WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- For a second consecutive season, Whitman tennis standouts Tim Mullin and Paula Vizcaino have been named Northwest Conference Players of the Year. The latest awards were announced as the NWC Championships came to a close today in Yakima, Wash.
Mullin, a senior, and Vizcaino, a sophomore, were selected for back-to-back honors in a vote of conference coaches.
Mullin, ranked No. 3 in singles in the West Region of NCAA Div. III, didn't lose a match to NWC opponents during the regular season. He finally lost a three-set decision in a wind-swept semifinal match during the conference championships. It was his first loss in NWC action in two seasons.
Mullin, a graduate of Sprague High School in Salem, Ore., set a new Whitman school record for career victories earlier in the season. He passed 1988 graduate Dave Olafsson, who had racked up 138 victories in singles and doubles during his players days at Whitman.
Vizcaino, a graduate of Tecnologico de Monterrey in Toluca, Mexico, has lost one singles match against NWC opponents during her two seasons at Whitman. That loss came late this spring in a match in which she suffered ankle and foot injuries.
Vizcaino is ranked No. 5 in singles in the West Region of NCAA Div. III.
Mullin and Vizcaino earned the Player of the Year awards because they received the highest vote totals in balloting for the all-conference teams. Both Whitman players earned First Team All-NWC honors.
Mullin also was named the men's Sportsman of the Year award in the NWC for a second straight season. Mullin shared that award last year with a player from Whitworth College.
One other Whitman player, junior Trevor Gamble, earned Second Team All-NWC honors. Gamble is a graduate of Menlo School in Atherton, Calif.
