Weekend Highlights: The men's tennis team wrapped up its Northwest Conference regular season on Friday and Saturday, April 12-13, with three victories on the road. Whitman slipped past Willamette 6-3 on Friday and then rolled over George Fox 9-0 and Linfield 8-1 on Saturday. The Missionaries, winners of eight straight matches, finished their conference slate with an 6-1 record, good enough for second place behind 7-0 Pacific Lutheran. Now 9-4 on the season, Whitman is enjoying its best campaign since the 1986-88 glory years, when the nationally-ranked Missionaries captured three straight conference and district titles.

Against Willamette, in its toughest match of the weekend, Whitman got singles victories from freshmen Akshay Shetty, Haroon Ullah, Bryan Oliver and Charlie Larson. Partners Ullah-Shetty at No. 1 doubles and Oliver-Larson at No. 2 doubles pulled out three-set victories, winning in each case after losing first-set tie-breakers.

Whitman breezed past George Fox and Linfield on Saturday, with the only Missionary loss coming on a forfeit. Against George Fox, Shetty at No. 1 singles won a first-set tie-breaker and eventually took his match in three sets.

Friday-Saturday, April 26-27
1996 NCIC Championships

The Whitman College men's tennis team had reason to celebrate as the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges championships concluded Saturday, April 27, at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. Whitman's No. 1 doubles team, Akshay Shetty and Haroon Ullah, won three straight matches to win the Flight One championship and advance to the NAIA national championships. As a team, the Whitman men placed second, outpointing everyone but powerhouse Pacific Lutheran. PLU won the conference team title with 25 points, followed by Whitman in second with 20 points. Whitworth was third and Willamette fourth.

Another highlight for Whitman came in the No. 4 singles flight. Whitman senior Duc Nguyen also won three straight matches to win that flight championship. As flight champions, Shetty, Ullah and Nguyen earned spots on the all-conference team.

Ullah nearly gave Whitman another title in No. 2 singles. After winning his first two matches on Friday, Ullah lost the title match in three sets to Pacific Lutheran's Matt Braund on Saturday.

At No. 1 singles, Shetty rebounded from a tough opening-round loss on Friday to win his final two matches. Whitman's other entries in singles -- Bryan Oliver at No. 3, Charlie Larson at No. 5, and Curtis Haynie at No. 6 -- all won on Saturday to place third in their flights.

Oliver and Larson combined forces at No. 2 doubles and nearly earned Whitman a title in that flight. After winning their first two matches, Oliver-Larson lost their championship showdown by scores of 7-6, 7-5. In No. 3 doubles, Nguyen and Haynie bounced back from an opening-day loss to win twice on Saturday and place fifth.

Pacific Lutheran won five of the six singles flights to easily capture the conference title. As the NCIC champion, PLU will send its entire team to the NAIA national championships. Winners of the No. 1 singles and doubles flights, if not on the conference champion team, also advance to nationals.

Tuesday, May 21
1996 NAIA National Championships

Whitman freshmen Haroon Ullah and Akshay Shetty were knocked from the NAIA national tennis championships on Tuesday, May 21, in a 6-2, 6-4 first-round loss in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They lost to Ouachita Baptist's Christian Wassmer and Tim Oosterhaus, the 15th-seeded pair in the 128-team tournament.

"It was a good, close match," Whitman coach John Witter said. "A lot of the games were close. A couple more points and we could have been in a tiebreaker in the second set."

Still recovering from an apparent case of food poisoning, Ullah played the match at about 85 percent of his normal energy level, Witter said. "Haroon felt much better after we got him rehydrated and some food to stay down," he noted. "He had gained most of his strength back by the time the match was played, although he still felt a little weak."

Ullah had to forfeit his first-round singles match on Monday after becoming ill during the night.

"You can never know, but if Haroon had been healthy there might have been a different outcome," Witter said. At the same time, he added, "Wassmer and Oosterhaus are pretty tough players. They are older, a little more experienced and a little bit better. Wassmer is a Boris Becker look-alike. Just a big ol' moose."

Shetty lost his singles match Monday to another player from Ouachita Baptist, which ended Tuesday's play in fourth place in the tournament team standings.

"This was a great learning experience for our guys," Witter said. "They learned a lot about what they need to do to come back here and have a chance to win."

Monday, May 20
1996 NAIA National Championships

An apparent case of food poisoning knocked Whitman freshman Haroon Ullah from the singles competition on Monday, May 20, at the NAIA national tennis championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The news wasn't much better for Whitman freshman Akshay Shetty, who lost 6-4, 6-2 to sophomore Christopher Johansson, a Swede who plays for Ouachita Baptist in Arkansas.

Medical personnel at the tournament said food poisoning was "more than likely" the cause of Ullah's illness, Whitman coach John Witter said. Ullah began vomiting at about 1 a.m. Monday, and his condition did not stabilize for about nine hours.

Witter said Monday that Ullah hopes to recover in time for his first-round doubles match with Shetty at 2:30 p.m. today (Tuesday). "He's up and around now, and we're trying to get him loaded up on fluids. I think he's doing better. It's just a matter of getting him rehydrated."

Witter said Ullah apparently ate some tainted food at a Sunday evening banquet for the players and coaches. "It's unfortunate that it happened, but it could have happened to anyone," Witter said. "Haroon was just broken up by it. Now he's trying to pull himself together for the doubles competition."

Conditions for Shetty's singles match were very windy, Witter noted. "The guy Akshay was playing was very consistent," Witter said. "He didn't make any mistakes, and he just kept the ball coming back over the net. That's the way you have to play in the wind."
