The America Reads initiative was established in 1997 under the Clinton administration for the purpose of increasing English literacy in primary schools grades K-3. In 1999, America Counts was added to assist middle school students with mathematical skills in preparation for high school and college math. Whitman College started a program immediately and it has grown over the years to now include more than seventy Whitman interns a year. The internship is a paid federal work study internship program. Interns tutor one to one or in small groups 6-12 hours a week, committing to at least two years in the program with many working every semester while on campus. Work is scheduled around the Whitman College calendar and interns’ classes and most jobs are located off campus in schools. Interns serve as good role models as well as assisting teacher by extending learning time.

There is no typical internship because each tutoring assignment is designed to help an individual student and meet the goals of the intern. Interns work with beginning readers all the way to high school math. Students receive far more than just help with reading or math as interns are good role models often demonstrating important study habits. The majority of the interns work in schools assisting classroom teachers by providing additional skilled adult help for struggling learners. Whitman students gain much from the experience and seem to genuinely enjoy what they are doing, with this experience serving them well in future endeavors.

ARAC has changed the educational landscape of Walla Walla by providing skilled help to students who most need help, how they need helped. It is a win/win program for students of all ages. Enjoy!
