1995 Season Highlights

Friday, September 22
Whitman 1, George Fox 1 (overtime)

The Whitman women's soccer team traveled to George Fox College and battled the Bruins to a 1-1 tie on Friday, Sept. 22. Assisted by Keri Enright, Amy Burkoth scored Whitman's only goal in the second half. The game ended after a scoreless overtime.

Willamette 2, Whitman 0

After playing nine of its first 10 games on the road, the Whitman women's soccer team returned home to pound Linfield 4-0 on Saturday, Oct. 7, on Ankeny Field. Amy Burkoth booted three goals, while Carole Skeeters tallied the fourth score. Anne Fletcher, Kristen Ott and Stephanie Palmer had assists. Genie Huntemann collected three saves to earn her third shutout of the season.

On Sunday, Oct. 8, the Whitman women lost 2-0 to Willamette, which was ranked 10th nationally in the previous week's NAIA poll.

Friday, October 13
Whitman 3, George Fox 1 (overtime)

Whitman scored a trio of overtime goals to post a 3-1 Northwest Conference victory over George Fox on Friday, Oct. 13, on Ankeny Field. Amy Burkoth notched Whitman's first goal eight minutes into overtime, scoring on a rebound after George Fox's goalie failed to hold a hard shot from Carole Skeeters.

Two minutes later, freshman Melissa Jacob took a long pass from Skeeters, faked two defenders and scored Whitman's second goal -- and the first of her collegiate career. George Fox finally scored in the second half of the 30-minute overtime session, but Whitman answered when Stephanie Palmer scored off Skeeters' third assist of the game. Whitman goalie Genie Huntemann finished with 20 saves.

Whitman 4, Linfield 1

Whitman freshman Anna Stewart scored her first two collegiate goals to help power the women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory at Linfield College on Sunday, Oct. 22. Stephanie Palmer and Joelle Rickard each contributed a goal and an assist to the victory. Sara Sakamoto added two assists.

Whitman had much less success on Saturday, Oct. 21, losing 4-2 at Willamette.

Pacific Lutheran 2, Whitman 1

Hopes for a Northwest Conference playoff berth slipped away as the Whitman women dropped a pair of one-goal heartbreakers on Ankeny Field. Whitman played its best game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 28, only to lose 1-0 to Pacific. "We had some excellent opportunities to score in both halves, but we didn't convert," Whitman coach Scott Shields said.

On Sunday, Amy Burkoth's team-leading 10th goal of the season gave Whitman a 1-0 lead against Pacific Lutheran, but the visitors scored a pair of goals in the last five minutes to escape with a 2-1 victory. Whitman goalkeeper Genie Huntemann had 19 saves in the two games, boosting her season total to 134.
