2004 Fall Season Highlights

Friday, Aug. 27
Highline C.C. 2, Whitman 0

Scoring once off a corner kick and once off a penalty kick, Highline Community College posted a 2-0 exhibition game victory over the Whitman men's soccer team Friday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

"The result wasn't as important as the opportunity to assess all of our players in game-like situations," Whitman coach Mike Washington said. "We played three 30-minute periods, and we used three different formations in each period."

Despite the jumble of formations and player substitutions, the Missionaries produced several scoring chances, Washington said. "We had four or five one-on-one opportunities and just failed to convert."

"This exhibition gives us something to build on," Washington added. "It gives us a better idea of what areas need work. Before today, we've only had five days of practice together."

Whitman kicks off its regular season next weekend with three games in three days, starting Friday, Sept. 3, at Concordia. The Missionaries then host Northwest College at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, before traveling to Spokane on Sunday, Sept. 5, for a game against Lawrence University.

Friday, Sept. 3
Concordia-Portland 3, Whitman 1

Two first-half goals were the difference as NAIA Div. I Concordia University slipped past the Whitman men’s soccer team 3-1 Friday evening in Portland, Ore. The Cavaliers, the two-time defending Cascade Conference champions, improved to 2-1 on the season while Whitman started its season with the loss.

The Missionaries battled Concordia to a scoreless standoff until junior Robert Lossert scored in the 27th minute of play. Senior Lucas Brooks added a second goal for the Cavaliers a few minutes before halftime.

Concordia extended its lead to 3-0 in the 65th minute of the second half. Whitman notched its goal three minutes later when sophomore Egan Brinkman found the back of the net, assisted by freshman Andy Huntington.

"Concordia is an outstanding team," Whitman coach Mike Washington said. "They are one of the better teams we've seen."

The Cavaliers outshot Whitman 12-5. "We played with a lot more confidence in the second half," Washington said. "We defended quite well. Above all, we got stronger as the game went on. We looked our best toward the end."

Whitman returns home Saturday for a 2 p.m. game against Northwest University.

Whitman 1, Northwest 0

The Whitman men’s soccer team notched its first victory of the season Saturday afternoon, beating Northwest University 1-0 at the Whitman Athletic Fields. The game left both teams with early season records of 1-1.

Whitman dictated a physical style of play in the first half, picking up three yellow cards and 13 team fouls. After the teams traded shots on goal, the Missionaries capitalized on freshman forward Andy Huntington’s left-footed cross to senior co-captain Brad Bowen. With less than five minutes remaining before halftime, Bowen rocketed the ball past the Eagle goalkeeper to give Whitman a 1-0 lead.

The second half calmed down a bit, but the intensity was still high. Sophomore striker Egan Brinkman managed two shots on goal, but the Missionaries were unable to extend their lead. Fortunately for Whitman, senior goalkeeper Eric Dottarar recorded his first shutout of the young season. His six saves included a diving stop in the 88th minute that prevented Northwest from pulling even on the scoreboard.

“It was important for our team to find a way to win,” Whitman coach Mike Washington said. “Our defense shut them down in the second half. We’re glad to get the victory.”

Northwest outshot Whitman 11-10 and had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Whitman plays its third game in three days on Sunday, traveling to Spokane, Wash., to play Lawrence University at 2 p.m. at Whitworth College.

Whitman 2, Lawrence 1 (OT)

Sophomore Egan Brinkman’s scoring shot from the right side to the far post gave the Whitman College men’s soccer team a 2-1 overtime victory over Lawrence University Sunday afternoon in a game played in Spokane, Wash.

Assisted by sophomore Kirk Thorson, Brinkman booted his second goal of the season at the 6:01 mark of overtime. “It was one of the nicest goals I’ve seen in a long time,” Whitman coach Mike Washington said.

The Missionaries, winning their second game in two days, improved to 2-1 on the season. Lawrence, an NCAA Div. III school in Appleton, Wisc., dropped to 0-2.

Both teams came out firing in the first half, taking 18 shots between them, seven of which warranted saves. “We felt a bit of pressure in the first 10-15 minutes of the game,” Whitman coach Mike Washington said. “Eric [Dottarar] kept us in it with a couple of fantastic saves.”

Whitman struck first in the 21st minute of play, notching the opening goal on a Brad Bowen ball played over the top to Craig Yuen who then shuffled it to Andy Huntington for the finish. Huntington, a freshman, now has one goal and two assists in his first three collegiate games.

Whitman played a strong second half, limiting Lawrence to five shots. The Vikings made the most of their few opportunities however, and finally managed to slip one by Dottarar in the 87th minute to send the game to overtime.

“I felt like we were really in control of the game, but they kept bringing guys up and applying pressure,” Washington said. “The goal almost seemed inevitable.”

After playing games on three consecutive days, Whitman gets some well deserved rest before its next contest. The Missionaries host Bethel College at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

Bethel 4, Whitman 1

In a wild game that produced five goals and five yellow cards, the Whitman men’s soccer team fell 4-1 to Bethel University Friday night at the Whitman Athletic Fields. The Missionaries dropped to 2-2 on the season, while the Royals improved to 3-0.

Whitman set the tone early, taking advantage of a Bethal offside trap with a steady stream of long balls to forwards Andy Huntington and Egan Brinkman. Huntington, a freshman, turned one of the attacks into his second goal of the season in the 13th minute, sending a Peter Randall cross straight to the back of the net.

Bethel fought back, however, and after squandering a penalty kick opportunity earlier in the half, converted a ricocheted ball in the box into a 1-1 deadlock with less than two minutes to play in the first half.

The intensity picked up in the second half, when the referee handed out five yellow cards, three to Whitman and two to Bethel. After 30 minutes of very physical play, which saw the Missionaries nearly score on at least two occasions, it was the Royals who got the deciding break. Whitman was called for a foul in the box in the 76th minute, and Abe Voyen cashed in the penalty kick to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

The penalty seemed to take the wind out of the Missionary sails. The Royals added a third goal with little more than 12 minutes left to play. The final score came with eight seconds remaining.

Whitman takes on cross-town rival Walla Walla Community College in an exhibition match to close out its non-conference schedule. The game is set for 7 p.m. Monday at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

Whitman 3, Pacific 1

The Whitman men’s soccer team opened its Northwest Conference season with a 3-1 victory over Pacific Saturday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields. The win improves the Missionary season record to 3-2. Pacific fell 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference.

After both teams traded early scoring chances, Whitman seized the first break of the game on a Ryan Porter free kick from midfield. The Boxer defense swarmed to the ball, but it fell at the feet of Brian Stater, a Missionary senior co-captain, who blasted it home in the 29th minute.

Pacific dominated possession for most of the half, outshooting the Missionaries 13-6, but it was Whitman that took a 1-0 lead into intermission.

The Boxers scored the equalizer early in the second half when Mark Madeira’s corner kick was headed into the net by senior Bobby Shinn.

Pacific continued to generate most of the game’s scoring opportunities, but Whitman grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 73rd minute when sophomore Kirk Thorson’s free kick led to senior Harris Esarey’s scoring header.

Nine minutes later from a similar spot on the field, Thorson bent another free kick toward the Pacific goal, which Porter headed past the Boxer keeper for the game’s final score. All three goals for the Missionaries came from defensive players. Each goal was also the first of the season for each player.

Both of Thorson’s assists were spectacular bending balls into the box. After the game Whitman coach Mike Washington joked, “It would have been hard not to score on those balls Kirk served up.”

Eric Dottarar, Whitman’s senior keeper, had a strong game in goal, collecting eight saves. Pacific keeper Chris Caswell made two saves.

Despite being out shot 24-11, and committing over twice as many fouls as Pacific (19, 8) Whitman managed to pull out the victory. “We’ve talked about winning some games ugly, and that’s what we did,” Washington said. “It was a great way to start the conference season.”

Whitman hosts George Fox in more NWC action at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Pacific plays Sunday at Whitworth.

Sunday, Sept. 19
Whitman 1, George Fox 1 (2OT)

Whitman and George Fox battled through 30 minutes of overtime, all to no avail, as the two teams finally settled for a 1-1 tie in Northwest Conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields. Whitman finished its first weekend of NWC play with records of 1-0-1 in conference and 3-2-1 on the season. George Fox is 1-4-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference.

After a scoreless first half, Whitman wasted little time denting the scoreboard after intermission. Freshman Andy Huntington provided the heroics, stealing a ball 10 yards outside the center box and nailing an unassisted goal with less than two minutes gone from the second-half clock.

Huntington now has three goals and two assists in his first six collegiate games.

The game swung back and forth for the remainder of the second half, with goalkeepers Kyle Putnam (George Fox) and Eric Dottarar (Whitman) making six saves between them. George Fox pulled even in the 79th minute of play, however, when sophomore Brian Zaro converted a 25-yard direct free kick. A lunging Dottarar barely missed saving the ball as it sailed over his outstretched hands into the upper right corner of the net.

Neither team scored again during regulation play, forcing overtime. The two sides battled through two scoreless 15-minute overtime sessions, resulting in the tie.

"It was a tough game for us, but we'd definitely rather take the tie than a loss," Whitman coach Mike Washington said. "We played strong defensively, but we struggled in the midfield today. I don't think we came out with the confidence that we did in our win yesterday."

Saturday, Sept. 25
Willamette 2, Whitman 1

The road was rocky, so to speak, and so was the field, as the Whitman men’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 Northwest Conference decision to Willamette Saturday afternoon in Salem, Oregon.

But despite the tie, which left Whitman with a 1-1-1 record in NWC play, the Missionaries head into Sunday's games in a three-way tie for second place in the early season standings. Whitman is 3-3-1 overall, while Willamette is now 1-2 in conference and 1-4-2 on the season.

"Willamette was supposed to have a new field this year, but it didn't materialize as expected," Washington said. "So, they've been practicing and playing on the old field. It was hard, bumpy and uneven. The ball doesn't bounce true."

Washington said Willamette compensated for the field by "playing a lot of long balls down the field. They played more in the air than they did on the ground. They have a couple of big forwards, and the way they played was very effective for them. They had a better game plan than we did."

In contrast, Whitman "really struggled trying to play on that field," Washington said. "We weren't able to pass the ball around as we normally do."

Willamette picked up its first goal with less than five minutes remaining in the first half. Matthew Lehman headed home the goal, scoring off Willamette's sixth corner of the half. The two sides combined to commit 20 fouls in the opening 45 minutes, setting the tone for an even tougher second half, when an additional 24 fouls were whistled.

Down a goal, Whitman was unable to muster much offense in the second half, managing just three shots. Willamette added its second goal in the 89th minute to put the game out of reach.

Whitman avoided the shutout, however, when sophomore Dan Beekman notched his first goal of the season, scoring off a free kick from sophomore Sam Morris-Rosenfeld with just 20 seconds left on the clock. Beekman picked the ball out of the air with the side of his foot, knocking his shot into the corner of the net.

“Dan played most of the second half and did a great job for us,” Washington said.

Whitman keeper Eric Dottarar made five saves in goal.

Whitman travels to McMinnville, Ore., on Sunday to face Linfield, one of the teams tied with the Missionaries for second place.

Sunday, Sept. 26
Whitman 2, Linfield 0

The Northwest Conference season is still young, but the Whitman men’s soccer team jumped into sole possession of second place with a 2-0 victory at Linfield Sunday afternoon in McMinnville, Ore.

With records of 2-1-1 in the NWC and 4-3-1 overall, Whitman trails only Whitworth in the conference standings. The Pirates are 4-0 in the NWC and 7-1 on the season. Linfield finished its weekend with records of 2-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference.

Sophomore Hunter Benedict, playing his first season of collegiate soccer, scored his first college goal to give the Missionaries a 1-0 lead at the 37:04 mark of the first half. Benedict scored when Linfield goalie Taylor Fowles got tangled up with a teammate, allowing Benedict a clean shot at the open net.

Midway through the second half, the Missionaries netted their second goal of the game as a free kick unfolded. Junior Peter Randall and freshman Andy Huntington got the assists, setting up junior defender Ryan Porter for his second goal of the season.

The Wildcats outshot the Missionaries 16-7 but were never able to capitalize on their opportunities. Whitman goalkeeper Eric Dottarar stopped six shots on goal to record his second shutout of the season.

“We had a great game defensively and a great overall team performance,” Whitman coach Mike Washington said. “Although Linfield had lots of shots, our pressure forced many of them to go wide or over the net. There’s not a player who didn’t work hard for us today.”

Whitman continues NWC play next Saturday and Sunday when its hosts Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound at the Whitman Athletic Fields. Puget Sound (2-1) and Pacific Lutheran (1-1-1) are right behind Whitman in the jumbled NWC standings.

Pacific Lutheran 1, Whitman 0

The Whitman men’s soccer team lost a hard-fought 1-0 Northwest Conference decision to Pacific Lutheran Saturday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields. The loss drops the Missionaries to 2-2-1 in conference and 4-4-1 overall. The Lutes are now 2-1-1 in the NWC and 3-6-1 on the season.

In a first half that was well played and very physical, the Missionaries kept pace in a scoreless battle despite being outshot by the Loggers 9-5.

“We worked on figuring out a way in which we could be effective,” Whitman coach Mike Washington said. “We did that well in the first half. Our defense was solid.”

Just two minutes into the second half, however, the Lutes lit up the scoreboard on freshman Mike Ferguson’s blast from 10 yards out, his fourth scoring strike of the season. Whitman’s frustration mounted following the goal as the home team picked up three yellow cards in 10 minutes. A fourth yellow card followed in the 83rd minute.

“We didn’t react well to the goal,” Washington said. “The way we win is to limit the other team’s chances and to make the most of ours. That didn’t happen.”

The Missionaries nearly scored late in second half when Puget Sound keeper Jared Harman corralled a ball as he was falling into his net. The goal was disallowed, however, when the referee ruled that Harman was knocked backwards by contact with one of the Whitman players converging on the ball.

Whitman played without a key member of its offense in sophomore starter Kirk Thorson, who is sidelined by a leg injury. Thorson is expected to miss at least three more games.

Puget Sound 4, Whitman 0

The Whitman men’s soccer team lost to defending Northwest Conference champion Puget Sound 4-0 Sunday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields. Whitman drops to 2-3-1 in conference and to 4-5-1 on the season, while the Loggers improve to 3-1-1 in the NWC and to 6-1-2 overall.

With Whitman missing three starters and looking sluggish early, Puget Sound took advantage by scoring two goals in the first seven minutes of the game. Freshman Josh Hedrick scored a few seconds shy of the five-minute mark and then assisted on freshman Greg Swanson’s goal a few minutes later.

As both teams began to settle into rhythm after the early fireworks, Puget Sound struck again in the 21st minute, this time on senior Tyler Niemack’s penalty kick. With less than four minutes left before intermission, senior Eliot Peterson added Puget Sound’s fourth and final goal.

The Missionaries managed just one shot in each half. With the Loggers producing 15 shots, 12 on goal, Whitman keeper Eric Dottarar made eight saves to limit Puget Sound’s scoring total.

Drawing five yellow cards in the second half while playing a more physical game, Whitman kept the Logger attack under wraps. Puget Sound managed just four shots, two on goal, over the final 45 minutes.

The Missionaries played without injured starters Kirk Thorson and Peter Randall. A third starter, Harris Esarey, played limited minutes Sunday after missing all of Saturday’s game.

Whitman plays its next game in one week, hosting Whitworth on Sunday, Oct. 10, in a 4 p.m. game.

Sunday, Oct. 10
Whitworth 3, Whitman 1

The Whitman men’s soccer team lost a rugged 3-1 Northwest Conference decision to first place Whitworth Sunday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields. Whitworth elevated its record to 9-1-1 overall and 6-0-1 in conference, while the Missionaries slipped to 2-4-1 in conference and to 4-6-1 on the season.

Whitman was whistled for 15 fouls during the game, four more than Whitworth, but the most noteworthy foul came in the 23rd minute of play. That’s when an altercation led to Whitworth junior Todd Sabrowski punching Whitman sophomore Chris Dorough in the face. Sabrowski drew a red card and was ejected from the game. Dorough suffered a possible concussion and did not return to the game.

Due to the ejection, Whitworth was forced to play the rest of the game with only 10 players on the field at a time. The Pirates continued to control the tempo of play, however, eventually outshooting Whitman 18 to 5.

About 10 minutes after the red card incident, Whitworth took a 1-0 lead when freshman Skye Henderson dribbled into the middle of the box and hit the bottom left corner of the net.

Four minutes into the second half, sophomore Niko Varlamos took a pass from Brad Suhm and scored from the right side of the goal. Varlamos, the leading scorer in the conference, has 12 goals in 11 games.

“With Whitworth down to ten men, we had more space and time,” Whitman coach Mike Washington said. “But we got carried away with the fact that we had one extra player and gave up two easy goals.”

Capitalizing on a crossing pass from Varlamos, Henderson scored his second goal of the match in 60th minute, giving Whitworth a 3-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, Whitman responded when freshman Craig Yuen corralled a long ball from sophomore Brett Rawson, dribbled past a defender and scored his first collegiate goal.

“Whitworth is at the top of the conference for a reason,” Washington said. “They are a great team. I’m a little bit disappointed with the way we played today, and I think it’ll still take some time before we got our offense together. But we’re going to stay focused on meeting our goal of finishing at least at .500. The next four games in our schedule are definitely winnable for us.”

The Whitman men head to western Oregon next weekend, playing Saturday at George Fox and Sunday at Pacific.

Giving up two goals in the first five minutes of play, the Whitman men's soccer team fell 3-1 at George Fox Saturday afternoon in Newberg, Oregon.

The fourth consecutive Missionary loss drops Whitman to 4-7-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the Northwest Conference. The Bruins are now 2-5-1 in NWC play and 3-8-2 on the season.

After George Fox senior Max Sorenson scored an unassisted goal three minutes into the game, senior Craig Laughland followed with another goal only one minute later.

"We probably had our biggest mistakes defensively of the season today," Whitman coach Mike Washington said. "We basically lost the game in the first five minutes."

Whitman bounced back, however, when freshman Craig Yuen converted a free kick with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. It was Yuen's second goal of the season and second score in as many games.

Unfortunately, it wasn't enough for the Missionaries. The Bruins tallied their third goal off a corner kick in the second half to seal the victory. Both teams had 17 shots on goal.

"Apart from the goals we gave up, we played well," Washington said. "We knocked the ball around well and had lots of good chances, but we couldn't come back from our mistakes in the first five minutes."

Earlier in the season in Walla Walla, Whitman and George Fox played to a 1-1 overtime tie.

The Missionaries play Pacific University at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Forest Grove, Ore.

Pacific 2, Whitman 1

Unable to capitalize on its scoring opportunies, the Whitman men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Pacific Sunday afternoon in Forest Grove, Ore.

"Overall, I thought we had the run of play," Whitman coach Mike Washington said. "I thought we should have won the game. We created better scoring chances but couldn't finish them off."

The first half accounted for all of the scoring. Pacific sophomore Kyle Chown made it 1-0 in the fifth minute of play, heading a crossing pass from junior Todd Gienger into the left corner of the net. With 34:09 showing on the clock, Ricky Shinn gave the Boxers a 2-0 cushion on a 20-yard direct kick.

Sophomore Egan Brinkman put the Missionaries on the board in the 42nd minute, scoring his third goal of the season off a corner kick.

The offense slowed in the second half despite a number of scoring drives by both teams. Whitman's senior goalkeeper, Eric Dottarar, finished with four saves.

The loss drops Whitman to 4-8-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the Northwest Conference. The Boxers are now 4-5-0 in NWC play and 5-8-0 on the season.

Last month, in a game played in Walla Walla, Whitman scored a 3-1 victory over Pacific.

The Whitman men’s soccer team battled Linfield to a scoreless standoff for 80 minutes Saturday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields, but the visiting Wildcats broke through in the final 10 minutes for a 2-0 victory.

Winning their seventh straight game, the Wildcats retained at least a share of second place in the Northwest Conference standings, improving to 9-6-1 on the season and 7-2-1 in league play. Whitman slipped to 2-7-1 in conference and 4-9-1 overall.

Linfield junior Kevin Popich broke Saturday’s scoreless tie in the 81st minute of play. Teammates Jason Wong and Adam Howard assisted on the score.

With less than two minutes to play, Linfield sophomore Chris Paradis recovered a loose ball in front of the goal and hit the left side of the net. Paradis and Popich lead the Wildcats in season scoring with seven goals each.

While Saturday's game was close most of the way, Linfield outshot Whitman by a wide 24-2 margin, which included a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. Whitman keeper Eric Dottarar finished with six saves.

Saturday’s victory gave Linfield a split in the season series between the two schools. Whitman notched a 2-0 victory over the Wildcats in late September in McMinnville, Ore.

Two early goals was the difference as the Whitman men’s soccer team dropped a 4-2 Northwest Conference decision to Willamette Sunday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

“It’s the same story we’ve had for awhile,” Whitman coach Mike Washington said. “We gave up two goals early and had to dig ourselves out of a hole. The ball just didn’t bounce our way when we needed it to. We’re hurting right now. It’s a tough position to be in.”

Dropping its eighth straight game, the Missionaries are 4-10-1 overall and 2-8-1 in conference play. Willamette is 3-8 in conference and 3-11-2 on the season.

Willamette freshman Kyle Gouveia scored off a penalty kick less than three minutes into the game, giving the Bearcats an early 1-0 advantage. Three minutes later, freshman Trevor Jones converted a cross from Gouveia for a 2-0 Willamette lead. It was the first goal of the season for both players.

Whitman bounced back quickly. Sophomore Egan Brinkman scored his fourth goal of the season in the 10th minute of play, capitalizing on sophomore Kirk Thorson’s free kick. Six minutes later, Thorson blasted a 15-yard free kick into the top left corner of the net to knot the score at 2-2. It was the first goal of the season for Thorson, who has missed several games due to injury.

The two sides were scoreless for the rest of the first half, which saw Whitman outshoot the Bearcats 12-7. A few seconds into the second half, however, Willamette took the lead for good when freshman Michael Rodrigues dribbled into the box and scored an unassisted goal, his fourth of the season. Senior Steven Smith completed the scoring at the 82:00 mark, booting an unassisted goal, his first of the season.

Whitman outshot the Bearcats 21-17 in the loss. The Missionaries also had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

In their first meeting of the season, Willamette posted a 2-1 victory over Whitman in late September in Salem, Ore.

Whitman plays its final three games on the road, starting with contests next weekend against Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma, Wash.

“We played a lot of defense today,” Whitman coach Mike Washington said. “The plan was to low pressure them and then try to counter-attack. It was a very disciplined game and we played hard. I’m happy with the result.”

Puget Sound senior Mike Gallego booted the game’s only goal at the 20:15 mark in the first half. Gallego scored from the top of the penalty box after receiving a pass from midfielder Anthony Fioretti. Forward Josh Hedrick was also credited with an assist on the play.
