Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) scored a pair of quick goals with ten minutes left in the game and posted a 4-2 non-conference victory over the Whitman men's soccer action Saturday afternoon on Ankeny Field. The game was Whitman's first of the season. NNC raised its season record to 1-2.
NNU led 1-0 at halftime and upped its advantage to 2-0 11 minutes into the second half. Whitman cut its deficit to 2-1 in the 69th minute when sophomore Loren Anderson scored with an assist from freshman Calder Hughes.
Whitman continued to press its attack for several minutes and came close to converting scoring opportunities that would have tied the score. With just under 10 minutes left to play, however, NNU counterattacked and scored a quick goal to move ahead 3-1. Less than 90 seconds later, the Crusaders scored again to move in front 4-1.
Whitman senior Rob Tonnsen pulled the Missionaries to within 4-2 with an unassisted goal with three minutes left to play. Scoring off a direct kick, Tonnsen hooked his shot to the right side of a four-man NNU defensive front and then dropped the ball over the keeper's head.
"Northwest Nazarene is a good team, and our boys felt they competed well and outplayed them at times," Whitman coach Mike Washington said. "Every now and then, we had some lapses, though, and we got punished for it."
Washington attributed the loss in part to his team's youth. In addition to freshmen goalkeepers Travis Extrom and Nathan Davis, who split time in goal, seven other freshmen saw significant playing time.
"Had we been able to score our second goal when it was still 2-1, then we may have pulled it out," Washington said. "But when you play from behind, you have to take risks and push everyone forward. That's when you can get caught at the other end, and that's what happened with their two goals late in the game."
Scoring:
37:28 - NNU: Jerry Keating, assist Chris Pinkerton.
55:50 - NNU: Coe Michaelson, assist Scott Strobel, Jeff Glasenapp.
69:00 - Whitman: Loren Anderson, assist Calder Hughes.
80:21 - NNU: Coe Michaelson, assist Jeremy Klosterman.
81:44 - NNU: Justin Metzger, assist Jose Limon.
87:25 - Whitman: Rob Tonnsen, unassisted, direct kick.
After falling behind 3-1 in the first half to the Gonzaga University junior varsity Sunday afternoon on Ankeny Field, the Whitman men's soccer team battled the Bulldogs on even terms through a scoreless second half.
Because the game involved a junior varsity team, however, the 3-1 loss does not count on Whitman's season won-loss record.
After giving up three goals in the first 40 minutes of play, Whitman got its only goal in the 42nd minute of the first half. Freshman Ross Good scored his first collegiate goal with an assist by a second Missionary freshman, Charlie Schneider.
Despite the loss, Whitman played its best game of the young season, coach Mike Washington said. With only four returning starters in their lineup, the Missionaries are "still in the learning stage," Washington added.
Neither side was able to score in the second half, and the play was physical at times, resulting in two yellow cards for Whitman and three for Gonzaga.
Sidelined during Whitman's first game by a bad knee, Whitman keeper Joe Capp started his third season in goal with nine saves on 19 Gonzaga shots.
Scoring:
15:00 - Gonzaga: Jason Cooper, assist Mike McCarthy
Shots - Gonzaga 19, Whitman 11
Saves - Gonzaga: Mike McCarthy 1, Joe Smith 2; Whitman: Joe Capp, 9
Corner kicks - Gonzaga 6, Whitman 1
Playing its third game in three days, the Whitman College men's soccer team posted a 3-1 victory over Ricks College Monday on Ankeny Field.
The Missionaries led 1-0 at halftime on the strength of a goal by senior Dan Millikan in the 30th minute of play. Sophomore Eli Quisenberry had the assist.
Ricks, a two-year school of 8,500 students in Rexburg, Idaho, evened the score at 1-1 with a goal 22 minutes into the second half. Whitman sophomore Scott Burns responded with a pair of goals during a seven-minute span, however, to clinch the victory for the Missionaries. Freshmen Dave Andresen and Ross Good assisted on the two goals.
le happy with the win, Whitman coach Mike Washington said it wasn't his team's best effort of the weekend. "The win we'll take, but the performance as a whole was not so good," Washington said. "We came out slow."
The victory doesn't count on Whitman's season record because Ricks is a two-year school.
The Missionaries play just one nonconference game next weekend, traveling Sunday, Sept. 12, to play Albertson College in Caldwell, Idaho. Washington said his team needs to work on "finishing a drive, on possessing the ball and not turning it over."
Freshman Ross Good scored his first official goal and the Whitman men's soccer team evened its season record at 1-1 with a 1-0 shutout of Albertson College Sunday afternoon in Caldwell, Idaho.
"This was a very good defensive performance for Whitman," coach Mike Washington said. "I was really, really happy with the determination showed by our players. It was a balanced game, back and forth, but we had a gutsy effort and found a way to win."
Junior goalkeeper Joe Capp spearheaded Whitman's defensive effort, recording eight saves against 22 Albertson shots. The loss was Albertson's first of the season against two victories.
The game was scoreless until the 65th minute when Whitman freshman Billy Pryme-Fuld stole the ball and scooted a pass up the field Good. After eluding one defender, Good fired a 20-yard shot from the corner of the box, placing it just inside the far post, past the dive of Coyote goalkeeper Jake Steele.
In two non-counting games earlier this season against a two-year college and the junior varsity of a four-year school, Good had scored one goal and added an assist.

The Whitman College men's soccer team bumped its season won-loss record to 2-1 with a 2-1 nonconference victory over Evergreen State College Friday night in Pasco, Wash.
Originally scheduled as a home game for Whitman, the game was moved to the Tri-Cities Youth Soccer Association complex to accommodate Evergreen State's travel schedule.
Whitman coach Mike Washington said his controlled play, particularly in the second half, after adapting to Evergreen State's offsides trap.
The Missionaries took the lead for good near the end of the first half when freshman Ross Good (Mukilteo WA, Kamiak HS) scored on a fastbreak with an assist from senior Rob Tonnsen (Billings MT, Billings HS).
As Whitman dominated play in the second half, Tonnsen scored an unassisted goal to extend the Missionary lead to 2-1.
Evergreen tallied its only goal with eight minutes left to play.
Whitman outshot Evergreen 20 to 12, and the final score might have been more lopsided had the Missionaries not misfired on four excellent scoring opportunities.
Missionary freshman goalkeeper Travis Exstrom (Redmond WA, Redmond HS) had four saves in the first half. Senior Joe Capp (Yakima Wa, Davis HS) took over in the second half and had one save.

In a defensive struggle in which neither side took many shots on goal, the Whitman men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Warner Pacific College Saturday afternoon in Portland. The loss evened Whitman's season record at 2-2.
Warner Pacific led 1-0 at halftime, after scoring in the 38th minute of play. Whitman freshman Calder Hughes (Portland OR, Lincoln HS), assisted by freshman Dave Andresen (Kent WA, Kentridge HS), scored with 20 minutes to play in the second half to knot the score at 1-1. One minute later, however, Warner Pacific scored again and that proved to be the game winner.
Whitman coach Mike Washington said Warner Pacific regained its lead quickly because the Missionaries seemed to let down their guard after tying the score. While his players controlled a fair amount of the play overall, Washington said, they seemed mentally tired in the wake of Friday evening's victory over Evergreen State. Warner Pacific also defended its leads very strongly, he added.
The game featured just eight shots on goal by Whitman and six by Warner Pacific.
Warner Pacific College 1 - 1 -- 2
Whitman College 0 - 1 -- 1
A strong game by Whitman goalkeeper Joe Capp (Yakima WA, Davis HS) wasn't enough to keep the Missionaries from dropping a 3-0 decision to Whitworth Wednesday on Ankeny Field.
The game was the Northwest Conference opener for both schools. Whitman fell to 2-3 on the season. Whitworth upped its season mark to 5-2.
Whitworth took a 1-0 lead when Brendan Siefken scored in the 13th minute of play. After intermission, the Pirates extended their lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute of play. Whitworth added its third goal with just five minutes left in the game.
Capp, Whitman's junior goalie, made 11 saves to keep the Missionaries in the game most of the way.
Whitman coach Mike Washington said his young team made a series of mistakes that allowed Whitworth to maintain control of the game. The Missionaries will concentrate on correcting those deficiencies, Washington said, before resuming conference play this weekend.

Rebounding from a loss on Saturday, the Whitman College men s soccer team shut out George Fox University 3-0 Sunday afternoon on Ankeny Field.
The Missionaries scored all three of their goals in the first half to set the stage for their first Northwest Conference win. Whitman is now 1-2 in conference and 3-4 on the season. George Fox fell to 0-2 in the NWC and 2-5 overall.
Whitman freshman Calder Hughes (Portland OR, Lincoln HS) booted his third goal of the season in Sunday's 15th minute of play to get the Missionaries on the scoreboard. Charlie Schneider (Davis CA, Davis HS), also a freshman, had the assist.
A third Missionary freshman, Ross Good (Mukilteo WA, Kamiak HS), gave Whitman a 2-0 lead in the 29th minute with an assist from sophomore Scott Burns (Redding CA, Enterprise HS). The score also gives Good three goals on the season.
Burns and Good switched roles for Whitman s final goal in the 36th minute of the first half when Burns scored off an assist from Good.
Two Whitman goalkeepers shared the shutout. Freshman Travis Extrom (Redmond WA, Redmond HS) played the first half before senior Joe Capp (Yakima Wa, Davis HS) played the final 45 minutes. Extrom and Capp had four saves each.
Whitman coach Mike Washington was very happy with his team s strong effort and performance. The team needed today s win after yesterday s loss, he said.

Unable to hold an early 1-0 lead, the Whitman College men's soccer team lost to Northwest Conference rival Linfield College 2-1 Saturday afternoon in McMinnville, Ore. The loss dropped the Missionaries to 1-3 in conference and 3-5 overall. Linfield moved to 3-1 in conference 7-3 on the season.
The Missionaries took a 1-0 lead into halftime after freshman Charlie Schneider (Davis CA, Davis HS) snuck through a crack in the Wildcat defense to score in the 42nd minute of play. But Shanon Hopkins scored a pair of second-half goals to give the host Wildcats the victory.
Whitman got a strong effort from its defensive unit and some excellent saves by senior goalkeeper Garth Giles (Portland OR, Cleveland HS). Giles had 10 saves.
Whitman coach Mike Washington "was quite pleased with the way we performed as a team, especially on the defensive end."
Whitman 1 - 0 -- 1
Linfield 0 - 2 -- 2
The Whitman College men's soccer team sparkled again on defense Sunday afternoon against Willamette University, but it wasn't enough to keep the Missionaries from losing their second 2-1 Northwest Conference decision in two days.
The visiting Missionaries jumped ahead in the 10th minute of play when sophomore workhorse Scott Burns (Redding CA, Enterprise HS) scored with an assist from freshman Ross Good (Mukilteo WA, Kamiak HS). But Willamette pulled even a few minutes later and then scored what proved to be the winning goal two minutes into the second half.
Whitman's record now stands at 1-4 in conference and 3-6 overall. The Bearcats bumped their record to 3-1-1 in league and 6-5-2 on the season.
Whitman coach Mike Washington was encouraged by his team's second straight strong showing on defense. Freshmen goalkeepers Travis Exstrom (Issaquah WA, Redmond HS) and Nathan Davis (Higganum CT, Haddam-Killingworth HS) combined for nine saves while allowing just two goals on 26 Willamette shot attempts.
"I was very pleased with our defensive effort again today," Washington said. "We were able to hold two quality teams to two goals apiece this weekend. Scoring first like we did today was huge for our confidence."

It was a rough weekend in Tacoma for the Whitman College men's soccer team. The Missionaries lost a pair of Northwest Conference games, falling 3-0 Saturday at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) and 4-0 Sunday at the University of Puget Sound (UPS).
UPS, which has allowed just seven goals all season, remains atop the conference with a 6-1 record, 12-1 overall. Whitman is now 3-8 on the season and 1-6 in NWC games. PLU ended the weekend 2-4-1 in conference and 3-6-2 for the season.
Junior goalkeeper Joe Capp (Yakima WA, Davis HS) made a good showing for one of its weekend bright spots. Capp played the entire game in goal against the Loggers and recorded a whopping 12 saves to help keep the Missionaries close. "Capp was absolutely tremendous in goal for us against UPS," Whitman coach Mike Washington said.
"We had a few bright spots against UPS," Washington added, "but we weren't able to attack them much on offense. They kept us on our heels for most of the day."
Whitman trailed UPS 1-0 at the half but was unable to score against a staunch Logger defense that has yet to allow a goal in October. Whitman was outshot in the game 31-13.
Washington was less pleased with his team's performance Saturday. "I think we are a better team than PLU," Washington said, "but we weren't prepared mentally and they took advantage of that."
PLU scored all three of its goals in a 20-minute stretch on two scores from senior Cody Johnson (Kirkland WA, Lake Washington HS) and a goal by Philip Lund, a graduate student from Oslo, Norway. Lund has junior standing as an athlete.

The Whitman College men came within a few minutes Saturday afternoon of sweeping their season series with George Fox University.
After beating the Bruins 3-0 earlier this season on Ankeny Field, the Missionaries held a 2-1 lead with two minutes left to play in Saturday's rematch in Newberg, Oregon. But that's when George Fox got a game-tying goal from Greg Lutze, the first of his collegiate career, to send the game into overtime. Then, 12 mintues later, the Bruins completed a 3-2 comeback victory when Merrick Brownlee notched his second goal of the game to seal the win.
"We had some defensive miscommunication in the game and it escalated in overtime," Whitman coach Mike Washington said. "We played very poorly on defensive today. We should have played much better as a team on defense, but we didn't and that's the way things go with a young team."
Whitman took the early lead when freshman Ross Good (Mukilteo WA, Kamiak HS) scored his fourth goal of the season in the 18th minute of the first half. He was assisted by senior Rob Tonnsen (Billings MT, Billings HS).
George Fox countered with its first goal two minutes later to even the score at 1-1. The Missionaries regained the lead near the end of the first half when sophomore Scott Burns (Redding CA, Enterprise HS) booted his third goal of the season. It was unassisted.
Whitman keeper Joe Capp (Yakima WA, Davis HS) made seven saves on 26 George Fox shots. "Joe Capp was trememdous in goal once again," Washington said. Capp suffered a late-game injury, however, and was listed as doubtful for Sunday's game.

With its regular goalkeeper sidelined by injury, the Whitman College men's soccer team lost 3-0 at Pacific University Sunday afternoon in Forest Grove, Oregon.
The Missionaries shifted into a defensive mode Sunday in efforts to compensate for the loss of goalie Joe Capp (Yakima WA, Davis HS), who was hurt late in Saturday's game at George Fox University. Olaf Lakin (Minneapolis MN, South HS), who normally plays midfielder, replaced Capp in goal.
Given Lakin's relative inexperience as a goalkeeper, Whitman's basic strategy focused on keeping the Boxers away from Whitman's goal, and to "hold them off as long as possible," Missionary coach Mike Washington said.
The strategy worked for a time and Whitman trailed by just one goal, 1-0, at the halftime break. The Boxers added a pair of goals midway through the second half, however, to clinch the win.
With the loss, Whitman dropped to 1-8 in the Northwest Conference and 3-10 on the season. Pacific improved its record to 5-3-1 in conference and 8-5-2 overall.

Playing strong defense until its offense got untracked, the Whitman men's soccer team knocked off Willamette 3-1 Saturday afternoon on Ankeny Field. The young Missionaries hiked their record to 4-10 on the season and 2-8 in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats fell to 4-4-2 in confence and 8-8-2 overall.
Following a scoreless first half, Willamette scored in the game's 60th minute to lead 1-0. But the Missionaries bounced back eight minutes later on senior Rob Tonnsen's unassisted goal. That goal was the game's turning point, noted Whitman coach Mike Washington, because it switched the momentum in the home team's favor.
Freshman Loren Anderson gave Whitman a 2-1 lead with 17 minutes left to play, scoring off an assist from senior Dan Millian.
Another freshman, Charlie Schneider, iced the victory with Whitman's third goal with two minutes left on the clock. Freshman Dave Andresen assisted on the play.
Led by sophomore Eli Quisenberry and freshman Scott Kilpatrick, the defense was "very good, very solid," Washington said.
Whitman senior goalkeeper Garth Giles picked up 11 saves on 14 Willamette shots.

One day after cruising to a 3-1 victory over Willamette University, the Whitman College men's soccer team lost its momentum and a 3-1 decision to Linfield College Sunday afternoon on Ankeny Field.
The Missionaries started Sunday's game without the intensity necessary to turn back Linfield's offensive attack, Whitman coach Mike Washington said. The Wildcats took advantage with three goals to lead 3-0 at half.
Whitman turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, but the offense wasn't able to overcome the early deficit. Whitman's Olaf Lakin (Minneapolis MN, South HS) scored in the 86th with an assist from Rob Tonnsen (Billings MT, Billings HS).
Whitman goalkeeper, freshman Travis Exstrom (Issaquah WA, Redmond HS) had a good showing with 13 saves.

The University of Puget Sound solidified its hold on first place in the Northwest Conference with a 3-0 victory over the Whitman men's soccer team Friday afternoon on Ankeny Field.
"If you make mistakes against a good team, they will capitalize on it," Whitman coach Mike Washington said. "This is exactly what happened today. UPS is a very good team."
Despite its mistakes, two of which led directly to UPS goals, Whitman "showed spirit battling throughout the game," Washington said.
Eli Quisenberry (Juneau AK / Juneau-Douglas HS) sparked Whitman's defense, shutting down the Loggers' leading scorer. While the Missionaries failed to score, Charlie Schneider (Davis CA / Davis HS) spearheaded the Missionary attack.

The Whitman men's soccer team survived a hard-fought Northwest Conference battle with Pacific Lutheran University in posting a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon on Ankeny Field.
Whitman's Eli Quisenberry (Juneau AK, Juneau-Douglas HS, assisted by Nate Hoffman (Redmond WA, Eastlake HS), scored the game's only goal in the 34th minute of play.
"It feels good to come back after a loss yesterday and win today," Whitman coach Mike Washington said.
Washington commended his players for "not getting sucked into" PLU's physical-style of play. "We were able to battle through it and come away with the win."
Scott Kilpatrick (Redmond WA, Eastlake HS) played a strong defensive game for the Missionaries, Washington noted. Goalie Garth Giles (Portland OR, Cleveland HS) made eight saves for Whitman.
Whitman raised its record to 3-10 in conference and 5-12 on the season. The Missionaries conclude their season next Saturday at Whitworth College in Spokane.
