Northwest Conference Championships

First Round: Whitman 7, Lewis & Clark 0
West Valley High School, Yakima, Wash.
Friday, April 18

There were no surprises this morning as the Whitman men's tennis team swept to a 7-0 victory over Lewis & Clark in the opening round of the Northwest Conference Men's Tennis Championships in Yakima, Wash.

Playing at West Valley High School, the Missionaries picked off the doubles point by sweeping the three matches in doubles.

Sophomore Brad Changstrom and juniors Ye-San Lin and Gaurav Garg were easy winners in singles, losing no more than two games in any one set. Senior Graham Sumioka also had a relatively easy match, winning 6-1, 7-5.

In the top two spots, senior Trevor Gamble and junior Sam Spiegel needed three sets to finish off their opponents. Because the match outcome had already been decided, the top two singles matches were decided by a 10-point tie-breaker rather a full third set. Gamble, now 10-2 this spring against NWC opponents, won a 10-6 decision in his third-set tie-breaker. Spiegel, who upped his conference mark to 10-0, was a 10-3 winner in his tie-breaker.

The shutout victory was Whitman's second this season at Lewis & Clark's expense.

Seeded No. 3 in the tournament, Whitman advances to a 2 p.m. second round match at the Yakima Tennis Club. Depending on other results this morning, the Missionaries will probably play either Linfield or Pacific Lutheran, the top two seeds.

Yakima Tennis Club, Yakima, Wash.
Friday, April 18

The Whitman men's tennis team was no match for Pacific Lutheran Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Northwest Conference Men's Tennis Championships at the Yakima Tennis Club. The Lutes powered their way to a 7-0 shutout to advance to Saturday's title match against defending champ Linfield.

"PLU played a great match, up and down its line-up," Whitman coach Jeff Northam said. "We obviously didn't play our best match of the season, but we didn't play a bad match either. They just took it to us."

Sophomore Brad Changstrom nearly notched a point for the Missionaries in the No. 3 singles match. After Changstrom and PLU's Martin Uylangco split the first two sets, Uylangco took the abbreviated third set on a 10-5 tie-breaker.

Northwest Conference Championships

Third/Fourth Place Match: Whitman 6, Whitworth 1
Yakima Tennis Club, Yakima, Wash.
Saturday, April 19

The Whitman men's tennis team wrapped up its season in impressive fashion Saturday morning, steamrolling Whitworth 6-1 to claim third place at the Northwest Conference Men's Tennis Championships at the Yakima Tennis Club.

The Missionaries also made a good showing in terms of season-ending awards. Senior Trevor Gamble and junior Sam Spiegel were named to the All-NWC First Team, while sophomore Brad Changstrom earned Second Team honors. Gamble also was named NWC Sportsman of the Year, an award that Whitman's Tim Mullin (now graduated) won the two previous years.

Whitman swept the three doubles matches to start Saturday's finale against Whitworth. At No. 2 doubles, Spiegel and senior Graham Sumioka gained a measure of revenge with an 8-4 victory over Justin Swanson and Stephen Hannaman, a team to which they had lost twice earlier in the season.

Gamble, Spiegel, Changstrom, junior Ye-San Lin and senior Evan Chiang all posted straight-set victories for the Missionaries in singles. Chiang, filling in for Gaurav Garg, claimed the match-clinching victory in winning at No. 6 singles. Garg sprained an ankle in Friday's match against Pacific Lutheran.

Playing No. 1 singles, Gamble finished his senior season with an 11-3 record against NWC opponents. Spiegel concluded his junior campaign with an 11-1 NWC record at No. 2 singles. Playing mostly at No. 3 singles, Changstrom was 10-4 against conference opponents.
