The women's doubles competition also begins on Sunday.
Whitman's Molly Mayes and Christina Jesaitis won their first two doubles matches Saturday, knocking off seeded opponents, to advance to Sunday's semifinals in the Pacific Northwest Small College Championships, which are being hosted by the Missionary tennis teams.
Mayes, a freshman, and Jesaitis, a sophomore playing her first season of collegiate tennis, opened with an 8-6 victory over Pacific Lutheran's Whitney Freed and Whitney Madison, the No. 6 seed in the women's doubles bracket. The Missionary duo then used the same score to skip past the fourth-seeded team, Laura Simmons and Jennifer Wright of Lewis-Clark State College (LCSC). In one of Sunday's semifinals, Mayes and Jesaitis will face top-seeded Janet Nel and Jinnie Shrestha of LCSC.
In singles action Saturday, both Mayes and Whitman senior Joanna Cutler advanced to the quarterfinals before losing.
