Former Yale Player Knows What It Takes to Mix Athletics, Academics

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Christopher "Kit" Stein, the assistant men's soccer coach at Whitman College, knows what it takes to play varsity athletics at a rigorous academic institution.

A 1995 psychology graduate of Yale University, Stein played soccer for the Bulldogs in each of his four undergraduate years. He was in the starting lineup as a junior and senior, after capping his sophomore season by winning Yale's Bulldog Award, which is presented annually to one or two outstanding junior varsity players.

The fall of 1998 marks Stein's second season as a Whitman assistant. "I am looking forward to working with the players again," he said. "I am excited to be assisting (first-year head coach) Mike Washington and expect to learn a great deal from him. We are returning a lot of starters from last year's squad who will be the backbone of this year's team and provide the leadership. There are also a number of promising freshman and sophomores who will help to carry Whitman soccer into the future."

A 1991 graduate of Walla Walla High School, Stein lettered all four years for the Blue Devils in soccer. He also served as team captain and was named the team's MVP. He returned to his high school in the spring of 1998 to serve as the junior varisty boys soccer coach.

Stein also played four years for the Washington East Olympic Development Team. His club team, the Tri-City Dust Devils, captured a state championship.

In addition to assisting with the Whitman men's team, Stein works in the Multicultural Services Office at Walla Walla Community College and plays in the Latin American Soccer League of Walla Walla. He is the son Ted Stein, who recently retired after 17 years as professor of English at Whitman.
