In the No. 1 singles match, freshman Jenny Mayes had a 5-4 lead before losing the first set 7-6 on a 7-5 tie-breaker to Carrie Bellandi, a graduate student at Willamette. Belandi is possibly the best player in the conference, noted Whitman coach Jayne McCarthy. "It says a lot for Jenny to play so well against someone who has so much experience. It's great to see a freshman playing so well so early."
"Seattle University and Willamette, the two teams we played this weekend, are two of the best teams we'll see all season," McCarthy added.

Whitman freshmen Staci Hemmer and Laura Santa lost a close match -- 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 -- at No. 2 doubles, and the Missionaries also lost at No. 3 doubles. With the team score tied at 4-4, two more Whitman freshmen, Jenny Mayes and Cedar Brown, lost 6-4 in the first set of No. 1 doubles, the day's final match. But the Mayes-Brown duo forced the second set into a tie-breaker, winning it 7-5 before sailing through the deciding third set 6-2 to nail down another Missionary victory -- Whitman's eighth triumph in its last nine matches.
Singles winners for Whitman in the Whitworth match were Mayes at No. 1, Hemmer at No. 3, I-Chin Lin at No. 5, and Natsuko Kagawa at No. 6. In her singles match, Mayes dropped the first three games but then swept the next 12 to win 6-3, 6-0. "Jenny is a tough player who doesn't quit," Whitman coach Jayne McCarthy said. "She has unconventional strokes, but she is so mentally strong."
Both Mayes and Kagawa improved their individual season records to 8-4, tops on the team. "I've been pleasantly surprised by how well we've done this season," McCarthy said. "But maybe I shouldn't be. Maybe I should give our players more credit."
"I've been counting on a lot of freshmen all season, and when you're playing against more experienced players, they often have the edge," McCarthy added. "On the other hand, we have freshmen who were state championship-calibre players in high school. They are used to playing at a high level."

Lin captured her first match in three sets, winning the opening set on a tie-breaker. She didn't lose a game in winning her second-round match 6-0, 6-0. "I-Chin had two very good wins for us," Whitman coach Jayne McCarthy said.
Other first-round winners for Whitman in singles were Thuy Ha Nguyen, who rallied from a first-set loss to win in three, and Natsuko Kagawa, who took the first of two sets on a tie-breaker. Nguyen and Kagawa, both juniors, lost in the second round.
Jenny Mayes, one of three Whitman freshmen playing singles, was seeded No. 5 in the 64-player tournament and had a first-round bye. Mayes was upset in the second round, however, by Lewis & Clark's Lauren Blank (7-5, 6-2), a player who then advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to the eventual tournament champion.
Two other Whitman freshmen, Laura Santa and Staci Hemmer, lost first-round singles matches against strong opponents.
"Women's tennis in the conference was very deep, very strong and very experienced this year," McCarthy noted. "Our freshmen aren't seasoned tournament players at the college level. But with another year of experience, they're going to be fine."
In doubles action, Whitman teams cruised through the first round, winning two matches and benefiting from a bye. Mayes teamed with another freshman, Cedar Brown, to win in two sets, while Hemmer and Santa won in three sets. Whitman's third doubles tandem, Lucie McCoy and Babbie McComb got the first-round bye.
Mayes and Brown lost in Friday's second round to the tournament's third-seeded duo. Hemmer-Santa and McCoy-McComb also lost in the second round.
Willamette won the conference title with 47 points, followed by Pacific Lutheran with 41 points. Whitman finished seventh behind a logjam of schools bunched within a few points of each other in the third through sixth slots.
"In some ways it was a rough tournament for our younger players, but we need to keep sight of the whole season," McCarthy said. "We won four of our seven conference matches, and I think that's a better indication of the success we had this season."
