Whitman Freshman Earn All-NWC Honors in Women's Basketball

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Sunny Gulberg, a Whitman College freshman from Snohomish, Wash., has received all-Northwest Conference (NWC) honorable mention recognition in a season-ending vote of coaches.

Gulberg, a 5-foot-6 guard, averaged 11.92 points per game to lead a relatively young and inexperienced Whitman team in scoring. The Missionaries started two sophomores and three freshmen for much of the season.

Gulberg, who also averaged 4.0 rebounds and 2.68 assists in 25 games, scored 19 or more points five times during the season. While posting a career-high 27 points early in January against George Fox University, she collected four rebounds, four assists and four steals. In a December game against Pacific Lutheran University, she scored 20 points in the first half and finished with 25 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Other season highlights for Gulberg included a 20-point/5-rebound effort against Eastern Oregon University and a 17-point/8-rebound performance against Seattle University.

Gulberg led Whitman in three-point shooting, canning a total of 43 treys during the season. She connected on six 3-pointers in one game.

Gulberg is a June, 1998 graduate of Snohomish (Wash.) High School and the daughter of Larry and Deborah Gulberg of Snohomish, Wash.

While the young Whitman women's team struggled through a 9-16 season, the Missionaries won three games in three days in early January to win the NCAA Division III portion of the Great Goombay Shootout in Nassau, Bahamas.
