WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Corinne Schuler, a senior captain on the women's soccer team at Whitman College, has earned All-Northwest Conference honors for the third consecutive season. One of her teammates, freshman Meghan Bowen, received honorable mention recognition.
Schuler (Hacienda Heights CA, Wilson HS), a 5-foot-5 midfielder known for her creative and aggressive style of play, was named to the second team for a second straight year. Schuler made the honorable mention squad as a sophomore.
"Corinne is very deserving of any award she receives," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "Season after season, she was always ready to play. She has been one of our toughest competitors, even though she was one of our smallest players in terms of physical stature."
Schuler was more than "just" a team captain during the past season, Shields added. "She's been a true leader for us. Her spirit, leadership and playing ability will be missed a great deal."
Shields describes Bowen (Bellevue WA, Newport HS), a 5-foot-5 defender, as the "freshman who became a captain."
As a first-year player, Bowen wasn't voted into a captain's role at the start of the season, Shields said. "As the season progressed, though, Meghan was one of the people who helped hold this team together during the tough times."
"Megan expects a lot of herself and a lot from her teammates," Shields said. "It is a true honor being voted to the all-conference team as a freshman, and Meghan deserves it. We're lucky to have her as part of our team for the next few years. She is definitely one of our building blocks on defense."
