WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman College sophomore Adam Heyd won his first collegiate golf tournament Thursday and Friday in the Tacoma, Wash., area.
The 36-hole Erv Marlow Jr. Collegiate Golf Tournament began Thursday at the Lake Spanaway Golf Course and concluded Friday at the Fircrest Golf Club.
Heyd shot a 2-over-par 73 on Thursday to share the first-round lead with Zac Thorpe of Pacific Lutheran University. Heyd shot a 76 on his second round to finish with two-day total of 149, three shots in front of his nearest competitor.
"Adam played well both rounds," Whitman golf coach Peter McClure said. "He started well both days, ran into trouble on a few holes near the end of each round, and then finished strong enough to win. It was great to see Adam win his first college tournament."
Whitman freshman Andy Knapp (Camas WA, Camas HS) shot a 76 on Thursday and was among the opening round leaders. Knapp faded to an 86 on Friday, however, to finish back in the pack at 162.
Another Whitman freshman, Erik Scott (Port Orchard WA, South Kitsap HS), shot an 82 Friday to finish at 166.
