![]() Civil War on the Mississippi, Memphis to New Orleans with Professor of History Emeritus Tom Edwards October 9-17, 2010 $2490 per person, double occupancy Single supplement $595 $300 per person deposit to confirm space From Memphis, travel south by motorcoach, visiting battlefields, museums, and cities important to the outcome of the war. Explore Shiloh National Military Park, Vicksburg, Corinth and Natchez, among others, stay in historic lodgings, and finish in the French Quarter of New Orleans. This tour visits the sites of battles fought along the Mississippi River and to the east, in a trip designed to reconstruct the struggle for the river and the key transport routes of the Confederacy. The Mississippi was the major interstate highway of nineteenth century America. It was also the strategic focal point of the Civil War. Whoever held the great river would control the continent. Without it, neither side could supply itself, so both the Confederates and the Federals made the great river a key aspect of overall strategy. The railroads through Tennessee were the other link the eastern Confederacy had to its western bread basket, so both sides fought bitterly for control of Tennessee, the northern gateway to the Confederacy. Professor Edwards has led several previous Whitman Civil War tours, and has spoken at numerous alumni events and reunions. He will provide insight and expert instruction along the way as we visit historic sites, starting in Memphis and working our way down-river with stops at places of vital importance to the outcome of the war, such as Shiloh, Vicksburg, Natchez, and New Orleans. The trip will end in New Orleans, with the option to spend more time there on your own. For more information and to register, contact the Alumni Office at 509.527.5167 or 800.835.9448, ext. 1, or e-mail Margaret Hoglund at hoglund@whitman.edu. |
