Senior Casey Riffe closed out his collegiate baseball season as Whitman's leading hitter for the spring 1997 season. Riffe paced the Missionaries with a .350 batting average, collecting team-high totals in RBI with 19 and doubles with 10.
Junior catcher Wade Lockett also had a solid season at the plate, hitting .325 against Northwest Conference opponents and .289 on the season. He led Whitman in runs scored with 19 and home runs with three. One of his round-trippers was a game-winning blast in the bottom of the ninth inning against Pacific University.
