New Interns

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The America Reads program is designed to increase English literacy among school age children. College students tutor reading in grades K-3 in the public and private school systems. The America Counts program is aimed at increasing mathematical skills among high school, middle and upper elementary school children.

POSITION DESCRIPION

Interns provide one-to-one and/or small group instruction for school age children in the Walla Walla area.  Work is done in public and private schools or at Whitman College. The focus is to increase English language proficiency and the mathematical skills of struggling learners. Interns will report to the America Reads/Counts Coordinator.  Each school will have a site coordinator to assist interns with scheduling.

HOURS6-12 hours per week
RATE OF PAY$8.25 Rate increases with experience
COMMITMENTInterns are strongly encouraged to commit to at least two years to the program.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Interns must be eligible for federal work-study funding as determined by the Whitman College Office of Financial Aid (509) 527-5278.
  • As with all persons working in public education in the state of Washington, interns must receive clearance from the Washington State Patrol.
  • One hour of orientation and two hours of training will be required of all interns prior to assignment. Two hours a semester of ongoing training required.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Submit an application and resume to America Reads/Counts office.
  • The coordinator will confirm Federal Work Study Eligibility with the office of Financial Aid and contact applicant of eligibility, most likely by email.
  • Coordinator will interview student.
  • The Coordinator will assign intern to a school or site as a one to one or small group tutor in either math or reading. Interns meet with a site coordinator at the school who will then match the intern with a teacher who will assign the intern to a child or group of children. Program coordinator will supervise and train interns.
