammie Arthur, last year's leading scorer, richoeted a shot off the opposing goalkeeper and into the net. Senior Katie Schmitz had the assist, her second of the season.
Junior Emily Marshall bounced a direct kick past the Redlands keeper at the 36:00 mark to give Whitman a 2-0 lead. It was Marshall's second goal of the season.
Whitman controlled the game, outshooting Redlands 11-4 and committing only three fouls, six less than the host team. Whitman's junior goalkeeper, Anne Owens, posted her second shutout in as many games.
The Missionaries play their second game of the tournament at 10 a.m. Sunday, squaring off with Chapman University.
Chapman 2, Whitman 0
Chapman University, ranked No. 18 nationally in an NCAA Div. III preseason poll, scored a pair of first-half goals and held off the Whitman College women’s soccer team in the second half for a 2-0 victory Sunday at the Bulldog-Athena Classic in Redlands, Calif.
The Panthers, who have qualified for the NCAA post-season in each of the past five seasons, are 2-0 on the young season. Whitman suffered its first loss, falling to 2-1.
“We came out flat and Chapman stepped it up a level during the first half,” Whitman coach Scott Shields said. “We had a number of chance in the second half but we didn’t capitalize on them. I was happy with the way we played that second half. Now we have a week to work on some things and get ready for our next game.”
Whitman travels to Whitworth College in Spokane next Sunday, Sept. 12, to play Claremont-Mudd Scripps College, a team from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference. That will be Whitman’s final non-conference game before it opens Northwest Conference play with a Wednesday, Sept. 15, home game against Whitworth.
Whitman 1, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 0
Look for the Whitman women’s soccer team to climb higher in the NCAA Div. III regional rankings, after the Missionaries pinned a 1-0 defeat on Claremont Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Sunday afternoon in Spokane, Wash.
Whitman, now 3-1 on the season, was ranked No. 6 in last week’s West Region poll, two spots behind CMS. The loss dropped the Athenas to 4-1 overall. On Friday, CMS posted a 3-1 victory over Whitworth, which was ranked No. 5 last week.
In Sunday’s game, first-year forward Kristen Berndt scored the only goal early in the second half, assisted by junior Jennifer Telfer. Berndt had just come into the game as a substitute. “It’s nice that we have people come in off the bench and respond with good play,” Whitman coach Scott Shield said.
The goal was Berndt’s fourth of the season. Her first three goals came as a hat trick in a season-opening victory over Albertson College.
Anne Owen, Whitman’s junior goalkeeper, picked up her third shutout in four games this season. Owen made three saves as the Missionaries outshot CMS 19-12. “The defense stepped up again today,” Shields said. “I can’t say enough about Anne and the way she is playing this season.”
Whitman begins Northwest Conference play this week when they host Whitworth at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Whitman Athletic Fields. “Winning in non-conference is great, but now the season starts,” Shields said. “This is a big game on Wednesday.”
Whitworth 3, Whitman 1
The Whitman women’s soccer team lost its Northwest Conference opener to eastern Washington rival Whitworth by a 3-1 margin Wednesday night at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Whitman, ranked No. 24 nationally and No. 4 in the west region, drops to 3-2 on the season. Whitworth, ranked No. 9 regionally, improves to 2-2 on the season.
The Missionaries took the early lead, scoring midway through the fifth minute of play. Junior Lauren DeYoung took a pass from Mckenzie Hoffman, also a junior, and scored from five yards out. It was the second goal of the season for DeYoung, and the second assist for Hoffman.
The lead didn’t last long, however. It was just three minutes later, in fact, that Whitworth junior Marissa Williams booted her second goal of the young season, lofting a high, arching shot to the far post to even the score at 1-1.
Less than two minutes later, the Pirates added to their momentum, and took the lead for good, when sophomore Jael Hagerott rifled home a free kick from 20 yards out.
Both sides failed to capitalize on a number of scoring opportunites as the game continued. Hagerott, last year’s NWC Offensive Player of the Year, added an insurance goal for the Pirates with less than 12 minutes left in the second half. Hagerott has three goals and three assists in Whitworth's first four games.
Whitman outshot Whitworth 21-18 in the game, although both teams had eight shots on goal. Whitworth keeper Jenn Miller, a junior, made seven saves. Whitman keeper Annie Owen, also a junior, had fives saves.
Whitman continues NWC play this weekend, hosting Pacific on Saturday and George Fox on Sunday. Both game start at noon. Whitworth hosts the same two schools, in reverse order.
Whitman 3, Pacific 1
The Whitman women’s soccer team evened its Northwest Conference record at 1-1 with a 3-1 victory over Pacific Saturday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields. The Missionaries improved to 4-2 on the season, while the Boxers dropped to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Whitman took the early lead when junior Jennifer Telfer, assisted by junior Mckenzie Hoffman and senior Kim Boese, hit the back of the net in the 21st minute of play. It was Telfer’s third goal of the season.
The rest of the first half remained scoreless as goalkeepers Annie Owen (Whitman) and Shannon Tillman (Pacific) fended off multiple shots. Early in the second half, with both teams fighting to control tempo, Pacific struck first, tying the game in the 53rd minute when sophomore Laura Hill knocked in freshman Kaleig Stubblefield’s corner kick. It was Hill’s fourth goal of the season.
Whitman responded with more pressure on Pacific’s defensive line until a foul was called in the penalty box. Sophomore Sammie Arthur made the penalty kick look easy, guiding ball into the bottom right corner of the net to give Whitman a 2-1 lead. Telfer and senior Katey Schmitz were credited with assists for passes that set up the scoring opportunity.
The Missionaries and Boxers continued to mix it up, with injuries stopping play on a few occasions. With only 10 minutes left in the game, Schmitz took a pass from Telfer, dribbled up the field and fed the ball to freshmen Kristen Berndt, who booted her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Whitman outshot the Boxers 17-5 for the game, which included an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. Tillman made five saves for Pacific, while Owen had three for Whitman.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better game today,” Whitman coach Scott Shields said. “We knew we had a tough match-up against Pacific coming into the game, and it was great to come out with a win. It gives us lots of momentum going into tomorrow’s game against George Fox.”
Whitman improves their record to 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. Conference action continues tomorrow at noon as Whitman hosts George Fox. Pacific plays Whitworth in Spokane.
Whitman 3, George Fox 1
The Whitman women's soccer team rallied for a 3-1 Northwest Conference victory over George Fox Sunday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields. The Missionaries boosted their record to 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in conference. George Fox fell to 3-4 overall and and 0-3 in the NWC.
In a game that saw the two teams take over 40 shots, 33 by Whitman, it was George Fox that scored first. The Bruins led 1-0 after Mackenzie Welch headed home a pass from Amber Stevens at 33:14 mark.
Despite outshooting George Fox 16-4 in the first half, Whitman still trailed the visitors 1-0 at intermission. "Their goalkeeper (Jessica Cardwell) was good; she saved them a couple of times in the first half when it looked like we were going to get an easy goal," Whitman coach Scott Shields said.
The second half belonged entirely to the Missionaries, who outshot the Bruins 17-4 and scored three times. "The second half was a little better," Shields said. "I told the team that we'd get that first goal and then the second one would come easier, and that's what happened."
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Whitman junior Mckenzie Hoffman scored her first goal of the season on a header from just outside the goal. Erin Frame and Katey Schmitz were credited with the assist.
Seven minutes later, junior Jennifer Telfer hit a shot from ten yards out to put Whitman up for good. It was Telfer's fourth goal of the season, with the assist going to Hoffman and junior Lauren DeYoung.
Schmitz, a Whitman senior, clinched the game with her first goal of the season with less than six minutes left to play. Taking a pass from Hoffman, Schmitz scored one-on-one play against the George Fox goalie. "It was nice to see Katie get a goal and break her scoreless streak," Shields said. Schmitz has a total of 16 goals in her three-plus seasons at Whitman.
Whitman 1, Willamette 1 (20T)
Battling through 30 minutes of overtime, the Whitman women’s soccer team finally settled for a 1-1 tie with Willamette, the nation's 18th-ranked NCAA Div. III team, in a game played Saturday in Salem, Ore.
With the tie, Whitman now has a record of 2-1-1 in the Northwest Conference and 5-2-1 overall. Williamette is 3-2-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in NWC play.
All of Saturday's scoring came early. The Bearcats struck first, scoring in the 11th minute when Susan Butler converted a pass from teammate Brenna Hindman. Three minutes later, Whitman sophomore Erin Frame set up junior Lauren DeYoung for the game-tying goal. It was DeYoung's third goal of the season.
The game was evenly contested throughout. Willamette outshot Whitman 8-5 in shots on goal, although both teams took four corner kicks. Goalies Kari Woody (Willamette) and Annie Owen (Whitman) each had one save apiece in the contest.
After the early goals, neither team scored in regulation, or the two 15-minute overtime sessions. Willamette generated just two shots on goal in overtime, one more than Whitman.
“It was an awesome game to watch,” Whitman coach Scott Shields said. “To tie Willamette on its home field is a great accomplishment for us. This is the first time we’ve done it in my entire career here.”
The Bearcats continue NWC play at noon Sunday against Whitworth, while Whitman plays at the same time at Linfield in McMinnville, Ore.
Whitman 3, Linfield 1
The Whitman women’s soccer team moved into third place in the Northwest Conference standings with a 3-1 victory at Linfield Sunday afternoon in McMinnville, Ore. With all three of its NWC victories coming by a 3-1 margin, Whitman upped its conference record to 3-1-1 and its season mark to 6-2-1. Linfield fell to 0-7-1 in conference and 0-4 overall.
Linfield tallied Sunday's first goal when Ashley Covey converted a corner kick by Erica Crossman in the 18th minute of play. Whitman struck back with 39:34 showing on the first half clock when sophomore Besty Neel booted her first goal of the season. The goal was unassisted.

McKenzie Hoffman, also a junior, sealed the victory for Whitman with an unassisted goal in the 87th minute. Hoffman has two goals and five assists on the season.
The Missionaries outshot the Wildcats 20-9, which included an 11-3 margin in the second half. Whitman keeper Annie Owen was credited with fives saves, Cartmill came away with seven for Linfield.
"It was a great game for us and I’m really proud of our team,” Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "“We played without junior Hillary Chisholm, who was injured all week, but everyone else was able to step it up for us.”
Whitman hosts Pacific Lutheran next Saturday and Puget Sound on Sunday. Both games start at noon at the Whitman Athletic Fields. Pacific Lutheran (2-1-1) is in fourth place, while Puget Sound (4-0) sits all alone in second.
Whitman 3, Pacific Lutheran 1
The Whitman women’s soccer team solidified its hold on third place in Northwest Conference with a 3-1 victory over Pacific Lutheran Saturday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields. Now 4-1-1 in the NWC and 7-2-1 on the season, the Missionaries dropped the Lutes to 2-2-1 in the conference standings and to 2-4-1 overall.
After losing its NWC opener 3-1 in mid-September, Whitman has reeled off four wins and a tie in its last five conference games. Oddly enough, all four Whitman victories have come by the same 3-1 score.
Whitman took charge early in Saturday’s game, rolling to a 2-0 lead in the first 36 minutes of play.
Sophomore Sammie Arthur struck first for the Missionaries at the 20:02 mark of the first half, putting a strong leg into a 15-yard shot from the right side. It was Arthur’s third goal of the season, with senior Katey Schmitz setting the stage with her fifth assist.

With less than seven minutes left in the first half, Pacific Lutheran pulled to within 2-1 on sophomore Stefka Kling’s unassisted goal, her first of the season.
As Whitman continued to pressure the PLU defense after intermission, junior defender Hillary Chisholm gave the home team some breathing room with an unassisted goal with 54:12 showing on the second half clock. Chisholm’s goal, her first of the season, came on a high chip from 40 yards out.
Eight Missionaries had at least one shot on goal as Whitman generated a 9-4 edge in that statistical category. Annie Owen, Whitman’s junior keeper, had three saves. Owen has allowed just five goals in her last five games.
Whitman continues its NWC season when it hosts Puget Sound at noon Sunday on the Whitman Athletic Fields. Puget Sound, which began the weekend with a No. 1 natioinal ranking, suffered its first NWC loss of the season this afternoon in Spokane, losing 2-1 to Whitworth.
Puget Sound 5, Whitman 0
The Whitman women’s soccer team suffered only its second Northwest Conference loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling 5-0 to top-ranked Puget Sound at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
The Loggers, who began the weekend with a No. 1 national ranking in the NCAA Div. III ranks, suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, dropping a 2-1 decision to Whitworth in Spokane. That loss seemed to give Puget Sound plenty of motivation to get back on the winning track at Whitman’s expense.
Whitman, which downed Pacific Lutheran 3-1 on Saturday, entered Sunday’s game with a season-long 95-49 advantage over its opponents in terms of shots on goal. The Loggers turned the tables, outshooting Whitman 17-6, which included a 10-2 edge in shots on goal.
Cortney Kjar, Puget Sound’s junior scoring leader, triggered the Logger offense in the 23rd minute, hitting an unassisted goal from 15 yards out. Kjar added her eighth goal of the season in the 37th minute, scoring unassisted off a steal.
Up 2-0 at halftime, Puget Sound wasted little time in putting the game out of reach in the second half. The Loggers blitzed the Missionary defense for three goals in the first six minutes of the second stanza. After Jessica Fritz scored her first goal of the season, Adrienne Folsom booted her fifth goal of the fall and Tera Anderson added her sixth to complete the scoring.
The loss drops Whitman to 7-3-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the Northwest Conference. Puget Sound upped its record to 8-1 on the season and 5-1 in the conference.
Whitman plays just one game this week, traveling to Portland, Ore., on Sunday, Oct. 10 to play Lewis & Clark College.
Whitman 1, Lewis & Clark 0
The Whitman women’s soccer team remains in third place in the Northwest Conference standings after a 1-0 victory at Lewis & Clark Sunday afternoon in Portland, Ore.
Now halfway through its NWC season, Whitman is 5-2-1 in the conference play, its best midpoint record in more than a decade. The Missionaries were 4-2-1 at the halfway point in 1996, when the conference included one less team.
Women’s soccer in the NWC grew to nine schools this fall when Lewis & Clark started its program. The Pioneers are now 2-8-1 on the season, but 0-8 in conference play.
Sunday's victory boosts Whitman's season record to 8-3-1. Playing for the first time this season on artificial turf, the Missionaries managed just one goal but outshot the Pioneers 29 to 11. Whitman had 13 shots on goal, seven more than the host team.
The only scoring play of the game came with less than three minutes left in the first half. First-year forward Kristen Berndt, coming off the bench, blasted a ball into the upper right corner of the net. It was Berndt’s team-leading seventh goal of the season. Senior Katey Schmitz got the assist, her sixth of the year, which leads the Missionaries in that statistical category.
Whitman keeper Annie Owen, a junior, made six saves in posting her fourth shutout of the season.
“It was a great win for us today,” Whitman coach Scott Shields said. “It’s always a little nerve-racking traveling to a new program and playing on an artificial surface you’re not used to, but the team settled in after a few minutes. I was really happy with the team’s performance, and we’re looking forward to traveling to Spokane to play Whitworth.”
Whitworth, in first place with an 8-0 NWC record, hosts Whitman at 2 p.m. Wednesday. In the first meeting between the two schools last month in Walla Walla, Whitworth led 2-1 at halftime and added a late goal for a 3-1 victory.
Whitworth was ranked No. 6 last week in the NCAA Div. III national coaches poll.
Whitworth 3, Whitman 0
The Whitman women's soccer team was shut out Wednesday for only the third time this season, falling 3-0 to league-leading Whitworth in Spokane. The Pirates remain undefeated in Northwest Conference play, moving to 9-0 and 11-2 on the season. Third-place Whitman heads to the weekend with a 5-3-1 record in the NWC, tied for third place with Willamette, and an 8-4-1 mark overall.
Mary Hultgrenn, a Whitworth senior, did all the scoring for the Pirates, scoring one goal in the eighth minute of play and then booting two more in the second half. Sophomore Jael Hagerott had the assist on all three scores.
Whitman's best chance for a goal came in the second half when junior Emily Marshall headed a corner kick that was saved by Pirate keeper Jenn Miller. Senior Katey Schmitz had a chance to put back the loose ball, but her shot from was knocked away by Pirate defender Ashli Anderson.
Whitworth outshot Whitman 29-8, including a 12-5 edge in shots on goal. Owen made eight saves for the Missionaries, while Miller made four saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season.

With Annie Owen posting her fifth shutout of the season, the Whitman women's soccer team notched a 3-0 Northwest Conference victory at George Fox Saturday afternoon in Newberg, Oregon.

George Fox, which lost a 3-1 decision to Whitman earlier in the season in Walla Walla, is now 3-7 in conference and 6-8 overall.
Owen had a spectacular game in goal for the Missionaries, making eight saves in recording her 10th career shutout. She stopped two point-blank shots in the first half to keep the game scoreless at the halftime break.
"Annie had possibly the best game of her career today," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "She was absolutely fantastic."
The first goal of the game didn't come until the 66th minute when Whitman sophomore Sammie Arthur was pulled down in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Junior Kara Mackenzie converted the PK to give Whitman the 1-0 lead. It was Mackenzie's first goal of the season.
Twenty minutes later, the Missionaries made it 2-0 when sophomore midfielder Betsy Neel booted her second goal of the season, scoring off an assist by first-year forward Kristen Berndt.

Whitman returns to NWC action at noon Sunday against Pacific in Forest Grove.
Pacific University converted a penalty kick with less than two minutes to play to hand the Whitman women's soccer team a 1-0 Northwest Conference defeat Sunday afternoon in Forest Grove, Ore.
The hard-luck loss drops the Missionaries to 9-5-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the NWC, while Pacific raised its record to 3-6-2 on conference and 4-7-2 on the season.
Pacific's Kalei Titcomb made the penalty kick, chipping the ball to the left corner post past. The Boxers were awarded the shot after Laura Hill was tripped in the penalty area.
Meanwhile, the Missionaries failed to finish anhy of their scoring chances. "We had plenty of shots on goal," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "We just couldn't capitalize."
Pacific outshot the Missionaries 10-9 in the match. Pacific goalie Shannon Tillman made five saves for her third shutout of the season. Whitman keeper Annie Owen, who has five shutouts on the season, had six saves in the loss.
"Today's game was a very hard-fought battle," Shields said. "We just didn't get the lucky break in the end like Pacific did."
Whitman continues NWC play next weekend, hosting Linfield on Saturday and Willamette on Sunday. Both games start at noon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Failing to capitalize on a handful of point-blank scoring opportunities, the Whitman women’s soccer team lost 3-1 to Linfield Saturday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields. The loss drops Whitman to 9-6-1 on the season and 6-5-1 in Northwest Conference play. Linfield snapped a four-game losing streak, upping its record to 3-9 in the NWC and 3-11-1 overall.
With Whitman storming the Linfield goal to start the game, Whitman junior Kara Mackenzie opened the scoring with just 3:48 expired off the clock. Cartmill held the line thereafter, finishing the first half with five big saves. Meanwhile, the Wildcats pulled even at 1-1 when junior Ashley Covey scored in the 23rd minute of play, assisted by sophomore Chelsey Stoltz.
Covey struck again with less than six minutes to play in the first half, giving Linfield the lead for good. Coming off senior Erica Crossman’s corner kick, it was Covey’s fifth goal of the season.

The Whitman College women’s soccer team celebrated a big win Sunday, downing Willamette 3-1 to slip past the Bearcats into fourth place in the Northwest Conference standings. The home field victory also marked the first time Whitman has beaten Willamette in the 11-season tenure of Missionary coach Scott Shields.
Whitman nearly broke its long losing streak against Willamette earlier this season. In a game played in late September in Salem, Ore., the two sides battled to a 1-1 tie in double overtime.
Now 7-5-1 in the NWC, Whitman trails third-place Pacific Lutheran by a half-game in the standings. Willamette, long one of the strongest women’s soccer programs in the conference, saw its NWC record fall to 6-5-1.
Seniors Kim Boese and Katey Schmitz both had strong performances for the Missionaries on Sunday. While Boese helped anchor the defense, Schmitz booted the game’s first goal. Both players are four-years starters.
“Kim and Katie were big reasons why we won today and why we’ve been so successful in the past,” Whitman coach Scott Shields said. “They are the first seniors in Whitman women’s soccer history to have winning seasons for all four years.”
Schmitz opened the scoring for Whitman in the ninth minute of play, taking a long ball from junior Jennifer Telfer and shooting from the right side of the box. It was her second goal of the season.
That was it for the scoring until Whitman junior Lauren DeYoung scored 20 minutes into the second half. Junior Emily Marshall got the assist, centering the ball for DeYoung’s shot into the right corner of the net. It was DeYoung’s fourth goal of the season.
Four minutes later, Whitman made it 3-0 on junior Jennifer Toy’s second goal of the season. Mckenzie Hoffman, also a junior, got the assist.

Whitman falls to 10-7-1 on the season and 7-6-1 in conference.
Whitman, coming off a big 3-1 victory over Willamette last Sunday, was intent on giving Puget Sound a tougher battle than earlier in the season, when the Loggers defeated the Missionaries 5-0 in Walla Walla.
This time, both teams were scoreless until late in the first half, when Puget Sound’s Katy Daly collected a ball from defender Bridget Stolee on a corner kick and connected from inside the six-yard box. Coming with less than three minutes left in the opening half, it was Daly’s fifth goal of the season.
“It was a good battle,” Whitman coach Scott Shields said. “They definitely outshot us quite a bit, but overall we had some threatening opportunities and just weren’t able to capitalize. Our defense was fantastic.”
Whitman defenders held Puget Sound’s Cortney Kjar, the NWC scoring leader with 16 goals and five assists, in check throughout the game. Kjar got off three shots, none of them on goal.
Erin Williams made two saves in goal for the Loggers, collecting her 14th shutout of the season. Annie Owen had five saves in the loss for Whitman. Puget Sound outshot Whitman 15-3 overall and led 11-3 in corner kicks.

The Missionaries play at Pacific Lutheran at 11 a.m. Sunday. Whitman then closes out its season at home on Friday, Nov. 5, hosting Whitworth.
An early Pacific Lutheran goal was the difference Sunday afternoon as the Whitman women’s soccer team lost its second 1-0 decision in as many days in Tacoma.
Sixteen minutes into the first half, Pacific Lutheran’s Brita Lider retrieved a loose ball following a corner kick and centered a pass to teammate Andrea Gabler, who headed a shot just past Whitman goalkeeper Annie Owen. It was Gabler’s team-leading seventh goal of the season.

The Missionaries return home for their final game of the season against Lewis & Clark on Friday. The game starts at 11am.
The Whitman women's soccer team celebrated a season-ending win Friday, downing Lewis & Clark 5-1 at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

For Whitman seniors Katey Schmitz and Kim Boese, today's victory capped two much appreciated soccer careers. While Boese helped anchor the defense, midfielder Schmitz tallied three assists to finish her career with 17 goals and 17 assists.
"It'll be hard to replace Katey and Kim next year, but I guess it's time for them to move on to bigger and better things" Whitman coach Scott Shield said. "They've both contributed so much to our program over the last four years. We'll be sad to see them go."
First-year forward Kristen Berndt opened Whitman's scoring against Lewis & Clark, booting her ninth goal of the season just 93 seconds into the game. Junior Mckenzie Hoffman and Schmitz were credited with assists on the play.
Five minutes later, sophomore Sammie Arthur took a pass from Schmitz and fired a scoring shot over the head of the Lewis & Clark goalkeeper.
Whitman continued to pressure the Lewis and Clark defense throughout the first half, scoring all five of its goals before the halftime break. Arthur finished the day with a hat trick, the second of her young career.
Berndt notched two goals on the day, completing her rookie season with 10 goals and two assists, good for a team-leading 22 points. It marks the fifth consecutive season that a first-year player has led the Whitman women in scoring.
Lewis & Clark's Lisa Housman tallied her team's only goal Friday in the 67th minute.
"Finishing with a win today is fantastic for us," Shields said. "This is the first time in my career here that we've finished with a winning record in our conference. Next year we're going to keep trying to build on what Schmitz and Boese have have helped us establish over the past four years."
In its first meeting this season with Lewis & Clark, Whitman picked up a 1-0 victory in Portland. Today's loss drops Lewis & Clark to 2-15-1 on the season and 0-15 in conference. The Pioneers conclude their season Saturday in Spokane against Whitworth.
