Even though they lost in two sets each, Oliver at No. 3 singles and Curtis Haynie at No. 4 singles forced their second sets into the tie-breaker. Clifford Mah at No. 5 singles won his first set 6-1 before dropping the next two sets.

Match Highlights: Pacific Lutheran ran its win streak against
Northwest Conference opponents
to 51 straight Friday night with a hard-fought 5-2 victory over Whitman at
the Bratton Tennis Center. The victory wasn't nearly as easy as the 5-2 score might indicate, however. The Lutes, ranked No. 21 nationally in the NAIA, forged its triumph over Whitman with a pair of narrow victories in doubles (worth one team point) and four three-set wins in singles.
"The guys competed really hard," Whitman coach Jeff Northam said. "Two months ago they thumped us pretty well at their place. It just shows how much improvement we've made over the season. This was a match we came extremely close to winning."
Early in the season, in the first meeting between the two schools, Pacific Lutheran prevailed 7-0. But Whitman played that match without two of its top players, Haroon Ullah and Bryan Oliver.
In Friday's rematch, Ullah played his first singles match
since injuring his knee on March 6, and he returned with a vengeance.
Ullah blitzed PLU's Clayton Harris 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match,
although his knee gave way once again late in the second set.
"Haroon was up 5-2 at that point in the set, and he was able to finish off the match, bum knee and all," Northam said. "We'll have to see how the knee responds now."
Ullah, who is scheduled for surgery this summer to repair a torn miniscus, was hopeful after the match that he could play doubles when Whitman hosts Seattle University on Saturday. Seattle is ranked No. 24 in the NAIA.
Ullah first tested his knee a week ago, playing in two doubles matches.
The Lutes and Missionaries begn Friday's showdown with the three doubles matches. Akshay Shetty and Oliver posted an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles, but Ullah and Charlie Larson at No. 2 doubles and Clifford Mah and Curtis Haynie in the No. 3 slot dropped close 8-6 decisions.
Shetty gave Whitman its other team point in No. 1 singles with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over PLU's Matt Braund. "I've told Akshay all season that he is the most talented player in the conference," Northam said. "When he raises his intensity level to a high level, he just rolls over people."
PLU pulled into a 3-2 lead in the team scoring with three-set victories in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches. Oliver lost 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 at No. 3, while Mah fell 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.
The singles matches at No. 5 and No. 6 were the final battles of the day, and both bouts went the distance before Whitman dropped two more split decisions. Haynie fell 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5, and Larson succumbed 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 at No. 6.
"Both guys put up a heck of a fight at the end," Northam said. "That's the way the entire team played."

Whitman's Clifford Mah and Curtis Haynie also won both of their matches in the second singles flight.
Shetty and Haroon Ullah won their first doubles match in straight sets. The teams of Mah and Haynie and Bryan Oliver and Charlie Larson won three-set battles in their openers.
Shetty and Ullah are seeded fourth in the doubles competition. They placed second a year ago after winning the conference doubles title two seasons agao. Ullah has been slowed by a knee injury this spring.
Shetty, who was seeded fifth in singles, lost just three games in cruising past his first two opponents in the championship singles flight. Ullah and Oliver, Whitman's other two entrants in the championship flight, lost their openers but then claimed victories in the consolation bracket.
In the second singles flight, Mah and Haynie won both of their matches in straight sets, although Mah needed a tiebreaker to win his second match. Whitman's Eric Bartee dropped his first match but rebounded to win his first contest in the consolation bracket.
Ullah and freshman Eric Bartee also stayed alive Saturday in the consolation brackets of the two singles brackets. Both players advanced to Sunday's championship match in their respective brackets.
As a team, Whitman was in fourth place with 29 points after Saturday's second day of competition. The Missionaries trailed third-place Willamette by one point. Pacific Lutheran was on top with 46 points, four points ahead of second-place Seattle University.
Shetty and Ullah, who are seeded No. 4 in doubles, had little difficulty in their two victories Saturday. After downing their first opponents 6-0, 6-1, they won their quarterfinal match 6-3, 6-1.
The three teams seeded ahead of Shetty and Ullah also advanced into Sunday's semifinal round. Shetty and Ullah placed second in doubles at last year's conference tournament after winning the doubles crown two years ago as freshmen.
Whitman's other surviving doubles team in the winner's bracket, Clifford Mah and Curtis Haynie, lost in three sets in their first match Saturday to drop from the competition. Mah and Haynie had won their first doubles match Friday.
Whitman's third doubles team, Bryan Oliver and Charlie Larson, dropped into Saturday's consolation bracket after losing their opening round match on Friday. Oliver and Larson won their first match Saturday before losing in the quarterfinals.
Shetty, after winning his first two matches Friday in the top singles flight, lost Saturday in the quarterfinals to Pacific Lutheran's Matt Braund by scores of 6-4, 6-3. Braund entered the tourney as the No. 3 seed in singles. Shetty was seeded No. 5.
Ullah, who also was entered in the top singles flight, lost his opener Friday but then won his first match in the consolation bracket to advance to Saturday's play. Ullah won twice Saturday and will play Sunday for the consolation bracket title.
Bartee, who was entered in the lower singles flight, followed the same basic route as Ullah. After losing his opener Friday, he won three straight matches (including two on Saturday) to advance to Sunday's title match.
With Haroon Ullah hobbled by a bad knee, Whitman's top doubles team lost its semifinal round match Sunday on the final day of Northwest Conference Championships in Tacoma, Wash. Ullah and partner Akshay Shetty, who won the conference doubles title two years ago, fell Sunday to Willamette's Pablo Ugarte and Eduardo Kohlberg by scores of 6-4, 6-1. Ugarte and Kohlberg captured this year's title later in the day with a three-set victory over Pacific Lutheran's Matt Braund and Clayton Harris.
Ullah also was slated to play Sunday in the consolation championship match of the top flight singles bracket. Because of his ailing knee, however, Ullah defaulted the match.
The only other Whitman player still alive Sunday was freshman Eric Bartee, who dropped a three-set decision -- 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 -- to Willamette's Jeb Hubbs in the consolation championship match of the lower singles bracket.
The Whitman men finished with 29 team points to place fourth in the 10-school field. Pacific Lutheran, the host school, won the team title with 48 points.
Shetty was one of eight players named to the 1998 all-conference team.
