Northwest Conference Championships

Third/Fourth Place Match: Whitman 5, Lewis & Clark 4
Yakima Tennis Club, Yakima, Wash.
Saturday, April 19

Seeded No. 4 to start the Northwest Conference Championships, the Whitman women's tennis team pulled an upset on Saturday's final day of competition, knocking off No. 2-seeded Lewis & Clark 5-4 to claim third place.

Playing at the Yakima Tennis Club, the young Missionaries won two of three matches in doubles and then split the six singles matches -- despite losing two players to injury.

"It was a great way for a young team to end its season," Whitman coach Heidi Tate said.

Winners in singles for the Missionaries were sophomore Hannah Swee at No. 2, first-year player Elizabeth Claxton at No. 4, and sophomore Jessica Antilla at No. 6. Swee and Claxton captured three-set battles, while Antilla was an easy winner as a fill-in for sophomore Katy Newhouse. Both Newhouse and Jenny Spears, another sophomore, were unable to play because of sore wrists.

Marta Jankowska, another of Whitman's first-year players, nearly picked off a victory at No. 5 singles, losing her third set 6-4.

With the match starting with doubles play, Spears teamed with Claxton for an 8-6 victory at No. 2. Senior Christina Jesaitis and junior Molly Mayes wee 8-1 winners at No. 3 doubles.

In something of a surprise, Mayes was voted by conference coaches to the All-NWC First Team. Mayes, who was undefeated in conference play last year at No. 4 singles, managed relatively few victories this season playing at No. 1 singles, replacing teammate Paola Vizcaino. A two-time Player of the Year, Vizcaino is on foreign study this spring in Paris, France.

"The vote by coaches was indicative of the respect everyone has for Molly and the way she plays the game," Tate said.

Swee, who played No. 2 and No. 3 singles this season, was named to the All-NWC Second Team. Swee finished with a 7-4 singles record against conference opponents.
