Whitman Men's Lacrosse Team Claims 1995 Title

Missionaries Celebrate Fifth Championship in Eight Years

The Whitman College men's lacrosse team, which captured four straight Pacific Northwest Lacrosse Association College Division championships ending in 1991, added a fifth title in the spring of 1995.

Whitman rolled through its 1995 schedule, reeling off victories in its first ten games. The Missionaries downed such opponents as the University of Washington (11-3), University of Oregon (14-2) and three-time defending champion Western Washington University (7-5), before losing a hard-fought, season-ending 9-8 decision to Washington State Univeristy.

Whitman also claimed victories over Lewis & Clark 8-6, Willamette 26-0, Pacific Lutheran 13-3, and Linfield 11-2. The University of Puget Sound, Gonzaga University and Oregon State forfeited games to Whitman.

Whitman captured its first conference title in 1985 and then added four consecutive crowns beginning in 1988. In winning its sixth championship in 1995, Whitman outscored its opponents 98-30. At season's end, midfielder Brian Harvey was named to represent the league in the annual North-South all-star game in Maryland.

David Schmitz, associate professor of history at Whitman, has served as Whitman's head coach since 1985. Schmitz played college lacrosse at Roanoke College and then coached at the State University of New York-Stony Brook for two years before coming to Whitman.
