1996 Season Highlights

Tuesday, September 3
Eastern Oregon State College defeats Whitman
15-1, 15-2, 9-15, 15-2

Passing the ball wasn't a problem in Whitman's season-opening, four-set volleyball loss to Eastern Oregon State College on Tuesday, Sept. 3, in Sherwood Center. Putting the ball away was a different story, however, as Eastern Oregon sailed to a 15-1, 15-2, 9-15, 15-2 non-conference victory.

"The one area that really hurt us was that we weren't able to get a lot of kills," first-year coach Dean Snider said. "We played with them the whole way and had some very long rallies. Our passing and transition were good, for the most part, but we didn't get the kills when we needed them."

After concentrating on passing and transition during last week's initial workouts, his squad will now focus on other parts of the game, Snider said. "We look at this first match as a step in the right direction. Now it's time to take the next step and make improvements in other areas."

Wendy Wilford, who sidelined last season by injuries, paced Whitman's passing game with 19 assists. She also had four kills and no hitting errors. "Wendy did a fine job setting for us," Snider said.

Mandy Rockwell added 19 digs and eight kills for Whitman, while freshman Barby Ream had six kills and just three hitting errors in 19 attempts.

The opposition was led by Ginger Crocker, who struggled through an injury-riddled season a year ago at Whitman before transferring to Eastern Oregon. Crocker had 12 kills, no hitting errors and 23 digs.

Stephanie Meier led a solid Whitman effort with 11 kills, eight blocks, three digs and two service aces. Donna Hager added 10 kills from the outside, along with four service aces and three blocks.

Concordia recovered from a first-game loss to take the next three games and a non-conference victory from Whitman. The Missionaries led 14-3 in the fourth game until Concordia mounted an improbable rally, winning 13 unanswered points to seal the victory.

Whitman coach Dean Snider said Whitman played well until the fourth game slipped away, point by point. "We felt it was a match we could have won."

The match wasn't as one-sided as the score indicates, however. Whitman, which enjoyed an early 3-1 lead in the first game, pulled to within 13-12 in the second game and 12-9 in the third game.

"Whitman played very well," LCSC coach Kip Yoshimura said. "They dug everything we hit at them." Whitman ended the match with 59 digs, only five less than the host team. "We had to overcome a tough challenge from a team that came to play, and played hard."

Mandy Rockwell, who keyed Whitman's effort with 21 digs, 10 kills and one block, was one of six players named to the all-tournament team. "It's good to see her get the recognition," Whitman coach Dean Snider said. "She had an outstanding tournament. She is our go-to player."

Whitman spikes Whitworth
15-12, 15-8, 12-15, 15-9

Stephanie Meier
Whitman picked up its first conference victory of the young season with a four-game victory over visiting Whitworth. "A win is always good," Whitman coach Dean Snider said. "A conference win is even better."

The Missionaries nearly closed out the match in three games, after grabbing an 11-5 lead in the third game before Whitworth rallied to win and push the match to four games. "We should have won that third game, but it was good to see us bounce right back and play well again in the fourth game."

Whitman coach Dean Snider said the momentum shifted to PLU late in game five when Barby Ream had to leave the court with a cut finger. By the time a bandaged Ream returned, PLU was in the process of erasing Whitman's lead.

"We missed too many serves, and over the course of a five-game match, that's probably what made the difference."
