In No. 1 singles, Seattle's Jesse Walter had to work for a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Whitman's Akshay Shetty, who also was slowed late in the match by leg cramps. Walter, ranked No. 33 nationally in singles play, won the second set with an 8-6 tiebreaker.
Whitman's Haroon Ullah dropped two straight sets at No. 3 singles, but the first-set score was 7-6. Bryan Oliver at No. 4 singles, Curtis Haynie at No. 5 and Charlie Larson at No. 6 all lost in three sets. Haynie was unable to finish his third set because of leg cramps.
Whitman picked up its two victories in doubles play. Shetty and Ullah, the
defending Northwest Conference doubles champions, took a 6-1, 6-3
victory from Walter and Jeff Scott, who are ranked No. 13 nationally as a
doubles team.
Haynie and Clifford Mah combined to get Whitman's other team with a three-set victory at No. 3 doubles.
"I think we showed just how how strong we can be in doubles," Snider said.

Charlie Larson gave the Missionaries their other singles victory in
the No. 6 slot, rolling over Tim Schultz 6-1, 6-4.
Whitman's Akshay Shetty lost in straight sets to Dan Araiza in No. 1 singles. Araiza is one of the stronger small college players in the Pacific Northwest. Shetty had a chance for every point, however, and showed he could play at that level.
In No. 2 singles, Geoff Mayes lost 7-5, 6-2 to Geoff Pohl. Mayes led 5-2 in the first set before he ran out of steam due to a strained shoulder. He lost pace on his serve and Pohl capitalized.
Whitman's Haroon Ullah and Bryan Oliver both lost three-set matches to two brothers from Brazil. LCSC's Fabio Almeida defeated Ullah 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). LCSC's Daniel Almeida pulled out the third-set victory over Oliver after losing the first set.
Doubles were played in the pro set format (first team to eight wins the match).
Mayes and Oliver were the only duo to win a match for Whitman in doubles. Oliver got revenge on Daniel Almeida by beating him and his brother 8-4 in No. 2 doubles.
Chris Rozelle and Charlie Larson lost their debut match 8-3 at No. 3
doubles. It was freshman's Rozelle first college match. "We'll take it
as a learning experince and go on from there," said Rozelle.
"We were playing good tennis," Whitman coach Dean Snider said. "A tie- break away from winning No. 3 and a break away from winning No. 4. If we would have pulled those out, the match would have been reversed. We need to learn how to win the tight ones."

Whitman's No. 2 doubles team of Geoff Mayes and Bryan Oliver continued to establish its reputation as a force. Their 8-2 victory put them 3-1 for the year.
In No. 1 singles, Shetty won a tightly contested match over Wrigley in a third-set tie-break. Shetty struggled, never really finding his groove, before pulling out the victory 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3).
Mayes won another tough three-set match in No. 2 singles. He won the first set in a tie-breaker 8-6 and then dropped the next set 6-2. His vicious forehand and strong first serves prevailed in the end, however, and he won the third set 6-3.
In his first college match, Whitman freshman Eric Bartee won in straight
sets at No. 6 singles.
"We played well," Whitman coach Dean Snider said. "It was nice to pull out those three-set matches. It was great to win in such a dominating fashion."

Whitman swept the doubles matches. In No. 1 doubles, Akshay Shetty and Haroon Ullah won 8-5, while at No. 2, Curtis Haynie and Cliff Mah were leading 7-2 when they won by default. The match was cut short because Pacific's time limit expired on the courts it had rented for the match.
Whitman completed its doubles sweep when freshmen Chris Rozelle
and Eric Bartee won 8-5 in the No. 3 match. It was the first time
the duo had played together, in practice or match play. They filled
the No. 3 slot in place of Charlie Larson and the injured Bryan Oliver.
In singles, Shetty, Bartee and Mah all pulled out third-set victories. Larson and Ullah won their individual matches in straight sets.
"It's nice to have a deep team," Whitman coach Dean Snider said. "When Bryan couldn't play it was nice that the freshmen stepped up and won a match. Chris and Eric rose to the challenge."

because of a sore neck. Others on the team compensated by moving up one
notch in singles, and freshman Chris Rozelle filled the gap at No. 6
singles. Rozelle turned in a strong effort but failed to capitalize on a
set point early in the match before falling 7-5, 6-1.
"We played pretty well, but Gonzaga is a step above us," Whitman coach Dean Snider said. "We probably didn't play to our peak because of the early morning start, but they played us tough."
"Rozie (Rozelle) played a great match," Snider added. "He was tough."

"It was a real battle," Whitman coach Dean Snider said. "Basically, it came down to the No. 2 doubles match to decide the outcome, and that was a match we had a real chance to win."
Willamette's Forbes Jonasson and Derek McCarthy, however, outlasted Whitman's Curtis Haynie and Clifford Mah 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4. "Curtis and Clifford played a fine match, but they both had problems in one area of their game," Snider said. "Had it not been for those problems, it was a match I think we would have won."
Willamette's Ugarte, who stormed past Whitman's Haroon Ullah 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match, teamed with Jeb Hobbs to win the No. 1 doubles match as well. "He is a very special player," Snider said. "He has absolute control over his strokes and power to go along with it. He's a fantastic player."
Akshay Shetty, who normally plays No. 1 singles for Whitman, was slowed by bone splits in his left arm and played No. 2 singles instead, where he downed Jonasson 7-5, 6-3. Jonasson played No. 1 singles for Willamette a year ago.
Whitman also picked up three-set singles victories from Charlie Larson at
No. 5 and Mah at No. 6. Larson won 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (11-9), while Mah was a
6-1, 5-7, 6-2 winner.

The Whitman men closed out their Northwest Conference schedule on a strong
note, downing the University of Puget Sound 4-3 in Tacoma, Wash. By
agreement of the coaches, the match was played on a seven-point system,
which awards just one team point to the school that
wins two or all three of the doubles matches. Each singles match counts
for one point. The Missionaries scored all of their points in singles play. Akshay Shetty in No. 1, Haroon Ullah in No. 2 and Curtis Haynie in No. 6 were winners in two sets. Charlie Larson pulled out a three-set victory in No. 5. Cliff Mah had a good match in No. 3 singles, losing 6-3, 7-5.
"It was good victory for us," Whitman coach Dean Snider said. "UPS has lost to Willamette, a team that beat us by a point last week. It shows that a number of schools are playing at about the same level."

Playing their third match in three days wasn't a problem for the Whitman
men, who ended their regular season with an impressive 5-4 victory over
heavily favored Lewis-Clark State College at the Bratton Tennis Center.
Earlier in the season, Whitman dropped a 6-3 decision in Lewiston, Idaho,
to Lewis-Clark State, one of the stronger NAIA Div. I schools in the
area.Because of time constraints, all but one of the individual matches were abbreviated to single-set decisions. Singles matches were played to 10 points, doubles to eight points.
Bryan Oliver, Cliff Mah and Curtis Haynie posted singles victories in the No. 4, 5 and 6 slots. Haynie won his match at No. 6 singles in three sets, although the third set was limited to a tie-breaker.
Haynie and Mah added a win in No. 2 doubles, while Oliver and Geoff Mayes were winners in No. 3 doubles.
Both Akshay Shetty in No. 2 singles and Mayes in No. 3 singles dropped narrow 10-8 decisions.
"It was a great way to end the season against a very strong team," Whitman coach Dean Snider said. The victory left the Missionaries with a winning record on the season at 9-8. Whitman finished the regular season with a 7-2 mark against Northwest Conference opponents.
