The Whitman women's soccer team concluded its preseason workouts with a 3-0 exhibition-game victory over Walla Walla Community College Monday at the Whitman Athletic Fields. Sophomores Hillary Chisholm, Kara Mackenzie and McKenzie Hoffman each scored goals in the exhibition match.

Senior Rena Parcells and sophomore Anne Owen split time in goal for Whitman to complete the shutout.

The Missionaries open their regular season at home against Eastern Oregon on Wednesday, Sept. 3, before traveling to Tacoma for weekend matches with University of Santa Cruz and Warner Pacific College on Sep. 6 and 7.

Eastern Oregon University was no match for the Whitman women's soccer team Wednesday as the Missionaries rolled to a 9-1 victory in Walla Walla. It was the first regular season game for Whitman. Eastern Oregon fell to 0-3.

Five different Missionaries scored goals and seven recorded assists during the one-sided match. First-year forward Sammie Arthur found the back of the net three times to lead the attack. "We had some really fun goals to watch - a couple of headers and some great crosses," Whitman coach Scott Shields said.

Senior Kaitlin Varady scored in 69th minute and again in the 79th minute. Sophomore Jeniffer Toy also had two goals and an assist.

"It was a good opportunity to see everyone play," Shields added. "I was very pleased with our younger players as they stepped into their roles."

Other goal scorers for the Missionaries included senior Sara Weihmann and another member of Whitman's first-year class, Betsy Neel. Sophomore Emily Marshall notched two assists. Kara Mackenzie, Kim Boese, Hillary Chisholm, McKenzie Hoffman and Vanessa Warner each added an assist.

Eastern Oregon's only goal came in the 43rd minute on a shot that deflected off a Whitman defender. It was the only shot of the day for the Mountaineers against a strong Whitman defense. The offense was just as dominant, controlling the ball for most of the game and shooting on goal 23 times.

The Missionaries travel to Tacoma, Wash. this weekend for a pair of matches on the University of Puget Sound campus. Whitman takes on the University of Santa Cruz on Saturday, Sept. 6 (11 a.m.), and Warner Pacific College on Sunday (1 p.m.).

The Whitman women's soccer team continued its dominant play Saturday, downing No. 22 UC-Santa Cruz 4-0 at the University of Puget Sound. The Missionaries stay perfect on the season, at 2-0. UC-Santa Cruz, ranked fourth in the West Region, fell to 1-1 on the year.

The Whitman offense was powered by senior Sara Weihmann, who scored the match's first two goals. Weihmann's first goal came 12:39 into the contest as she knocked in a loose ball after a corner kick. The second was a direct free kick that glanced off the post in the 60th minute.

"Weihmann had a fantastic game," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "All the seniors stepped up today."

In the 66th minute, first-year forward Sammie Arthur took a pass from junior Kim Boese and found the back of the net from 18 yards out. Ten minutes later, senior Kaitlin Varady scored a goal assisted by junior Katey Schmitz for the final tally of the game.

"To come away with a 4-0 win is a fantastic result," Shields said. "I was pretty confident going in, but 4-0 against this quality of a team is incredible for us."

Senior goalkeeper Rena Parcells got the shutout for Whitman after spending last fall abroad in Australia. Parcells faced just one shot on goal as the Whitman defense continued its stellar play.

The Missionaries fired 10 shots, five on goal, while UC-Santa Cruz got off just five shots.

Whitman continues play on Sunday, taking on Warner Pacific College at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash. (1 p.m.).

Sunday, Sept. 7

The Whitman women's soccer team posted a 4-0 victory for the second day in a row Sunday, defeating Warner Pacific College in Tacoma, Wash. The Missionaries have yet to lose this fall, scoring 17 goals in their first three games. Warner Pacific fell to 0-3 on the season.

First-year forward Sammie Arthur continued her offensive onslaught, scoring once and assisting on another goal. Arthur has compiled 11 points in her first three games, scoring five goals with one assist.

Arthur's goal was the first of the match, a header assisted by sophomore Jennifer Telfer and junior Katey Schmitz in the 12th minute. Sophomore Mckenzie Hoffman scored her first of two goals during the match at 23:03, again assisted by Schmitz.

Just after halftime, sophomore Jennifer Toy dribbled past a defender to score an unassisted goal. Hoffman's second goal was assisted by Sara Weihmann and Arthur at 81:12.

"This is one of the best starts to a season we've had in a long time," said Whitman coach Scott Shields. "We really played well as a team today."

The Missionaries next play Central Washington University, an NCAA Div. II school. The game is set for 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15 at the Whitman soccer field.

The Whitman women's soccer team remained unbeaten Monday evening in Walla Walla, defeating Central Washington University 1-0. The Missionaries are now 4-0 on the year, while Central Washington, an NCAA Div. II school, is 2-5.

Sophomore Mckenzie Hoffman scored the lone goal of the contest, her third of the season. Hoffman took a loose ball in the box in the 71st minute of play and knocked it into the back of the net. First-year player Sammie Arthur was credited with the assist. The assist by Arthur gives her a team-leading 12 points on the year.

"This was a great game for us," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "Three years ago our seniors played Central in their first season here and were blown out 5-0. It's a great testament to what these seniors have done for the program."

Whitman goalkeeper Rena Parcells, a senior, was credited with the shutout. Parcells made three saves during the match.

The Missionaries accumulated 22 shots, 12 of which were on goal. Hoffman contributed four shots on goal while seniors Meghan Bowen and Sara Weihmann had two each. The strong Missionary backline of Bowen, Kim Boese, Hillary Chisholm, and Lindsay Gore have allowed just one goal in the first four games, and just six shots on goal.

Whitman takes on Simon Fraser University in its next contest, slated for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18. Simon Fraser, and NAIA team from Canada, is ranked 9th nationally.

Facing the 11th ranked NAIA team in the nation, the Whitman women's soccer team fell 1-0 Thursday evening in Walla Walla. It was the first loss of the season for the Missionaries as they fell to 4-1. Simon Fraser improved to 5-3 on the year.

The game's single goal was scored just after halftime, in the 49th minute. "I thought it would be a one-goal game," Whitman coach Scott Shields said, "its just unfortunate that it was scored by them."

The teams were very even offensively, with Simon Fraser recording 16 shots, 10 on goal and Whitman 14 shots, nine on goal. Whitman goalie Anne Owen made eight saves while her counterpart made 10.

Kim Boese, Hillary Chisholm and Mckenzie Hoffman each had two shots on goal.

"We need competition like this to have a good year," Shields noted. "This was a perfect preparation for our game match against Whitworth next week." The Missionaries take on their rival next Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 4 p.m. in Walla Walla. It will be the conference opener for both squads.

Sophomore Jennifer Toy scored one goal in the 73rd minute, and another in the second overtime to propel the Whitman women's soccer team past Whitworth 2-1 Wednesday in Walla Walla. The Missionaries, ranked sixth in the West Region, improved to 5-1 on the season, and opened Northwest Conference play with a win. Whitworth, ranked fourth in the West, dropped to 5-1, 0-1.

Whitworth led for much of the game after an unassisted goal in the 15th minute. Toy evened the match off a cross from senior Sarah Weihmann, sending the game to overtime tied 1-1. Neither team produced a goal in the first overtime, although the Missionaries came very close on a Katey Schmitz free kick that hit the crossbar. Toy's goal in the 107th minute of play was her fifth of the year and was assisted by Hillary Chisholm.

Senior Whitman goalkeeper Rena Parcells made eight saves during the game, coming from 15 Whitworth shots.

The Missionaries fired off 13 shots, seven of which were on goal. Mckenzie Hoffman, Sammie Arthur, Lauren DeYoung, Megan McConville and Weihmann each had shots on goal. Whitworth got off 15 shots, nine of which were on goal. Joelle Boslett and Jael Hagerot each had two shots on goal.

The Missionaries and the Pirates travel to Tacoma, Wash. for a pair of Northwest Conference matches this weekend versus Pacific Lutheran and No. 4 Puget Sound.

The Whitman women's soccer team fell 3-0 to host Pacific Lutheran Saturday in Tacoma, Wash. in a Northwest Conference match. The Missionaries are now 5-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Pacific Lutheran is also 1-1 in conference, and 5-3 overall.

The Lutes struck early in the match, scoring a goal in the second minute of play. Goals in the 31st minute and on a penalty kikc in the 57th minute extended the lead for Pacific Lutheran.

"We had a slow start in the first half," Whitman coach Scott Shields said, "but the game never really seemed out of reach until the penalty kick."

Whitman was unable to score on five shots on goal, tallying eight shots during the entire match. The Lutes had seven shots on goal and ten total shots. Kara Mackenzie, Meghan Bowen, Lauren DeYoung, Sara Weihmann, and Emily Marshall each had a shot on goal for the Missionaries.

Goalkeeper Rena Parcells made four saves during the match, allowing all three goals in 90 minutes of play.

The Missionaries take on the number four ranked team in the nation, Puget Sound, on Sunday in Tacoma.

The Whitman women's soccer team was downed 2-1 by Puget Sound Sunday in Tacoma, Wash., in a Northwest Conference matchup. Puget Sound, ranked 4th in the nation and No. 1 in the West Region, improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Missionaries fell to 5-3, 1-2.

Sophomore Mckenzie Hoffman scored Whitman's only goal and the first of the match, beating the keeper at the 9:55 mark. The Missionaries went into the half with the lead, and held it until 70th minute. The Loggers scored twice in a thirteen minute span to take a 2-1 lead, and held on for the win.

Whitman was outshot during the match, 15-6. Puget Sound also held the advantage in shots on goal, six to four. Hoffman had two shots on goal, while Kara Mackenzie and first-year forward Megan McConville each had one. Senior goalkeeper Rena Parcells made four saves during the match, one more than her Puget Sound counterpart.

The Missionaries host Pacific and George Fox next weekend in Northwest Conference action.

First-year forward Sammie Arthur headed a ball past the Pacific goalkeeper in the 110th minute of play to give the Whitman women's soccer team a 2-1 overtime victory over the Boxers in Walla Walla Saturday. The Missionaries improved to 6-3 overall, 2-2 in Northwest Conference play. Pacific fell to 6-4, 1-3.

Arthur, scoring her team-leading sixth goal of the year, took the pass from fellow first-year player Erin Frame.

The Boxers got on the board first, scoring in the 60th minute. Whitman goalie Rena Parcells blocked one shot, but the rebound bounced to a Boxer forward and was quickly knocked in.

The Missionaries were still down 1-0 with just seven minutes to play in regulation, but as they did in their last home game against Whitworth, found a way to score a goal in the final minutes. Sophomore Mckenzie Hoffman dribbled past her defender and found senior Sara Weihmann behind the goalie. Weihmann chipped the ball into the net to tie the game, and then Arthur ended it in the second overtime. The Boxers had an open-net chance to end the game in the first overtime, but the shot sailed high.

"We really dodged a bullet," Whitman coach Scott Shields said, "but we definetely deserved this win. Pacific is a good team with smart players."

Whitman dominated the game offensively, outshooting the Boxers 34 to 12. The Missionaries also had 14 shots on goal, while Pacific had five. Parcells played the whole game in net for the Missionaries, making four saves.

The Missionaries look to remain perfect at home in Northwest Conference action on Sunday as they take on George Fox.

Sunday, Oct. 5

The Whitman women's soccer team downed visiting George Fox 4-1 Sunday in Walla Walla, in a Northwest Conference match. The Missionaries improved to 7-3 on the season, 3-2 in NWC action. George Fox fell to 2-6-1, 0-4.

Whitman dominated the match both on offense and defense. Whitman outshot the Bruins 19-5 and only allowed just one shot on goal, which resulted in George Fox's only goal of the game. Whitman finished with 10 shots on goal, three finding the back of the net in the first half.

Sammie Arthur, who scored the game-winning goal on Saturday, got things started in Sunday's game with a goal in the 25th of the first half. Arthur's goal, assisted by Erin Frame, was her team-leading seventh of the season.

The Missionaries did not look back, scoring the next three goals. The other goals were scored by Emily Marshall, Kaitlin Varady (assisted by Betsy Neel), and Mckenzie Hoffman (assisted by Amy Kunkle-Patterson).

George Fox did not threaten until late when it scored its lone goal of the match, at 81:49.

The two-game sweep over the weekend moves Whitman into a tie for third place in the Northwest Conference with Linfield and Whitworth. Next weekend Whitman will play the Wildcats and first place Willamette University in Walla Walla.

The Whitman women's soccer team fell to Willamette, the nation's fourth-ranked NCAA Div. III team, 4-2 Saturday in Walla Walla. The Missionaries are now 7-4 overall, 3-3 in Northwest Conference play. Willamette is 10-0, 6-0.

The Missionaries took the early lead in the contest, scoring in the 21st minute. Sophomore Mckenzie Hoffman scored the first of her two goals on a header, assisted by junior Katey Schmitz. The Bearcats countered 15 minutes later, scoring an unassisted goal to tie the game at 1-1.

The match remained tied until eight minutes into the second half, when Willamette staked a 2-1 lead after a 15-yard shot found the back of the net. The Bearcats made it a two-goal game at 57:46 on another unassisted goal. Willamette's final tally of the day came in the 70th minute as it extended the lead to 4-1.

With a little under 10 minutes left to play, Hoffman took a pass from Kara Mackenzie and knocked it in, recording the final goal of the game.

"This was a great game to be a part of," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "Willamette is strong and deep at every position, but we definetely weren't outplayed."

Hoffman's two goals give her seven on the year, tied for the team lead with first-year forward Sammie Arthur. The Missionaries outshot the Bearcats 14 to 13, and each team had seven shots on goal.

The Missionaries play host to Linfield in Walla Walla on Sunday.

The Whitman women’s soccer team scored a 2-1 overtime victory over Linfield Sunday afternoon in Walla Walla. The win gives the Missionaries a record of 8-4 overall, 4-3 in Northwest Conference play. Linfield is now 8-4 overall and 3-4 in conference.

Whitman took the early lead on junior defender Kim Boese’s first goal of the year in the 20th minute of play. Linfield answered back seven minutes later, knotting the game at 1-1, and the score remained tied through the end regulation.

In the 11th minute of overtime, first-year forward Sammie Arthur booted her team-high eighth goal of the season to give Whitman the win. It was Arthur's third game-winning score of the season. Junior Katey Schmitz tallied her fifth assist of the season on the play.

“Once again Sammie came through,” Whitman coach Scott Shields said. “Linfield is a quality team to beat, and being at home really helped.”

“The defense played a great game, allowing only two shots on goal,” Shields said. Boese anchored the defense, which was playing without an injured Megan Bowen.

Whitman dominated play on offense as well, outshooting Linfield 23-10 and 16-2 in shots on goal. Eleven different Missionaries had a shot on goal; five had more than one shot on goal.

The Missionaries travel to George Fox and Pacific next weekend. In their previous meetings this season, Whitman beat George Fox 4-1 and downed Pacific 2-1 in overtime.

In Northwest Conference action Saturday in Newberg, Ore., Sammie Arthur and Hillary Chisholm scored goals as the Whitman women's soccer team downed George Fox 2-1. The Missionaries swept the season series and improved to 9-4 overall, 5-3 in conference. George Fox is 3-9-1, 1-7.

The Bruins got on the scoreboard first, scoring in the 63rd minute of play. Whitman tied the game just two minutes later as Arthur knocked the ball in after a pass from Katey Schmitz. With under four minutes to play, Chisholm moved up from her defender position and scored the game-winner. Emily Marshall was credited with the assist.

"Hillary definetely gets the game ball today," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "Annie Owen also had a fantastic game, and made several saves that would have been game-winners."

Owen had six saves on the day while facing 13 shots. The Bruins outshot Whitman 13-11, but the Missionaries had two more shots on goal, with nine. Arthur's goal was her team-leading ninth of the year.

"George Fox is a much improved team from our last meeting," Shields noted. Whitman won 4-1 against the Bruins two weeks ago in Walla Walla.

Whitman continues NWC play against Pacific on Sunday in Forest Grove, Ore.

The Whitman women's soccer team fell Sunday to Pacific on a goal in the final five minutes of play in Forest Grove, Ore. The Missionaries, ranked fifth in the West Region, are 9-5 overall, 5-4 in Northwest Conference action. Pacific improved to 8-7, 3-6 with the win. In the first meeting between the two teams in Walla Walla, Whitman shutout the Boxers 3-0.

The Missionaries dominated the game offensively, but were unable to capitalize on any shots. The Boxers were outshot 18-6, but managed the only goal of the game on a 25-yard free kick that floated into the right corner of the net at 84:58.

Sophomores Mckenzie Hoffman and Lauren DeYound each had two shots on goal, while Kara Mackenzie, Sara Weihmann, Vanessa Warner and Kaitlin Varady had one apiece. Pacific managed just three shots on Whitman goalkeeper Rena Parcells, three of which were saved.

The Missionaries return to Walla Walla next weekend for Northwest Conference matches against No. 9 Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran. Whitman lost to PLU 3-0 and Puget Sound 2-1 in late September in Tacoma, Wash.

The Whitman women’s soccer team fell to the University of Puget Sound 3-1 Saturday in Walla Walla. The Missionaries are now 9-6 on the season and 5-5 in Northwest Conference play. Puget Sound, ranked ninth nationally, improved to 13-1-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the conference.

Puget Sound took the lead on a penalty kick in the 11th minute, but Whitman was able to go into halftime tied after Kara Mackenzie’s first goal of the season, a penalty kick in the 17th minute of the game. Puget Sound took the lead early in the second half, scoring in the 48th minute. The Missionaries were unable to answer and Puget Sound tacked on another goal in the 87th minute of play.

Mackenzie had two shots on goal, while Kim Boese, Mckenzie Hoffman, Katey Schmitz and Megan McConville all had one shot on goal.

Whitman finishes up the weekend with a game Sunday against Pacific Lutheran University in Walla Walla. Game time is 11 a.m.

The Whitman College Women’s soccer team lost a heartbreaker 4-3 in double overtime to the visiting Pacific Lutheran University in Walla Walla Sunday. Whitman drops to 9-7 on the season and 5-6 in Northwest Conference play, while PLU moves to 8-9 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

Kara Mackenzie, who scored her first goal of the season on Saturday, scored the opening goal of the game in the sixth minute on an unassisted strike from thirty yards out. Whitman held a 1-0 lead until the the 52:00 mark, when Pacific Lutheran evened the score with an assisted goal. The Missionaries responded just three minutes later, however. Mckenzie Hoffman took a rebound off the PLU goalie and scored her eighth goal of the season. In the 71st minute of the game, PLU tied it up at 2-2 with an unassisted goal. Whitman was able to take the lead again, however, on a Katey Schmitz goal in the 75th minute of the game. Schmitz's goal, her first of the season, was assisted by Sammie Arthur. With under five minutes to play, though, the Lutes were awarded a penalty kick. The kick was good, sending the match into overtime. PLU ended the game in the 107th minute. Whitman goalie Rena Parcells blocked the initial shot, but left an open net for the rebound, which was put back in.

"It was a great day with good opportunities," Whitman coach Scott Shields said, "we just weren’t able to protect the lead."

Playing in their final home game were five Missionaries: Kaitlin Varady, Meghan Bowen, Sara Weihmann, Lindsay Gore and Rena Parcells. Coach Shields acknowledged the effort of the five players, "These five seniors have helped the program tremendously in their time here."

The team travels to Linfield College on Saturday and Willamette University Sunday for their next games in Northwest Conference play, and then finishes up the season at Whitworth on Wednesday November 8.

The Whitman women’s soccer team beat Linfield 3-2 in double overtime Saturday in McMinnville, Ore. Whitman improved their overall record to 10-7 and their record in the conference to 6-6. Linfield fell to 9-8 overall and 4-8 in the conference.

Sammie Arthur scored two goals, including the overtime winner. The two goals give Arthur 11 for the season, three of which are overtime game-winners. Whitman out shot Linfield 14-11, while Annie Owen recorded eight saves in goal for the Missionaries.

Linfield scored in the 21st minute of play to take a 1-0 lead. Jennifer Toy tied things up at 34:40 with a goal assisted by Lauren DeYoung. Under a minute later, though, the Wildcats regained the lead on as assisted goal. Linfield held the lead until Arthur scored her first goal of the match in the 73rd minute. The game remained tied until the second overtime, when Arthur knocked in the game-winner. Both of Arthur's goals were assisted by Sara Weihmann.

"This was a great game for us," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "We finally had a full roster, and we were able to play everbody today."

Whitman has two remaining games on the schedule, both on the road. Sunday they will travel to Willamette, and then next weekend they wrap up the season at Whitworth.

The Whitman women's soccer team lost 1-0 in double overtime to Willamette Sunday in Salem, Ore. Whitman's record is now 10-8 overall and 6-7 in the conference. Willamette, ranked 15th in the nation, improved its record to 15-1-2 overall and 10-1-2 in conference.

This was the second double overtime game for the Missionaries on the weekend. Willamette won the match on a score from 25 yards out that skipped through a crowd of defenders in the 103rd minute. Both teams had their chances to win the game earlier with several shots hitting off the post. The Loggers finished with eight shots on goal while the Missionaries shot on goal seven times.

"This was a great game to be a part of," Whitman coach Scott Shields said, "especially when youc an take one of the best teams in the nation into double overtime."

Rena Parcells had seven saves in goal for the Missionaries. On offense, Whitman totaled 12 shots. Mckenzie Hoffman led the way with two shots goal. Kara Mackenzie, Katey Schmitz, Lauren DeYoung, Jennifer Toy and Sara Weihmann each had one shot on goal.

Whitman finishes up the season on the road on next Saturday as they travel to Spokane, Wash. to play rival Whitworth.

The Whitman women’s soccer team lost to No. 23 Whitworth College 2-0 in Spokane, Wash. on Saturday. Whitman finishes the season with a 10-8 record overall and 6-8 in the Northwest Conference. Whitworth finishes its season with a 14-5 overall record and 9-5 in the conference.

Whitworth scored in the 16th minute and the 64th minute in winning the match 2-0. Both teams had four shots in the first half, and in the second half Whitworth out shot the Missionaries 5-2. The Missionaries had 6 shots for the game. Mckenzie Hofffman and Sammie Arthur led the way with one shot on goal each.

This was the final game for seniors Rena Parcells, Kaitlin Varady, Meghan Bowen, Sara Weihmann and Lindsey Gore.
