WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Tyler Chisholm and Pat Flanagan, a pair of senior defenders on the Whitman College men's soccer team, have been named to the Academic All-District Team.
Chisholm and Flanagan are two of 11 players elected to represent the College Division in District VIII, which includes all NAIA and NCAA Div. II and Div. III schools in the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, Hawaii, California, Utah, Nevada and Arizona, as well as British Columbia.
Players on all-district teams from around the nation are eligible for election to the Academic All-America Team. That voting will take place later this month.
Chisholm, a graduate of Lake City High School in Couer d'Alene, Idaho, and Flanagan, a graduate of Monroe High School in Snohomish, Wash., are both majoring in biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology at Whitman. Both plan to attend medical school after graduating from Whitman next spring.
Chisholm, a senior team captain this season, earned Northwest Conference (NWC) recognition as a junior (honorable mention) and as a sophomore (second team). Earlier this season, he was named NWC Defensive Player of the Week after Whitman's defense did not allow a single shot in a 5-0 victory over Cascade College.
Following his sophomore year at Whitman, Chisholm worked as a summer intern at Coeur d'Alene's Kootenai Medical Center. His volunteer activities have ranged from serving as a Whitman Mentor at Walla Walla elementary schools to helping with the Walla Walla Campfire organization.
Flanagan received an internship last summer to work as a laboratory technician in Washington, D.C., with Dr. Victor Lobanenkov, a primary investigator for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. Flanagan is writing his senior thesis on the molecular biology research he did last summer in relation to the protein CTCF and several types of cancer. He may continue his research with Dr. Lobanenkov next summer, postponing medical school for one year.
While at Whitman, Flanagan has volunteered in Walla Walla in a physician's office, hospital emergency room, and hospice program. He also volunteered at a Group Health Cooperative hospital in Seattle.
Flanagan, who has a Whitman grade point average of 3.699 on a 4.0 scale, is the son of Thomas Flanagan of Woodinville, Wash., and Edie Johnson of Bellevue, Wash.
Chisholm, who has a Whitman grade point average of 3.681, is the son of Dr. Ron and Robin Chisholm of Coeur d'Alene. His younger sister Hillary is a sophomore defender on the women's soccer team at Whitman.
