Pacific 69, Whitman 56

Playing short-handed for the second straight night, the Whitman men failed to hold a halftime lead and lost 69-56 to Pacific University Saturday night in Sherwood Center.

The Missionaries led 25-21 at halftime, in large part due to the efforts for senior Cameron Evans. The 6-foot-5 forward scored Whitman's first nine points and finished the half with 14 points. "I thought Cameron showed some outstanding leadership all through the game," Whitman coach Skip Molitor said.

Despite the early play of Evans, Pacific took a 16-9 lead with just under nine minutes left to play in the first half. But the Missionaries then held the Boxers scoreless for the next five minutes to move in front 21-16.

After Whitman scored the first point of the second half on a free throw, Pacific raced in front with a 21-6 spurt that produced a 42-33 lead midway through the half. The Missionaries, who shot just 33 percent from the floor for the night, drew no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

"I thought our effort was very, very good," Molitor said. "We played hard, and I thought we played pretty well defensively. It's just a shame to waste a good defensive effort by missing every shot imaginable."

The exceptions to Whitman's poor shooting night were Evans, who made nine of 19 shots and scored a season-high 24 points; Greg Durkin, who totaled 10 points by sinking four of nine shots and a pair of free throws; and Kevin Justice, who also made four of nine shots, including a 3-pointer, to finish with 10 points.

Durkin paced Whitman on the backboards with a career-high 15 rebounds, while Evans collected 11 boards. Justice had six rebounds.

Will Washington, Whitman's leading scorer and rebounder in conference games, missed his second game in two nights because of medical school interviews in the eastern U.S.

Evans was the man in the paint against Eastern Oregon, scoring a season-high 27 points by making 11 of 18 shots from the floor, including two of his four 3-point attempts, and three of four free throw tries.
