WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- After receiving Northwest Conference honorable mention recognition in each of her first two seasons with the Whitman College women's soccer team, junior defender Meghan Bowen has been named this fall to the All-NWC First Team.
Meanwhile, first-year forward McKenzie Hoffman received All- NWC Second Team honors after leading the Missionaries in scoring in her first collegiate season.
Bowen (Bellevue, Wash. / Newport HS) was one of only three defenders named to the 13-player first team.
"Megan has been the backbone of our defense the past three years," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "The team respects her ablities enough that she has been captain of the team since her sophomore season. She is one of our strongest, most fit and best skilled players, and she deserves all the awards that come her way. She started every game this past year and played all but about 20 minutes of the entire season."
Hoffman (Redmond, Wash. / Eastlake HS) finished the season with eight goals and one assist. Five of her goals came in two games against Pacific Lutheran. She booted a hat trick in a 4-3 victory over Lutes and had two more in a 3-2 Whitman loss. Hoffman also scored two goals in a 4-2 Missionary triumph over Montana State-Billings.
Hoffman is the third member of her family to play soccer at Whitman. Older brother Nate Hoffman, a defender on the men's team this fall, had four goals and two assists in capping his senior season. Damian Hoffman, the oldest sibling in the family, also played on the men's team before graduating in the spring of 1999.
Although McKenzie Hoffman led the Missionary women in goals scored this fall, two teammates were close behind. Lauren DeYoung (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit HS), a first-year midfielder, had seven goals and three assists. Sophomore Katey Schmitz (Medina, Wash. / Bellevue, Wash.), slowed by injury to start the season, finished with seven goals and one assist.
Senior Julia Makowski (Boulder, Colo., HS) added four goals and four assists to the Whitman offense, which scored 37 goals on the season, two more goals than it surrendered in 18 games.
Anne Owen (Bozeman, Mont. / Taft School, Watertown, Cont.), Whitman's first-year goalkeeper posted four shutouts during the season, averaging 5.44 saves per game.
