Senior Akshay Shetty, freshman Tim Mullin and junior Eric Bartee led the Whitman men to a strong showing in the first-ever Pacific Northwest Small College Championships, which the Missionaries hosted Oct. 2-4 at the Bratton Tennis Center.
Following a first-round bye in the singles bracket, Shetty won three straight matches before losing to Dermot O'Grady of Lewis-Clark State College (LCSC) in the title match. Mullin also won three matches before losing to O'Grady in the semifinals.
Bartee just missed giving Whitman a third player in the semifinals. He was two points from winning his quarterfinal match before losing to Peter Lunoe of Pacific Lutheran University in a third-set tie-breaker.
Haroon Ullah, Clifford Mah, Bryan Oliver and Rick Smith also won first-round matches for the Missionaries, and Owen Bargreen advanced to the second round by default. In the consolation singles bracket, Mah and Smith advanced to the semifinals before losing.
In the doubles bracket, Shetty and Oliver lost 7-6, 6-2 in the semifinals to LCSC's Tony Hunt and Dermot O'Grady, the eventual doubles champions. Whitman's Haroon Ullah and Charlie Larson benefited from a first-round bye before losing to Hunt and O'Grady in the quarterfinals. Nick Dupuis and Rick Smith also lost in the quarterfinals after winning their first-round match.
In addition to Pacific Lutheran and LCSC, other schools with players in the tournament were the University of Puget Sound and Willamette University.
Freshman Tim Mullin won his opening round singles match and teamed with Eric Bartee to win a first-round doubles match as Whitman competed in the ITA NCAA Division III western regional tournament at Claremont-McKenna College. Bartee and Akshay Shetty, after losing their first matches in singles, advanced to the consolation semifinals before being eliminated. Bryan Oliver benefited from first-round defaults or byes in both singles and doubles before being knocked from the tournament, which featured many of the best Division III players in the western United States.
In singles play, Mullin nipped Chris Ross of Pomona-Pitzer 6-4, 6-4 in the first round before losing 6-0, 6-1 to the University of Redlands' Seth Mikkelson, the tournament's sixth- seeded player. Dropping to the consolation bracket, Mullin then lost matches to Jerry Chou of Occidental and No. 7 seed Kris Burrell of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS).
Oliver advanced to the second round of singles play when Sal Gonzales of California Lutheran University defaulted. Oliver then lost 6-3, 6-1 to the tournament's second seed, Brian Cummings of the University of California-Santa Cruz (UCSC).
Shetty, who was seeded No. 15 in the tournament, lost his opening round match 6-2, 6-4 to Steve Marshburn of Redlands. Shetty bounced back with victories over the No. 10 seed, Kaiwen Cheng of CMS, and the No. 13 seed, Forbes Jonasson of Willamette University. In one of Sunday's consolation bracket semifinals, Shetty lost to Nick Cunningham of UCSC.
After an opening round 6-4, 6-1 loss to Chris Kan of CMS, Bartee rallied in the consolation bracket with victories over Josh Goldwyn of Pomona-Pitzer and Rob Price of CMS. Bartee's loss in Sunday's consolation semifinals was a 6-4, 6-4 decision at the hands of Vincent Darmohusodo of the University of California-San Diego.
In doubles play, Mullin and Bartee opened with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over James Song and Josh Goldwyn of Pomona-Pitzer. The Missionary were eliminated in the next round by the tournament's fourth-seeded doubles team, Peter Gladkin and Danny Kim of UCSC, but not before they put up a good fight. Mullin and Bartee won the first set in a 7-6 tiebreaker before Gladkin and Kim took the next two sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Shetty and Oliver took their first-round doubles match by default before losing to Kris Burrell and Brett Shepardson of CMS.
Both the University of California-Santa Cruz and the University of Redlands finished last season among the top six teams in the nation in NCAA Division III.
There were no surprises Thursday as the University of Montana, an NCAA Div. I school, rolled over the Whitman men 7-0 in the Bratton Tennis Center. Montana, one of the top teams in the Big Sky Conference in recent years, won all six singles matches and swept the three doubles matches. Whitman was playing its first dual match of the season.
Whitman played without freshman Tim Mullin, who had been expected to play a major role on the team. Mullin twisted his ankle in practice earlier in the week, tearing a ligament in his ankle and may be lost for the remainder of the season.
Haroon Ullah also succumbed to injury when he aggravated a previous knee injury midway through the second set of his match and was forced to retire. He status is listed as day-to-day.
Despite the injuries, there was a bright side for the men in the play of freshmen Rick Smith and Nick Dupuis. Head coach Jeff Northam said of the pair, "They both gave us great matches and will be excellent additions to this team."

Last year's NCAA Div. III national champions, the University of California at Santa Cruz, downed Whitman 7-0 Saturday night in the Bratton Tennis Center. Even though the score was lopsided, Whitman gave the Banana Slugs a battle, especially in three of the singles matches.
Playing against nationally ranked opponents, Whitman's Akshay Shetty in No. 1 singles and Eric Bartee in No. 2 singles split their first two sets before losing in the third. Shetty lost 6-4 in the third against the nation's 6th-ranked Division III player, while Bartee fell 6-3 in the third against the nation's 3rd-ranked player. Despite a week-long illness and having to prepare for his written comprehensive exams in his economics major, Shetty played his third singles match in as many days.
In No. 3 singles, Haroon Ullah lost 6-4, 7-5 against the nation's 2nd-ranked Division III player.
"I was extremely pleased with how hard the Whitties competed," Whitman coach Jeff Northam said. "I keep wondering how the match might have turned out with (injured) freshman standout Tim Mullin in the line-up."

The Missionaries grabbed their first win of the year by handing Whitworth a 7-0 drubbing Friday in the Bratton Tennis Center. The Missionaries lost only one set in the singles matches en route to the win in the first conference match of the season.
After Eric Bartee took the first set of the No. 2 singles match by a score of 6-3, Jon Wrigley battled back to take Whitworth's only set of the day 6-4. Bartee then cruised to the victory in the third 6-0. The only other match providing any suspense was the No. 1 match between Akshay Shetty and Mark Rice, which Shetty won 6-4, 7-6.
Whitworth mustered a victory at No. 2 doubles, but Whitman came out on top in the other twp doubles matches to claim the one team point available in doubles play.
"We took this match pretty easily but it certainly wasn't without drama," coach Jeff Northam said. "We played without three of our players for various reasons but we still managed to dominate. It is so nice to be loaded with 16 quality players."

The last time PLU lost a men's conference tennis match was during the Bush Administration at the hands of an earlier band of Whitman players, one of which was current Missionary coach Jeff Northam. The Lutes had won over 110 straight conference matches before losing Saturday at Bratton.
"This is a huge win for us," Northam said. "To end such a long winning streak and do it in the way that we did is big. We really dominated them today."
All three doubles matches were close with Whitman gaining the single match point winning two matches. Whitman seniors Haroon Ullah and Akshay Shetty grabbed the No. 1 doubles match 8-6, but PLU countered with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles. Eric Bartee and Bryan Oliver gave the Missionaries the last laught in doubles, winning the No. 3 match 9-7.

Whitman dropped only one singles match and one doubles match in earning the victory. The team's freshman once again came up big as Rick Smith won in straight sets at No. 5 singles and Nick Dupuis won in three sets at No. 6.

The Whitman men remained unbeaten against Northwest Conference opponents this season with a 4-3 victory over Pacific Lutheran Saturday afternoon in Tacoma, Wash. It was Whitman's second victory of the season over the Lutes, who had won 60 straight conference matches before losing to the Missionaries earlier this season in Walla Walla.
With Saturday's victory, Whitman elevated in conference record to 7-0, while PLU dropped to 8-2 in league action.
Akshay Shetty paced the Missionaries by winning his No. 1 singles match in three sets and teaming with Haroon Ullah to claim an 8-6 victory in No. 1 doubles. Shetty improved to 7-0 in the top singles spot against conference opponents, while Shetty and Ullah raised their No. 1 doubles record to 6-0 in conference play.
Saturday's match also marked the season debut of talented Whitman freshman Tim Mullin, who posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory in No. 2 singles and combined with Eric Bartee to take a 9-7 triumph in No. 3 doubles. Mullin, who was expected to be one of Whitman's top players this season, suffered an ankle injury the week before the season began.

After beating Pacific Lutheran University twice during the regular season, the Whitman men dropped a close 4-3 decision to the Lutes in the semifinals of the Northwest Conference championships Saturday in Portland, Oregon. Later in the day, PLU avenged a regular season loss to Willamette by edging the Bearcats 4-3 to claim the conference title. Meanwhile, in an abbreviated match for third and fourth place, Whitman juggled its normal lineup and lost 5-1 to the University of Puget Sound, a team it had beaten twice during the regular season by 6-1 scores.
As the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Whitman received a first-round bye and then knocked off the University of George Fox 6-1 last Friday's second-round of action. Akshay Shetty and Haroon Ullah, Whitman's No. 1 doubles team, remained undefeated in conference play with an 8-4 decision over their George Fox opponents. The Missionaries swept all three doubles matches, in fact, with Bryan Oliver and Clifford Mah winning 8-1 at No. 2 and Eric Bartee and Tim Mullin pitching an 8-0 shutout at No. 3.
Whitman won five of the six singles matches against George Fox, although Bartee at No. 3 and Mah at No. 4 needed three sets. Straight-set winners for the Missionaries were Tim Mullin, Curtis Haynie and Rick Smith.
In the semifinals, PLU won four of the six singles matches to notch its victory. In two cases, Lute players rebounded from first-set losses to win in three sets. Whitman scored its points in singles courtesy of Ullah, who won in three sets at No. 3. and Curtis Haynie, who won in straight sets at No. 6.
Whitman also won two of three doubles matches to claim the one team point available in doubles play. Shetty and Ullah won again at No. 1, extending their won-loss record to 10-0 against conference opponents and 15-4 on the season. Mullin and Bartee were also victors for Whitman in the No. 3 doubles match.
In Saturday's match for third and fourth place, with both teams anxious to return to their respective campuses, Whitman and Puget Sound played a single-set, pro format in the six singles matches. Neither Shetty or Ullah played for the Missionaries, and Rick Smith gave Whitman its only win with a 6-1 triumph in the No. 4 match. Haynie at No. 3 and Nick Dupuis at No. 5 lost by 7-6 scores, while Mullin fell 7-5 in the No. 1 match.
Because Puget Sound held an insurmountable 5-1 lead after the singles matches, the two teams decided not to play the doubles matches.
Shetty was one of eight players named to the All-Northwest Conference first team. It marked the fourth time in four seasons at Whitman that Shetty had been so honored.
Ullah was one of eight additional players who earned second-team all-conference honors. Ullah, also a senior, earned first-team honors as a freshman and sophomore. His court time and effectiveness were limited by a knee injury last year during his junior season, and the injury continued to hamper his play this season.
Shetty and Ullah were two of six seniors who played their final matches for Whitman during the tournament. The others were Oliver, Haynie, Mah and Ryan Cooper.
